Forming a High School Team1. Obtain administration permission from your school.

2. Identify a team mentor, sponsor or teacher from the school to act as the coach and to ignite the interest and enthusiasm of the students. (a key to a sustainable team is to have this coach working at or frequently at the school with the students)

3. Identify a minimum of 5 student members to form a team. If less than 5, climbers may participate as individuals for the school. If more than 10, a second team may be formed.

4. Report confirmation of team numbers by October 1 to Outdoor Chattanooga.

5. Coach and team members set a practice schedule and goals, complete waiver forms, belay training, transportation logistics and climb on!

Climbing Meets/CompsScoring

Points are dictated by the difficulty rating of the route and awarded when completed in “red point” style.

Climbers report their best 5 top rope routes or boulder problems each meet toward their score.

Team scores are a total of top 5 climbers /meet.

Individual scores are kept in Mens and Womens categories.

Page 11: Chattanooga Interscholastic high school climbing league

Climbing Meets/Comps

Red Point is defined as:Starting on the prescribed start holds, climbing within bounds of the route, finishing “in control” (count of 3) on the final hold, never weighting the rope.

Holding an extremely tight belay or falling is considered weighting the rope and is not valid, thus the climber must start over.

If an “off route” hold is touched, but climber does not rest or gain progress, the climber may continue, otherwise it is a start over.

Climbing Meets/Comps

Judging

Climbers must have a minimum of 2 judges, at least one judge from another team, both

to witness and sign for a climber to receive points and credit for a route. Coaches and gym staff may

also witness and sign for any climber.

Page 13: Chattanooga Interscholastic high school climbing league

Belaying and SpottingClimbers will need to belay and

spot each other at the meets.

Belayers and spotters must be qualified by gym staff according to each gym’s policy and procedures before the first meet. Belay forms are required for each gym

and kept on file for each climber in the league.

Coaches can teach the components of belaying and then schedule a belay test with each gym prior to the meet season. Outdoor Chattanooga can provide free belay

training upon request at the Walnut Wall.

SCORING BOULDER PROBLEMS

The problems will be labeled with numbers 1 through 15, with problem #1 being the least challenging (thus, the least point-value: 1 point) and problem #15 being the most challenging. The "V-grade" will not be on this labeling, since indoor problems generally do not correspond well with the V-grade scale and can be considered subjective.
