I created this is interactive lesson to introduce middle - high school students (secondary level) to the Dewey Decimal System. I used the basic principles of the DDS and simplified the concepts so that it is easier to comprehend.

2. Back when your parents wanted to locate a book or other materials in thelibrary, they probably used these kinds of card catalogs. 3. Now, you can access your school librarys catalog from any computer at school, home, or anywhere else with an Internet connection! 4. A Call Number is created differently for fiction and nonfiction literary works. Whats fiction and? Fiction is a literary workNon-Fiction is a literary workbased on imagination.based on facts. 5. Fiction books are classified/given a call number by using the first three letters of the primary authors lastname.Since some books have multiple authors, the publisher decides who is the primary. We add a capital F for fiction, followed by the primary authors first three letters of their last name.For example, for Stephenie Meyers book Twilight, the call number would be: F MEY. Notice that we also capitalize the first three letters of the last namesome libraries may or may not capitalize all three letters. 6. Whats the Dewey? The Dewey Decimal System (DDS) is a system often main categories that libraries use to classify(arrange and organize) books in a librarys collection.Using the DDS, libraries create call numbers for theirmaterials.Those ten categories keep on dividing to morespecific categories, but for now you will only learn the 7. If a call number starts with a zero, itspart of the 000s classification of DDS. The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: computerscience, information, and general works. If a call number starts with a one, its partof the 100s classification of DDS.The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: philosophy and psychology. 8. If a call number starts with a two, its partof the 200s classification of DDS. The books found under this call numberare on the subject(s) of: religion. If a call number starts with a three, its part of the 300s classification of DDS.The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: social sciences. 9. If a call number starts with a four, its part of the 400s classification of DDS. The books found under this call numberare on the subject(s) of: language. If a call number starts with a five, its partof the 500s classification of DDS.The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: science. 10. If a call number starts with a six, its partof the 600s classification of DDS. The books found under this call numberare on the subject(s) of: technology. If a call number starts with a seven, its part of the 700s classification of DDS.The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: arts and recreation. 11. If a call number starts with an eight, its part of the 800s classification of DDS.The books found under this call numberare on the subject(s) of: literature.If a call number starts with a nine, its part of the 900s classification of DDS.The books found under this call number are on the subject(s) of: history and geography. 12. Wait a minuteif the 800s are for literature, wont I find fiction books there?Great Point! While fiction literary works could be classifiedin the 800s, most libraries (like ours) use aseparate system, otherwise we would have anenormous 800s section! As previously mentioned, for fiction books weuse a capital F for fiction, followed by the firstthree letters of the primary authors last name. 13. After the assigned Dewey Decimal number, a books call number will include the first three letters of the primary authors last name.So if you come across a book whose call number is: 576.83 ASI You will know the primary authors last namestarts with the letters Asi and since the call number is in the 500s the books subjectmust be about Science. 14.
