Physical Education Has held a sustained place in the

school curriculum for decades

For this to continue We need to focus on more than just

physical learning outcomes

Multiple Outcomes Physical learning, cognitive learning, social learning and affective learning outcomes

Kirk, 2013

These Four Outcomes will legitimately support the promotion of the

physically active life

Models-Based Approach Caters for these multiple learning

outcomes of physical education

Metzler, 2011

Models-Based Approach Curriculum is organized around models

rather than activities or sports

Purpose: Can the Cooperative Learning model support the achievement of the physical,

cognitive, social and affective learning outcomes of physical education

While there is support No systematic reviews on Cooperative Learning in physical education to support this claim exist

We conducted a Review of Literature

Examining 27 studies on Cooperative Learning in PE

We found evidence of……

and cognitive learning outcomes

Purpose: Can the Cooperative Learning model support the achievement of the physical,

cognitive, social and affective learning outcomes of physical education

ANSWER = YES

HOWEVER

Evidence Based on short-lesson units of study

(i.e. between 6-10 lessons)

We know little about the longer-term learning outcomes

Need Further Evidence On the affective domain: self-esteem,

motivation, confidence

If we understand these areas then we will understand the ‘true’ impact

Cooperative Learning can have

THAT SAID

Conclusion Cooperative Learning should be

considered as an important part of PE
