Integrating Common Core State Standards
into Chinese Instruction
Chinese Program at Dixie Magnet Elementary School
Founded by FLEP grant Started in 2007 with
kindergarten and adding one grade level each year. By this year the whole school has started learning Chinese.
It is a FLES program. Students have Chinese instruction every other day, each day for 30 minutes.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative
is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

Mathematics (K-12)
English Language Art (K-12) & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects (6-12)
Kentucky Common Core for Science & Social Studies Assessments (K-5)
Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core State Standards.
In the States
Kentucky in 2010 was the first state in the nation explicitly tied to the Common Core State Standards.

Effect on Foreign Language classes
Reduce the Chinese instruction time to increase the hours for reading and math Cancel Chinese classes for students in the 3rd-5th grades Eliminate the opportunities for certain students to take Chinese classes Assign Chinese teachers to do reading or math intervention
