Boreal Forest Region

Five communities in our region are : FalherFort MackayFort McMurrayFort VermilionFox Creek.

The Boreal Forest region is located in central Alberta and extends to northern Alberta.

Landforms

Bedrock is found buried deep beneath the soil. The bedrock can be found in caves.

The terrain, or features of the ground surface, varies in the Boreal Forest Region. The region has low, flat lands and meadows. It has hilly areas and moraines.

Bodies of Water

The Athabasca, Smokey and Hay River Systems drain out of the Boreal Forest region. Muskeg, swampy water mixed with partly dead vegetation, is a type of wetland that covers much of the region.

Climate The Boreal Forest Region has longer winters, shorter and cooler summers, and more rain. In some northern areas , the ground is permanently frozen. The permanently frozen ground is called permafrost.

Did you know?The Peace River area is unique. It receives moist, warm air from British Columbia. As a result, it is the most northern place in North America where grain is grown.

Animal

Life Animals found in the Boreal Forest Region are: birds , frogs , squirrels , bison , elk , pelicans , bears, whooping cranes, and other living things.

Natural resources that are found

within the boreal forest are Trees ,

animals , oil sands , forestry industry,

The main industries that support

the boreal forest region are forestry

and petroleum.

Did you know? Forestry provides

thousands of jobs in Alberta.

The Boreal Forest region has mainly coniferous trees with some deciduous trees.

The vegetation in the Boreal Forest region includes tress, large plants, buffalo berries, Labrador tea, blueberry, and willow.

Recreational Activities

In the Boreal Forest region fishing is one of the main recreational activities.

Swimming and canoeing are also recreational activities.

Interesting Facts

The Boreal Forest region is the largest region in Alberta.

In the 1940’s , there were only 22 Whooping cranes left in the world . Now , there are more than 55 breeding pairs.

There are 2 National parks in the Boreal Forest Region.1. Elk Island National park2. Wood Buffalo National park.

There are pelicans in the boreal forest region . This is the only white pelican colony to nest so far north!
