Our theme for this year:Kindness and Respect

Page 4: Back to school classroom procedures

In this classroom: I can or I’ll try

• In this classroom, we always try our best

• I can’t is never an option

• I can or I’ll try is always the option

• We are a team and we encourage each other

• F.A.I.L. – is our First attempt In Learning

• If I already knew everything, I wouldn’t need to go to school.

• “There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.” Author Unknown

• “There are so many people out there who will tell you that you can’t, what you have got to do is say ‘watch me’.” Author Unknown

*Respect for each other

*Respect for your teacher

*Respect for yourself

When I Need Your Attention

I will count backwards from three.

When I get to one, the whole class should be respectfully silent.

Listen carefully as important instructions will follow.

Page 7: Back to school classroom procedures

When you enter the room

• Have a seat

• Get out your supplies, binder, sharpened pencil, and reading book

• Read the screen and get out all supplies listed for today’s lesson

• Open your binder and calendar, and write down today’s learning target

• Talk quietly to students near you until the bell rings

• When the bell rings, get quiet and read silently until the lesson starts (your teacher will be taking attendance)

Preparing to leave ELA for the day

• Place all unfinished work behind your ELA tab in your binder and clean up your work space, picking up anything that might have fallen on the floor

• Turn in finished work in your class folder

• When the bell rings, wait to be dismissed by the teacher

• Throw away any trash in the trash can. Paper goes into the recycling bin

• Stand up and push your chair in

• Exit quietly

Supplies

• Stapler, markers, tape, 3-hold punch are all located on the black rolling stand that has the document camera. This is located at the front of the room beside the teacher’s computer. You may use these as needed, just be sure to leave them where they are so others can locate them.

• Lit (Literature) Books are located on the book case at the back of the room beside the windows.

• Classroom set of reading books are located on the bookcase at the back of the room. You may check these out with your teacher during work time.

• iPad minis are in the cabinet at the back of the room on the side closest to the door. Your teacher has to unlock this first.

• If you need any type of supply, you must let your teacher know at the BEGINNING of class, not during direct instruction. Be prepared!

If you need help

• First, try your best to figure things out. Remember, “FAIL is your first attempt in learning”. You will only be allowed to ask for help AFTER you have read all directions and attempted this on your own first. This is a huge class. Wasting time staring into space or talking while your teacher is helping others is not appropriate, nor will you learn from this.

• If you have attempted to figure things out on your own, you may then raise your hand and wait patiently for help. If it is not an assessment, you may ask someone at your table to help, but ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE ATTEMPTED IT YOURSELF with your best ability. Getting others to do your work does not help you to learn.

Working in a group

• We will be collaborating with each other many times throughout the year. Being in a group means you are to contribute to your group’s learning and discovery.

• Listen to each other with respect

• Participate in the discussion

• Don’t “hog” the floor! Working together means everyone has a say

• We will have a mini lesson over this in which each of you will have an opportunity to help set social norms

Page 12: Back to school classroom procedures

Working Independently

• There are reasons why your teacher will want you to work in a group, and also to work independently. Please respect these by being silent when working independently so others can concentrate.

• Do your very best to read, re-read, and re-read directions and questions by yourself so that you can develop your critical thinking skills.

• If you get stuck, do NOT interrupt others. Raise your hand, and give your teacher time to come and help. Your teacher needs to know what you are having trouble with in order to better teach you in the future. If I don’t know, I can’t help.

Page 13: Back to school classroom procedures

If you need to go somewhere

• First of all, I do not allow bathroom breaks except in cases of extreme emergencies. You have 4 minutes to walk across the hall to your next class. This gives you PLENTY of time to use the facilities. It is disrespectful to interrupt lessons for this as it interrupts learning. Use your time wisely. Chronic problems will need direct instruction from the nurse’s office.

• Fill out your pass completely BEFORE you ask to go somewhere. It needs to be important if you did not go while on passing time. Please do not do this during mini-lesson time. Wait until work time. Again, unless it is an extreme emergency.

• Raise your hand with your pass in your hand, so that I know what you need.

• The library will not be available for a couple of weeks as students are checking out textbooks.

When and where to turn in work

• This will depend on the assignment. If it is due that day in class, hang onto it, and I will collect all papers at the end of the period in one nice, neat stack.

• If everyone is working at their own speed, you will turn your work into the folder. This is located at the corner of my desk. It needs to go into YOUR class period’s folder, or it might not get placed into the grade book correctly.

• NEVER HAND YOUR WORK TO ME! I will lose it, and besides, I won’t take it. When in doubt, ALWAYS place work to be graded into your class folder. This will save both you and I some heartache.

Page 15: Back to school classroom procedures

If you are absent

• It is YOUR responsibility to get any make up work. The best time to ask for it is during work time, or prior to the start of the class.

• Copy learning target from a classmate’s agenda

• Pick up any handouts from your teacher. They will be located on the red bookcase under the windows.

• Absent work is due two days after your return. You will have two days for every one day you are absent. Ex: 2 days absent, 4 days to make up work.

• After that time, a 0 will be placed in PowerSchool until you get it turned in.

Page 16: Back to school classroom procedures

Missing or late work

• 20% will be deducted from your grade for any missing work. You are encouraged to turn in all work, even if it has to be late. 20% off of your grade is so much better than just taking a 0. 0’s are the lowest F you can get and hurts your grade dramatically, but 20% deducted from an A is still a B. Don’t get behind because it is very hard to make up.

• I will take late work until one week prior to the end of the quarter. When the quarter ends, I cannot take any late work as it is already entered into your permanent record.

Respect and Kindness while enjoying learning

• Remember, our theme for the year is respect and kindness. We will be doing many activities and reading many passages that encompass this theme.

• Your learning is what you put into it. Hard work pays off. If it isn’t hard sometimes, you aren’t learning. Expect to get challenged, it’s what makes up grow and learn.

• Have fun! Smile and be polite.
