A day in the life of Professor Walker and her student.

Professor Walker teaches a supply chain management course at a large public university. It’s more than halfway through the semester, and after noticing a drop-off in class attendance, she decides to test her students’ knowledge of the latest unit.

She goes into her course, quickly creates a multiple choice quiz, and assigns it to her students.

Michael Brown (a student in Professor Walker’s class) is on the bus on the way to his part-time job. He receives a notification that a new quiz is available. He hasn’t been to class in a while, because he lives an hour away and doesn’t have reliable transportation to get to campus every day. He’s relieved that he is able to take the quiz on his smartphone before work.

Back in her office the next day, Professor Walker sets up an Intelligent Agent to reach out to students who didn’t do well on the quiz. During the practice run of the intelligent agent, she notices that most students did not do well.

She decides to change her message that will be sent via the intelligent agent to provide an alternative method for students to demonstrate their knowledge, especially for those students like Michael who don’t always make it to class.

She sends a personalized message to each student (using intelligent agents), providing a link to a virtual classroom discussion so her students have the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the material in a different way.

Michael receives the email and is happy to learn that he has the option

to join the session virtually. He immediately clicks on the link to join

virtual classroom, and starts participating in the discussion.

During the session Professor Walker uses a poll to pinpoint the area that the students are struggling with the most. She then shares a file in the session so that the students can keep it as a reference.

Professor Walker’s institution just purchased the premium version of Video Assignments. At the end of the virtual classroom discussion she lets them know that their next assignment will be a group project video assignment.
