Art of effective questioning
“The wise man doesn't give the right answers, he poses the right questions”. - Claude Levi-Strauss
Questions that are used to gather information or to learn more about people or situations or an object related to same or different space and time are called open-ended questions. Questions that are useful for qualifying opportunities, establishing some kind of rapport, trust and credibility are called open-ended questions.
How will I ask open ended questions ?
An effective open ended question will open doors to knowledge and understanding. Ask the question : What do I want to know ? The answer to this will help you prepare and compose the right question / questions.
Examples :-
Tell me about your relationship with your daughter ?
What do you think about the two main political parties in this election ?
What’s keeping you awake these days ?
Open ended questions are designed to get a full and meaningful answer by use of my subjects’ knowledge and feelings. They are less leading and more objective in nature. They are used to have an open conversation about a certain topic.
Open questions begin with What, why, how, with, where, when, define, etc. Open questions keep the other person thinking and continue to give you useful information about them.
