St Patricks Day

People in Ireland and in many places around the world celebrate

St Patricks Day on 17th March.

This is a national holiday in Ireland.

Only Catholics celebrated it.

James Joyce

On 16th June every year, people in Dublin celebrate the life and work of James Joyce.

He is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.

This comes from Joyces most famous novel, Ulysses.

Gaelic Football

This is a field game played with a round ball, smaller than an ordinary football.

There are 15 players in each team and the object of the game is to score by putting the ball over, or under, the bar between the goalposts of the opposing team

Galeic football isnt a professional sport.

Dulse

In Ireland a popular snack food is dulse, a form of dried seaweed.

Dulse has got a high protein content and is a great source of minerals and vitamins.

Some people eat it dried and uncooked as a tasty, salty snack.

Guinness

Guinness is one of the most popular beers in the world.

Arthur Guinness started to brew beer in 1759.

The brewers make Guinness from water, barley, hops and yeast.

They heat the barley and this gives Guinness its dark colour.

The Flag on Ireland

Irelands tricolour flag is green, white and orange.

The green represents the Gaelic tradition of Ireland and its a native people.

The orange represents the followers of the Protestant King William III of Orange.

The white represents the hope for peace between people.

Newgrange

Newgrange is an ancient temple in County Meath, near the east coast of Ireland.

Newgrange is over 5,000 years old.

It is famous because something extraordinary happens there annually, on the shortest day of the year.

Deep inside the monument, there is a 19- metre passage leading to chamber.

The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is a beautiful manuscript containing the four Gospels of the New Testament.

The book has got 680 pages, made from animal skin.

This book shows illustrations of Christian icons and figures of animals, humans and mythical beasts.

Wedding Customs

Some of the traditions surrounding Irish weddings come from Celtic rituals.

In one tradition, the bride and groom hold right hand to right hand and left hand to left hand so their wrists are crossed.

During the ceremony, the bride and groom both light one big candle, called the Unity Candle, showing how two become one.

Irish Dancing

Irish dancing has become well known all over the world through successful show like Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

The Irish have got a long tradition of dancing. In the18th century, dancing masters from Europe arrived in Ireland.

Each dancing master had his own area and travelled from town to town, teaching the dances to the people in that religion.
