Architect/Urban Designer/Theoretician: Jane Jacobs, American-Canadian journalist, author and activist best known for her influence on urban studies.

Relationship between chosen theories and area:-

Since Bandar Puteri is one of the developing areas in Puchong and it is an urban area, focusing on planning such as spatial planning and city planning is important in order for the city to work well.

1. Jane Jacobs says that, “Great cities are not like towns, only larger. They are not like suburbs, only denser. They differ from towns and suburbs in basic ways, and one of them is that cities are, by definition, full of strangers.” The incidents of violence on the city streets have caused the insecurity among the users and because of fear the users use them less which makes the streets still more unsafe. She suggested that a city street equipped to handle strangers, and to make a safety asset, in itself, our of the presence of strangers, as the streets of successful city neighborhoods always do, must have three main qualities:

a. First, there must be a clear demarcation between what is public and private space.

b. Second, there must be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street.

c. And third, the sidewalk must have users on it fairly continuously, both to add to the number of effective eyes on the street and to induce the people in buildings along the street to watch the sidewalks in sufficient numbers.

From Bandar Puteri, Puchong, we can see how the district has been planned according to its public and private area. The public area (commercials-shophouses, malls, hospital, office tower) are located facing/surrounding by main roads while private area (residential) is isolated from the main access. And how the street planning of Bandar Puteri helps to improve the safety of the town.

2. As Jane Jacobs mentioned, “The district, and indeed as many of its internal parts as possible, must serve more than one primary function, preferably more than two.” From her point of view, a district must have different purposes which consist of the common facilities for human needs.

From the site plan of Bandar Puteri, Puchong, we can see that there are many types of buildings which are commercial, residential and services. Each of this

building serves different purposes which is important and is the basic need for the community living in this district.

3. As Jane Jacobs mentioned, " To generate exuberant diversity in a city's streets and districts, one of the conditions is indispensable: The district must mingle buildings that vary in age and condition, including a good proportion of old ones so that they vary in the economic yield they must produce. This mingling must be fairly close-grained." From this quote, her point of view was that the upcoming developments should consider about the aged buildings in order to blend in with the surroundings. In Bandar Puteri, even though there are upcoming development projects, the developer still remains the existing commercials and residential areas such as the Giant supermarket, the Columbia Hospital, Puteri Mart, and so on.
