CARES Mission

CARES provides a comprehensive academic support system as well as

enrichment services to aid in increasing the retention and graduation rates of

underrepresented students. Programs and activities assist students in achieving academic excellence and adjusting to

student life at the University of Kentucky.

Critical First Year Program

• Designed specifically for Latino, Native American and African-American freshmen as well as William C. Parker Scholars

• Aids in successful transition from high school to college

• Provide resources and services necessary for each student to earn a 3.0 GPA at the end of their first year of college

First Year Focus Parent Meetings• Learn about the Critical First

Year Program and the services provided by the CARES office

• Receive tips and strategies on how to assist your student in managing the responsibilities of being a successful college student

• Receive specific information regarding the requirements necessary to maintain the William C. Parker Scholarship

Freshman Group Meetings• Students receive information on available

resources• Staff discusses strategies that facilitate success

in college • Staff reviews detailed information about student

involvement in the Critical First Year Program• There will be specific group meetings held for

William C. Parker Scholars to review the scholarship contract and the rules and guidelines

UK CARES Connect Program• Students targeted for this program are

underrepresented first year students who are not participating in any University of Kentucky scholarship or enrichment program.

• Program begins with an orientation Aug. 22-23, 2014, and continues throughout the year

• Online application can be found on the CARES website

• Program Highlights– Move-In early to residence halls– Connect to faculty and upperclassmen– Academic support and enrichment activities– Chance to win prizes

Freshman Focus Workshops• Seminars are designed to provide

students with information, tips, and strategies to assist with their success at the University of Kentucky

• Workshops include informative and interactive sessions such as:- Professor Communication- Education Abroad- Money Matters- Maximizing Your Summer

Academic Progress Sessions• Students will meet with their

counselor a minimum of two times per semester

• Topics discussed during the meeting include:

- class progress - grades- time management- study skills- adjustment to a new environment - personal issues

Study Groups and Tutoring• Students are assigned to study groups if

enrolled in a math and/or science course

• Study groups meet each week and are led by a peer tutor

• Attendance is expected and required of first year students

• Students can request individual tutoring for any subject in which they are experiencing problems

• All tutorial services are FREE!

Exam Reviews• Before each Math 109 and Chemistry

105/107 common-hour exam, exam review sessions are held

• Final Stretch is offered at the end of each semester for students to receive tutoring in a variety of subjects such as math, accounting, biology and statistics

• Exam review sessions, like all of our tutoring services, are FREE!

Midterm Academic Progress Check

• Qualitative studies have shown that early intervention with students on the part of faculty, advisors, and other campus personnel can improve students’ likelihood to succeed, persist, and graduate.

• Mid-term grades are reviewed and students with grades lower than a C are contacted by a CARES staff member

• Information is discussed with students to help them make informed decisions according to graduation goals

William C. Parker (WCP)Scholars Retention Program

• Each year students have requirements they must meet

• First year scholarship recipients will be required to do the following:

- Enroll in UK 101 - Participate in study groups/monitored study- Attend Academic Progress Sessions with a

freshman counselor

- Participate in First Year Focus Workshops that focus on issues of concern to first year students
