Activity 1:Work in groups of three.Read the conversation, analyze it and identify the 10 errors in it. Correct the mistakes or identify what the errors are about.

Instructions:Listen to the conversation and correct the mistakes.

What are the errors about?

Identifying subjects and verbsAll sentences must contain a subject and a verb (predicate). It is mandatory to have these two components in order to express a complete and a meaningful idea.

Examples:Simone Biles from the USA is the 2016-all-around champion in gymnastics in the Olympic Games.

I have been working at the UAA since 2008.

What is a subject?

The subject of a sentence is that word in charge of expressing WHO or WHAT is doing the action.

Types of subjects

Subjects A person (name of the person) A pronoun (subject pronouns) A gerund (-ing) An infinitive (to + verb) A clause (An incomplete idea) An object

Subjects (a person) Samuel always works extra hours to get more money.

Maria bought a new cell phone last week.

Subjects (a pronoun) They exercise all day long.

We are going to travel to Greece next year.

He needs to study harder.

Subjects (a gerund) Reading isnt a boring activity.

Cooking is a very difficult activity for some people.

Swimming is very relaxing.

Subjects (an infinitive) To teach English is not difficult at all.

To graduate from this major is what I want.

To smile is extremely easy.

Subjects (a clause) What I want is to travel abroad.

What to wear is a challenge for some women.

Where I am going is a mystery.

Subjects (an object) The UAA was founded on June 19, 1973.

Note about subjects:A subject can be either SIMPLE or COMPOUND.

Examples:

My young sister loves going to the university.

My best friend and I are going to have dinner tonight.

What is a verb?

The verb (predicate) of a sentence is that word in charge of expressing an action that will be performed by the subject.

Note about verbs:A verb can be either SIMPLE or COMPOUND.

What is an imperative?An imperative is an instruction or an order you give to a person.

NOTE:Imperatives are always in simple present.

Verbs arent preceded by a subject. The subject is implicit in the meaning of the verb.

A negative imperative is expressed with auxiliary Dont.
