• Term Lists – Authority Files (e.g., LC Name Authority File) – Glossaries (e.g., Glossary of Aquaculture Terms)– Gazetteers – Dictionaries (e.g., Dictionnaire d'agriculture)

• Classification and Categorization – Subject Headings (e.g. Medical Subject Headings MeSH) – Classification Schemes, Taxonomies and Categorization Schemes (e.g.

Dewey– Decimal Classification DDC, scientific taxonomies)

• Relationship Schemes (better: relational schemes) – Thesauri – Semantic Networks (e.g. WordNet, part of UMLS) – Ontologies

Application Profile

Application profiles are defined as schemas which consist of data elements drawn from one or more namespaces, combined together by implementers, and optimized for a particular local application.

Archivos de autoridades

Authority file/list

An authority file is a tool used to establish forms of names (for persons, places, meetings, and organizations), titles, and subjects used on bibliographic records and thus provides uniform access to materials.

Schemas de clasSification

Esquemas de clasificación

ClassificAtionScheme/System

Classification systems/schemes have been used by libraries to arrange materials by subject. Dewey Decimal System, AGRIS Subject Categories are two such examples.

RSS formats• RSS 0.91: (2000) original format, evolved in

RSS 0.92– <channel>, <item>

• RSS 2.0: (2002), evolution of 0.92, simple with additional elements; modular– <comments>, <author>, <ttl>, <guid>

• RSS 1.0: W3C official format, RDF-compliant, extensible, namespace support

• Atom 1.0 (RDF)

Example

Use existing namespaces

Proposals (1/2)• Define a KOS metadata standard – Keep it simple so

that everyone will follow• Define namespaces (only if necessary); preferably reuse• Harmonization of KOS “types”

– its all in the name, for example, “Taxonomy for Plants” is Type “Taxonomy”

– if not, make type definitions clear

• Make KOS available online with permanent URL– Make them available through web services

– Make them available in several formats• e.g. Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS)

Proposals (2/2)• Feed creator (e.g. http://www.fao.org/aims/tools/metamaker.jsp)

• Build RSS feeds

• Build RSS aggregators– filtering for domains: e.g. GFIS

• KOS-Blog (expose via RSS)

• Mobile Feeds

Desirable Services for KOS• Access available KOS

– Visualize– Filter– Search & Retrieve

• Analyze type and structure– Represent in different formats

• Add in registries– Exchange– Share
