Malaysian Calendar 2014

2014 will be a bleak financial year for Malaysians as we face an increase in toll prices, electricity tariff rates, public transportation, possibly further fuel subsidy cuts, impending GST, etc, etc. This calendar was produced to share in our sorrow and help deal with our 2 week memory problem (our leaders say we can only remember bad events for 2 weeks, after that we forgive and love them again). It is a calendar produced by Malaysians, for Malaysians. As such information has been taken from fellow Malaysians, from a variety of sources. As such there is no copyright for the calendar. As it is the work of many Malaysians, it is not for sale but freely distributed. Many of the ideas came from fellow Malaysians who have vented their frustrations on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's Facebook page. All facts quoted in the calendar are accurate and reported in the mainstream news. 2014 must be the year we:

Remember all the failed promises and ask for good governance.

Demand for good leaders who care for the whole population, not just their own relatives.

Move as a nation to see our real issues, rather than the petty ones that are frequently thrown as veil over our eyes.

Work to support the poorer and most affected of our nation. If the government will not serve the people, then the people must serve themselves.

“Sugar is bad for you. Besides poor vision, gangrene and being dependent on a dialysis machine, excessive sugar intake could affect the male libido. I myself have learnt to have tea without sugar. People can change for their own good. If this is a responsible government, we must teach people the right things" Datuk Seri Najib Razak By removing the sugar subsidy, profit before tax for the companies is expected to jump between 20% and 25% with a return of RM1 billion.

Petrol Rise

Cheap petrol is not good for Malaysians. The government’s move to reduce petrol subsidy will improve our economic status. It will reduce a subsidy mentality. Cheap fuel has indirectly led to the continuing deterioration of the public transportation sector in the country. The fuel price increase has already resulted in a corresponding rise in the prices of food and goods, with economists predicting an increase in inflation rates.

School Bus

Fares Go Up

The Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD) said school bus operators can collect a surcharge from parents pending a new fare structure to be announced in April or May. Its group operations warned that SPAD will take action should parents complain about the surcharge. It's inevitable the increased prices of basic goods would affect transportation too, therefore parents should be prepared to face it. The Federation of Malaysian School Bus Operators Association called for an increase in school bus fares by 40 per cent in light of increased operational costs. They said that with the increase of the diesel & RON95 price alone their operations cost went up by 13.5%.

Highway Robbers at Work

“No free lunch, it is either increase toll rates or taxes, says Najib”. “We do not want concessionaires to reap excessively high returns, and the government is examining that, so that the hike will not give the

toll operators unreasonably high profits.” Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar told motorists they could use other roads if they did not wish to pay for tolled highways. The toll concessionaires have already earned back their initial investments in full and do not need to collect any more tolls. Plus spend only 6% of its income on maintaining the highways. This means that for every 1 ringgit they invest they make 16 ringgit back – a 1600% profit.

Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (Plus), Prolintas and Gamuda are 80 percent owned by government-owned entities. Who is benefitting from these toll rises?

Electricity Rates Up

Putrajaya at Night RM8,500 A Day Electricity Bill for Prime Minister's official residence

Green Technology Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili announced the new electricity rates effective January 1. This move was in line with government plans to trim fuel subsidies for power producers in the first quarter of 2014.

Umno Youth wants an assurance from Putrajaya that the rise in electricity tariff is because of higher power generation costs, and not for Tenaga Nasional Bhd's profit, as there were concerns that the hike would only benefit shareholders of the national power distributor. Putrajaya has defended the RM 2.2 million electricity bill by the Prime Minister's official residence last year. "How to avoid such expenses? That is not my residence but the prime minister's residence. If heads of government come, are we supposed to dine in the dark? If the Chinese prime minister comes, are we to dine by candlelight?”

“For DBKL to

increase assessment rates without promising an

equal increase in the level of service quality

is morally wrong.”

KL Assessment Rates Up KL City Hall sent out notices to all property owners in Kuala Lumpur informing them of the proposed hike in rates, which was between 100% and 1,000%. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan, who made public the rise in rates, said “Everybody is confused. That is why we met the MPs. We hope they would then explain to the rakyat the proposed rates are not the exact value.” He revealed even his wife, who owned properties in Kuala Lumpur, was confused over the proposed rates.

We are still confused.

LRT, Monorail, KTM Fares Up The Chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission has announced that LRT, Monorail and KTM fares will increase in 2014. The fare increase is due to the rise in electricity rates. It’s chairman, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said that the increase will not burden the people. “It will be a win-win situation between the affordability to the people and the sustainability of the rail industry”.

Malaysia's Expensive “Limping” Broadband Service

Telecos consumers in Malaysia pay the highest rates for their broadband lines in the entire Asia-Pacific region. 112x what a consumer in Hong Kong would pay and higher than rates in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. In recent years, consumers in 9 countries in the region saw their costs reduced but we in Malaysia saw ours rise. And that for a “half-past 6”service.

Internet search giant, Google, confirmed what most Malaysians have suspected for the longest time - our Internet speed really does suck. Malaysia was listed among the slowest countries in the world for loading Web pages on desktop computers as well as mobile computers, according to a study by Google. Malaysia, with an average Web page loading speed on desktops of 14.3 seconds, was named the world’s fifth slowest, even more plodding than the connection speeds of nations like Colombia, Argentina and Peru. In the category of the 10 slowest countries for mobile web page loading, Malaysia was the best of the worst, with a loading time of 12.7 seconds.

BN manifesto by PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak: “We must never leave anyone behind”

Some of the Legion of Promises Reality

1. A host of consumer-oriented measures to help ease the cost of living.

1. Ha, ha, ha! (good one there), see January to December in calendar

2. Reform the tax structure that is more broad-based and gradually cut personal and corporate tax.

2. See December & GST Christmas gift

3. Lowering broadband charges by at least 20 per cent with guaranteed bandwidth.

3. See August

4. An automotive policy that will gradually reduce car prices by 20 per cent to 30 per cent and make the national cars more competitive.

4. No space in Calendar but a short note: Former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned that abolishing the AP system would be the death of national carmakers Proton and Perodua. 25-30 years still cannot stand on own feet? Car prices in Malaysia are possibly second-highest in the world.

5. Improving the education system so that it is among the best globally.

5. See September

6. Public disclosure of contracts to enhance transparency in government procurement.

According to the UNDP Human Development Report and the 2004 United Nations Human Development (UNHDP) report, Malaysia has the highest income disparity between the rich and poor in Southeast Asia, greater than that of Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia. The UNHDP Report shows that the richest 10% in Malaysia control 38.4% of the economic income as compared to the poorest 10% who control only 1.7%.
