This WebQuest was designed as a project for an Educational Technology Course at Colorado State University. The course familiarizes students in the Teacher Licensure Program with the latest technology and teaching tools for the classroom.

The primary objective of this WebQuest is to familiarize students with the basic food groups, adequate nutrition, and other aspects of healthy living. They will do so by completing a variety of tasks involving the MyPryamid tool and other educational resources on the web. Once they have completed the assignments students should have a good knowledge base on food groups, proportions, and healthy lifestyle practices, while demonstrating their knowledge of building a brochure on Microsoft Publisher.

This lesson was designed for 7th grade Health classes to utilize during their nutrition unit. It will help students understand that being healthy is about more than just diet, and also encompasses the many lifestyle choices an individual must make for themselves. The lesson could also be used in Family and Consumer Sciences courses such as Teen Living or Teen Choices, as nutrition and wellness are incorporated into these topics.

Learners should be provided with basic information about the food groups, proportion sizes, and diet and exercise prior to beginning the WebQuest to guide them in their learning. This is meant to be an assignment to demonstrate understanding of the material as well as teach students to utilize reliable resources on the web for health and nutrition information.

Since the Colorado Department of Education has not outlined Standards for Health courses, this curriculum is based off the National Health Education Standards set forth by the American Cancer Society. These standards include:

1.8.1- Analyze the relationship between healthy behaviors and personal health.

3.8.2- Access valid health information from home, school and community.

6.8.1- Asses personal health practices6.8.3- Apply strategies and skills needed to attain a personal

health goal.

Students will be expected to tie in their knowledge from the different activities to create a final product (a brochure) demonstrating their understanding. This brochure will encourage students to use a variety of resources and critically think about the content they include. Students also have the freedom to use their creativity and work with another person when making the final product.

In order to complete this lesson you will need access to a computer lab where students have computers to work individually. I would also recommend providing a familiar resource such as the class text book, while in the computer lab, for students to reference.

This WebQuest is makes extensive used of the MyPryamid.gov website. MyPryamid is an interactive tool that follows the USDA Food guidelines, in assisting the general public with diet and meal planning. It provides advice and resources for Americans of all ages to utilize for their nutrition.

Begin by telling students they will be working on a fun, interactive, and exploratory WebQuest about Health and Nutrition.

It may help to go through the PowerPoint once in the lab, so students can follow along as you explain their tasks.

Using the Process segment of this presentation, explain the process of assignment and the time restrictions.

Allow 20-25 minutes for research and exploring of the provided websites. Encourage students to take notes on similarities they see and other important information they can use along the way.

Allow students to work on the Blast Off game for up 30 minutes. Tell students to take the game seriously, to work hard to make the correct choices, and to try and complete the game the first time around.

Allow students about 20 minutes to complete their diet worksheet. When they have completed the two assignment remind students to turn them in

and then choose a partner to work with.Allow about an hour, or more if necessary to work with their partner to complete

the brochure-this part of the assignment will take the most time Once the lesson has been explained encourage students to ask questions and

help each other.

This is a valuable lesson for students because learning about health and nutrition is of great importance in our society today. As we all know, there is a huge struggle with obesity, eating disorders, and misinformation about diet and health in our society today. It is never too early to begin teaching our kids about how to live healthy. With the immense amount of information available to kids today, it is also important that we guide them to finding valid information from reliable sources. My hope is that the different activities within this WebQuest will strengthen students understanding while at the same time having fun. I also hope that the research and exploration your students do will raise questions and even promote discussion within the classroom. Good Luck and Thank You for using my WebQuest!
