SUSAN KENDALLPresidentKendall Frozen Fruits, Inc. Beverly Hills

IN 1976, when Kendall FrozenFruits, Inc. was doing less thanone million dollars per year,

Susan Kendall purchased the com-pany from her father, who found-ed it in 1939. Not content to keepthe company at this level, shefought resentment and gender biasin a male dominated industry andhelped the company climb to itscurrent status today with some ofthe nation’s largest food compa-nies as her clients.

Kendall overcame the naysayersby working harder and smarter, bringing new ideas to clients andhelping them question the waythings were done. Under her stew-ardship, the company has beenone of the top fifty women-ownedbusinesses since 1993 and hasbeen instrumental in overcomingmale exclusivity in the field.

She attended Tante Marie’sProfessional Pastry Program in SanFrancisco. Upon graduating, shecatered cakes from her homekitchen while her husband deliv-ered them around town. Still, shewanted to create an artful andhandcrafted dessert, yet one thatpeople could eat on a daily basis, which led her to reinvent and ele-vate the lowly cupcake. With that, the idea for Sprinkles was born.Today, Sprinkles has twelve loca-tions nationwide, a travelingSprinklesmobile - the world’s firstcupcake truck, and sells its cupcakemixes at over 250 Williams-Sonoma stores throughout the U.S.and Canada.

Nelson always knew that if shewere lucky enough to launch asuccessful business, a core compo-nent of Sprinkles’ mission wouldbe to give back to the communi-ties in which it operates. Sprinkleshas donated over $4.5 million incash and cupcakes since opening.Sprinkles also donates daily left-overs to food banks and con-tributes 100% of the proceedsfrom its charitable cupcake to wor-thy causes.

NANCY BERNSTEINProducerDreamWorks AnimationGlendale

NANCY Bernstein most recently produced DreamWorks Animation’sRise of the Guardians in 2012. Prior to her producing role, Bernsteinserved as Head of Production at DreamWorks Animation’s Glendalecampus, overseeing all aspects of physical production in Glendale.

In February of 2011 after experiencing a series of discomforts, Bernstein wasdiagnosed with Stage 3b Colorectal Cancer. In February of 2012, one year to thedate of her original diagnosis, check-up scans revealed seven new tumors show-ing that the cancer had metastasized to Bernstein’s lungs. She was diagnosedwith Stage IV Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, the average life expectancy being twoyears. Faced with this news, Bernstein’s oncologist recommended that she seektreatment at the USC Norris Cancer Hospital under the care of Dr. Heinz-JosefLenz. It was at this point that Bernstein decided that she needed to help raisefunds and awareness for Colorectal Cancer. After evaluating where money andtime for her cause would be utilized most effectively, she determined that shewould help raise money that directly funded the research at USC Norris, led byDr. Lenz for the benefit of Colon and Colorectal Cancer Patients.

With the help and support of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Bernstein has creat-ed “Call To Cure” through the Nancy Bernstein Research Program, at USC NorrisComprehensive Cancer Center. The program is currently raising specific targetedamounts of money for research programs that need funding. The first programthat received funding is to further research the efficacy of the colon cancer drugAvastin. Bernstein raised $200,000 to begin the research and her foundation is nowmoving onto the next phase of fundraising.

The least funded of all Cancer Charities, Colorectal Cancer is known as thesilent killer, as colonoscopy screenings are not covered under insurance until theage of 50, and routinely diagnosed too late. Bernstein has become an importantvoice in the cause and her efforts have brought new attention and ammunitionto the fight against Colorectal Cancer.

women to create new businesses with innovative products and services andthat those opportunities have been growing in appeal as career paths and achance for women to get excited about their jobs and build personal wealthand satisfaction. To this end, Dodi most recently co-founded the Women’sVenture Capital Fund (WVCF) based in Los Angeles and Portland to investin high potential, yet largely overlooked female entrepreneurs.

The Women’s Venture Capital Fund is built upon the simple idea thatwomen-led companies represent great investment opportunities for ventureinvestors. Initially surprised to see the sheer lack of venture capital going toteams with at least one woman in a founding role, Dodi and her businesspartner Edith Dorsen decided they would do something proactive to make achange. Driven by the philosophy that diversity of any kind leads to betterdecision making by incorporating different points of view, the Women’sVenture Capital Fund is focused on gender-diverse teams that have provenmarket traction for their business. The WVCF is specifically interested inearly stage (post angel), capital efficient companies in the digital media andsustainability (health, wellness, eco/green) sectors. Dodi and her team seethese sectors are poised for expansive growth, especially on the West Coast.

Women-led technology companies are still underrepresented in the ranks ofventure-backed companies generally (with 95% of venture capital going to all maleteams), but thanks to pioneers such as Dodi and organizations such as WVCF,those numbers are steadily changing for the better. The WVCF has already invest-ed in two women-led digital media companies thus far, IvyCorp and Proxio.
