Lemongrass is a great herb to have in your kitchen. Used as a flavouring in many Indonesian, Malay and Thai dishes, lemongrass is known for its subtle citrus flavour. Add it to sauces and fish dishes for that extra zing.

Growing lemongrass in your own home couldn’t be easier!

You will need:• 1-3 lemongrass stalks (these can be bought from

most supermarkets)• a glass or small jug• Water• Rich compost • Pot

1. Place 1 to 3 stalks in a glass or small jug of water and leave on a sunny windowsill until the roots have grown out. This should take about a week.

How To Grow Lemongrass At Home

2. Plant the stalks in a pot full of compost, making sure to cover the roots completely. During the summer you can keep lemongrass outside, but make sure to bring it indoors overnight.

3. Water the lemongrass every couple of days and watch your plant grow.

4. To harvest the lemongrass, simply trim the stalks 2 to 3 inches above the soil and then wash thoroughly before adding as a flavouring to dishes.

SapphiresSapphires come from the Corrundum family and all coloured corundum stones are called Sapphires except the red colour which are Rubies. They are mined in Thailand, Burma, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Australia and are the birthstone for September. Dark blue black sapphires were extremely popular in the 70s, although now a finer blue is much more desirable, with Cornflower blue being the most sought after.

Sapphires have many Royal connections, with Princess Anne and Princess Diana receiving them as engagement Rings in the last century and Princess Catherine more recently.Portique has a fine selection of Sapphire Jewellery.

BUSINESS TIPS

Top tips for success!

Effective Thinking Part 3 - LeadershipLeadership is central to determining the success or failure of an organisation.

1. Leadership makes a difference. Leadership at the individual level creates commitment. Committed people are inspired, enthusiastic, dedicated, energised and resolute.

2. Leadership is a three-way process. Leadership can be defined as a process of influence which brings about changes in people’s attitudes and/or behaviour as a consequence of interaction between leaders and followers. For the influence to

succeed, connections must exist between the needs, expectations and values of the followers.

3. Leadership and management are distinct. Management is supported by the authority and power that go with a position in a formal hierarchy. Managers are concerned with formal, logical processes such as planning and controlling.

4. Tomorrow’s leaders will need to be different. The leaders of tomorrow will need to be less assertive, less dominant, less surrounded by the trappings of power. They will be more feminine, less masculine in approach. The will act as stewards of the organisation’s future, showing concern for all stakeholders, seeing leadership as service rather than controlling.

Business News in BriefThe power of the mediaStarbucks handed over £5m to HMRC – its first payment in five years. The chain said it made the move after listening to its customers. “We have now paid £5m and will pay the remaining £5m later this year,” said a spokeswoman. Starbucks reportedly paid £8.6m in corporation tax over 14 years and nothing in the last four years - despite sales of £400m last year. Daily Express

Cost CuttingGeorge Osborne’s Spending Review has drawn the battle lines for the

next general election and given a clear signal that the Tories will fight it on tackling scroungers and cutting waste. Welfare claimants are the biggest losers from the cuts announced last week with the welfare budget being cut by 9.5 per cent in the 2015-16 fiscal year. The Times

Commodity prices dropped across the board – notably gold, which hit a two-and-a-half year low at $1,244/oz. It has fallen 22% since April and is now set for its worst quarterly performance since 1920.

• Adults: use a toothpaste that contains at least 1,450ppm fluoride. Should I use mouthwash?Yes, using a mouthwash that contains fluoride can help prevent tooth decay and help get rid of any last bits of  bacteria or leftover food that you might have  missed with your toothbrush. However,  don’t use mouthwash straight  after brushing your teeth. Choose a separate time, such as after lunch. And don’t eat or drink for 30 minutes after using a fluoride mouthwash.

Teeth CleaningWhat type of toothpaste should I use? Most toothpastes also contain fluoride, which helps to prevent and control cavities. It’s important to use a toothpaste with the right concentration of fluoride. Check the packaging to find out how much fluoride each brand contains. • Children aged up to three: use a smear of toothpaste containing no less than 1,000ppm (parts per million) fluoride. • Children aged three to six: use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride.

“News in Brief”Loan SharksOne million families are taking out payday loans every month and half find they cannot cover the cost of repayments.  The survey for Which? found that nearly 400,000 use the funding to pay for basics such as food and fuel, while 240,000 take the loans out to pay off existing credit.

Independent on Sunday

Are You Depressed?Between 1995 and 2009, the use of antidepressants across Europe increased by almost 20

per cent per year on average, with a corresponding 0.8 per cent annual reduction in the suicide rate. Sweden, Norway and Slovakia have seen the largest growth in antidepressant usage while the lowest growths have been recorded in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, France and Luxembourg. £800 Cash Prizes for Charity in Rotary SwimathonTeams taking part in Wimborne Rotary Club’s 12th annual Swimathon have the added incentive of a chance to win one of eight cash prizes of £100 for their charity. Still one of the simplest opportunities for those looking to raise money, and sponsored by the club’s Business Partners, all sponsorship monies collected by the teams go to their own nominated good causes. This year’s event, again to be held at Canford School Sports Centre, runs from 2pm on Saturday 31 August, a date two months earlier than in previous years. Each team’s members, comprising from two to six swimmers, take part one at a time for a total of 40 minutes, to earn individual certificates for their number of lengths swum. With eight 40-minute sessions planned, each with six teams, the total prize fund is £800. At the end of each session a draw will take place and the winning team will receive a £100 donation for their good cause. The teams thus have a 1 in 6 chance of winning £100.Visit www.wimbornerotaryswimathon.co.uk to enter. The earlier teams do so the more likely they are to be given their preferred starting time. Entry is free.Club President John Slow said, “Our eleven annual Swimathons have raised more than £135,000 for charity. We anticipate that our cash prize fund and the earlier date will help to ensure a bumper entry this year”. For queries or more information contact: DARRYL REACH 01202 840136 / 07969 485279 (mobile)

HOme ImpROVemeNtSThe past month at Elliotts Auctioneers of Wimborne has held some interesting results with silver and gold prices remaining buoyant despite the recent drop in bullion prices. A one off Elkington & Co silver, silver plated and niello casket belonging to Lord Dewhurst Perry the original founder of Ford England sold to a phone bidder for £2300. A collection of medals also belonging to Lord Perry

including his Knighthood KBE and heraldry also sold well to mainly online bidders selling collectively for over £3000. The last sale saw Beatle-mania come to Wimborne with some fierce bidding for a Beatles lamp. Originally made as a throw away merchandising item, the lamp was found by one of our valuers residing in a shed. Despite being

damaged the lamp sold making four times its estimate for £400. Elliotts hold a weekly valuation morning on Mondays until 1pm at the salerooms in Wimborne. Please call the office for an appointment on 01202 848454. Item too large to bring to us? Email an image to [email protected] for an online valuation or arrange for a valuer to come and see you at home.

BOMBAY CAFE COMES TO WIMBORNE

It’s all new at Wimborne’s Red Fort restaurant!

New concept, new look, new menu and new opening hours.

Moe Kochar member of this family run business explains that the original Bombay Café had almost disappeared:“Opened last century by Persian immigrants, their faded elegance welcomed all - rich businessmen, sweaty taxi-wallahs and courting couples. Students had breakfast, families dined, lawyers read briefs and writers found their characters,” Mo explains. “And now residents and visitors will be able to sample the delights of a Bombay Cafe.”

“The dishes will be the way my Mum and Dad cooked,” says Moe, who grew up in Wimborne and attended Corfe Hills School. “However, Indian food is far more than just curry and rice.”

From Chip Butty Bombay and Gunpowder Potatoes to Red Fort Chicken Tikka and North Indian style curries; there is something for everyone at the Red Fort Café which prides itself on using only natural food colourings and local ingredients.

In addition, Red Fort will be selling 30 varieties of teas. Which have many health benefits such as aiding weight loss, IBS and even hangover teas. “Yes they do work, tried and tested by a few regular customers on a Saturday morning”.

To celebrate the new look, Red Fort will be hosting Indian Thali (tapas) nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with ten dishes for £10. A different region of India will be featured each week.

FOOD & DRINK

Meet a tree in DorsetP

It may be easy to take trees in our everyday environment for granted, but it is impossible to imagine life on Earth without them. Trees are of immeasurable value both to us and wildlife, from being home to hundreds of different species, to providing us with practically all basics of life, as well as spiritual refuge and inspiration.

Various wildlife; from the tiniest insects and fungi to birds and mammals, live in and on trees, and also use them for shelter and food. Trees are essential as wildlife corridors, and species such as dormice live the majority of their active lives in the safety of the tree canopy, travelling from one tree to another. Throughout their history, humans have benefited from trees that have provided them with lumber, furniture, warmth, food, shade, paper, and, of course, oxygen! The process of photosynthesis,

carried out by trees and other plants, is one of the very foundations of life.

There are around 60 native species of trees in Britain, which come in numerous varieties of sizes, shapes and colours. Trees fall into two main groups: evergreen or deciduous. Evergreens, for example conifers, maintain their leaves throughout the seasons, whereas deciduous trees such as oak generally lose their leaves once a year.

Trees are an integral part of our landscape in Dorset, which is also a home to some impressive veteran trees, treasured for their cultural, ecological and historical significance. Veteran trees are in the ancient stage of their life and can be identified by a number of features, including bark loss, decay holes and a high level of independent wildlife species living in it. It is important that Veteran trees are protected, as many species of wildlife that live in them could not survive in any other tree.

Dorset has a number of veteran trees, including a yew tree in Lytchett Matravers which is estimated to be 1,500 years old. Most famously perhaps, Dorset has the avenue of Beech trees planted by French

prisoners of war which run from Blandford Forum to Wimborne.

Dorset Wildlife Trust also have some stunning ancient trees at the Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve, and on 22nd August we are inviting adults and children to come and ‘meet a tree’ to find out more about their history and what makes them so special. Please call 01300 321409 to get more information and book your place!

Welcome to our website

Good to be Outdoors a personal small family run business based in Corfe Mullen, Dorset.

Our aim is to run an ethical and honest company that sells good quality, locally sourced products at a reasonable price which are either UK supplied, sustainable, recyclable or have been hand crafted from recycled materials making them environmentally friendly. The products for use in the garden are lovingly made by hand with recycled wood in our very own workshop so are really made just for you!Our philosophy is to only sell product that we strongly believe in at a reasonable price so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as much as we do. We want to make being outdoors a great experience for the whole family!

Horse Bits Dorset LtdAs it’s so hot at the moment we must be very careful that our horses do not dehydrate after working or even just being out in the hot sun. N.A.F. make a product called Electro Salts that you add to their water to replace lost salts, a small pot is only £5.50 and can really help. Also using a lavender wash after exercise to relax their muscles (lavender is very soothing to us and animals). Barrier do one for £8.80. Giving your horse a bath can be very refreshing and some shampoos have a fly repellent added. Make sure you get rid of all the shampoo suds or this can irritate the skin and cause more problems. Keep feet in good condition by using a hoof moisturising product, not hoof oil as that will not let the hoof breathe. Trish 01202 600550

SUPPORT LOCAL - OPEN FOR BUSINESS!The CLES (Centre for Local Economic Strategies) did some research for FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) about the value of a £1 spent locally - the results were compelling, sufficient to convince most people that when they shop locally they are genuinely having a positive impact on their community! They discovered that for every £1 spent locally around 50p - 70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy. For the same £1 spent out of town or online only 5p trickles back to the local community. When people appreciate the impact that their choice of where to spend can have we believe that more people will make more effort to spend more with local independent businesses. July was Independent Retailer Month - The purpose was to give the following benefits • Impact! To benefit the independent retail sector with relevant support, advice and expertise. • Connect! To link consumers and communities with local retailers, reminding them of the benefits of shopping local. • Engage! To spread the word via business organisations, associations and networks to demonstrate the importance of independent retail to the local economies they trade within and the communities they serve.Helping Consumers Find Independent Shops - Visit http://www.independentretailermonth.co.uk/To help consumers find Independent Shops near them independent retailer have created a searchable directory of UK independent retailers. The directory makes it easy for shoppers to find their local independent shops, especially important in the run up to Christmas! For more information on how we can all support our local traders contact: Chris Slocock - [email protected]

This month we have been extremely busy printing your Business Cards and Leaflets.

One of our jobs was to print business cards for Ace Reclamation based in West Parley (see picture right). Peter at Ace Reclamation wanted their business cards to stand out so we suggested that we printed them in Full Colour with a Gloss lamination on one side. He was delighted with his finished cards and now wants us to print his invoice pads, Compliment Slips and Leaflets. He had these kind words to say about us:

“I’m delighted with our business cards. They have come out in such a high quality print and next time I need some done I now know exactly where to come”.

So for any advice on how to make your business cards stand out give us a ring on 01202 882277.

The July Issue of The Wimborne “Little Guide” has hit the streets!

We have had a number of new advertisers in this issue including Auto Paint Repair and Elliotts UK, but to name a few.

We are also looking for upcoming events in August. So if you have an event drop us an email.

We’ve been putting together lots of adverts for our magazines this month.

One advert we have designed is for Red Fort Indian Restaurant based in Wimborne. They have recently rebranded so we were given the task of creating an advert to match their new brand. Take a look below.

Hello Jason,

Since my house went under offer, my agent has informed me of other offers – one of them lower than the one I have accepted! Why?

Mrs HainesHello Mrs Haines,

This is often raised as an example of how unprofessional estate agents can sometimes be. However, the fact is that your agent is legally obliged to pass on all formal offers until contracts are exchanged. Remember, it is only then that the sale becomes legally binding. Up to that point, your buyer can change their offer at any time – and you are equally free to accept another offer altogether. Hence the legal obligation on your agent to continue passing offers on.

Now, this might make sense in the case of higher offers. But why would an agent pass on any that are lower? Isn’t this just a case of taking the legalities a little too literally?

Not necessarily. In certain circumstances, a slightly lower offer may actually be in your best interests. Imagine that you absolutely must move by a set date. You’ve accepted an offer, but your buyer is trapped in a very slow-moving chain and time is running out. A marginally lower offer from, say, a cash buyer who can effectively guarantee completion within your timeframe could well be worth considering.

In todays market when buyers are still cautious and rather spoilt for choice, good offers are not necessarily that easy to come by. This is not to say that you should instruct your agent to continue actively marketing your home. But, it does mean that you shouldn’t be too quick to turn your nose up at any serious offer that happens to come your way

However when all’s said and done and you’ve accepted an offer then, irrespective of any others that might materialise, you can absolve your agent of his legal duty by confirming your wishes in writing.

Good luck with your sale

Jason

In these times of the credit crunch and enviromental issues it makes more sense to repair rather than spending unnecessary money on new appliances. The cost of repair is often a lot less than buying a replacement.
