WHAT DO THE EXPERTS THINK? PART I

I I have been asked many times-- what is your favorite soft lens? Which soft lens disinfection system do you recommend? What rigid gas perme- able lens do you prescribe? It is always a pleasure to give my per- sonal opinions regarding contact lens care. But, I thought the readers of ICLC should hear from the con- tact lens "experts". So, I designed a survey to analyze the economics of contact lens practice, the prefer- ences in contact lenses, and lens care products.

A Diplomate of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the Ameri- can Academy of Optometry is recog- nized internationally as an expert in contact lens care. Diplomate status requires:

1. Admission to Fellowship in the American Academy of Opto- metry.

2. Oral, written, and clinical ex- aminations on contact lens care.

3. Presentation of detailed con- tact lens case reports.

Currently there are 178 diplo- mates of the American Academy of Optometry Cornea and Contact Lens Section. One hundred and forty seven (83%) diplomates were sent a con- tact lens questionnaire. The question- naire was not sent to doctors who have retired from active practice. I received responses from sixty (41%) diplomates. This month I will give the results regarding soft and rigid contact lenses.
