WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 vs. CHICAGO WHITE SOXLH Blake Snell (6-8, 3.65) vs. RH Miguel Gonzalez (4-7, 3.83)

FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY—Sep 28, 2011…The Rays complete two comebacks on this day—one in the game, and one in the Wild Card race…the Rays come back from a 7-0 deficit in the 8th inning and wind up winning on Evan Longoria’s 12th-inning walk-off home run…the improbable victory clinches a postseason berth…this also caps a 9.0-game comeback in the Wild Card standings that began on Sep 4—the largest deficit overcome by a team in September to make the playoffs…the 7-run comeback is the Rays largest ever at Tropicana Field and is tied for the second-largest in team his-tory…the Rays score 6 runs in the 8th inning and in the 9th—with the Rays down to their last strike of the season—Dan Johnson delivers a pinch-hit home run to tie the game…minutes after the Red Sox lose in Baltimore, Longoria hits the walk-off shot, his second homer of the game, to send the Rays to the playoffs for the third time in four years…Longoria joins Bobby Thomson—with his “Shot Heard ’Round the World” for the New York Giants in 1951—as the only players in major league history to hit a walk-off home run in the last game of the regular season to send their team to the playoffs.

HELPING HAND—Prior to tonight’s game, Rays OF Mikie Mahtook will take part in a pregame ceremony with White Sox RH Anthony Ranaudo to promote the LSU alumni effort “Pitch In With Former Tigers” to support the Baton Rouge Area Foundation…earlier this month, the Rays donated $2,500 to match Mahtook’s donation to the cause…to donate or for more info, visit braf.org/pitchin.

RAY MATTER—Last night the Rays extended their losing streak to 5 games, their longest skid since July 5-16 (8)…last night’s 13-6 setback matched their season high for runs allowed (July 5 vs. LAA, 13-5)…the Rays surrendered multiple runs in 5 of their 8th innings (1st-3, 2nd-2, 3rd-3, 5th-2, 8th-3), their most since April 15, 2015 at TOR in a 12-7 loss…the Rays have gone 31 innings without holding a lead, since holding a 3-2 edge through 6 innings on Sat vs. BOS…Rays have also lost 8 of their last 9, batting 13-for-68 (.191) with RISP in that span…this has dropped them to a season-worst 27 games under .500, their worst mark since finishing the 2007 season at 66-96…at 65-92, they own the 2nd-worst record in the AL ahead of Minnesota (56-101)…after this 4-game series, the Rays continue on to Texas where they finish the season with a 3-game set.

Q THE FIRST—Last night in the 9th inning, INF Juniel Querecuto hit a 2-run triple for his first major league hit, becoming the first in Rays history to triple for his first major league hit…according to Stats LLC, the last player to do this in the AL was CWS Tyler Saladino on July 11, 2015 at Wrigley Field.

TATER TRACKER—No team in major league history can match the Rays combination of home runs (214) and losses (92)…their club-record 214 HR are the 5th most in ma-jor league history by a team that lost 90-plus games (see chart)…the Rays are tied for 4th in the majors in HR (see chart), but 24th in runs scored (656).

Ê The Rays have also allowed 204 HR, one of 22 teams in major league his-tory to both hit and allow 200 HR…the Mariners have also done it this season, and the Rangers are close with 199 HR allowed.

EXTRA! EXTRA!—The Rays have 519 extra-base hits this season, 2nd most in club history behind 2009 (532)…since the All-Star break, the Rays lead the majors with 236 extra-base hits and have three of the AL’s top seven players in XBH…3B Evan Longoria and INF Brad Miller are tied for 2nd in the AL (along with TEX Adrian Beltre) with 34 XBH since the break, while OF Corey Dickerson is tied for 5th with 33 XBH.

Ê Dickerson’s 22 doubles since the All-Star break are tied with CWS Melky Cabrera for 2nd in the AL behind CLE Jose Ramirez (24) and are a club record after the break, passing Ben Zobrist (21 in 2012) and Julio Lugo (21 in 2005).

Ê Brad Miller needs one more double to join Evan Longoria as the first set of Rays teammates with 30 HR and 30 2B each…three other tandems have done it this season: Boston’s Mookie Betts and Da-vid Ortiz, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo for the Cubs, and To-ronto’s Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion.

ELIAS SAYS—On Sat vs. BOS, 2B Logan Forsythe became the fourth Ray with 20 HR this season, most in club history, joining Evan Longoria (36), Brad Miller (30) and Corey Dickerson (23)…the Elias Sports Bureau notes that last night, four players around baseball hit their 20th homer—STL Matt Carpenter, NYY Didi Gregorius, NYY Gary Sanchez and ARI Jean Segura—setting a new MLB record of 107 players with at least 20 HR this season…the prev. record was 103 in 1999.

EVAN ALMIGHTY—3B Evan Longoria, who yesterday lost a single via official scoring change from the Sep 20 vs. NYY game, now needs one hit to tie his career high of 169 (2010)…he is currently tied with his 2009 career high of 77 extra-base hits…he is 5 RBI away from his third 100-RBI season (113 in 2009, 104 in 2010)…his 36 HR and 321 total bases are already career highs, and the home runs are a club record for a RH hitter…only one Ray has ever hit more: Carlos Peña (46 in 2007 and 39 in 2009)…all 36 HR have come as a third baseman, 3rd in the majors to COL Nolan Arenado (40) and CWS Todd Frazier (38).

RAYS vs. WHITE SOX—The Rays trail the season series, 3-2…they’ve been outscored 20-7 in the first 2 games of this series…last night’s 13-6 loss was the most runs the Rays have ever allowed at U.S. Cellular Field, and matched April 11, 2000 at Tropicana Field (also 13-6) for their most ever allowed to the White Sox…Rays won 2 of 3 games when they met at Tropicana Field, April 15-17, holding the Pale Hose to 5 runs total…the Rays went 5-1 in the 2015 season series, their best ever vs. Chicago…they won 2 of 3 games last time they visited here, Aug 3-5, 2015, scoring 21 runs with 8 doubles and 6 HR…the Rays are 63-78 (.447) all-time but only 27-41 (.397) at U.S. Cellular Field…they are 33-32 since becoming the Rays in 2008.

SOMETHING TO SHOOT FOR—Tonight’s starter, LH Blake Snell, makes his 19th and final start of the season…he needs 6 SO to become the fourth rookie lefty in Rays history to reach 100 SO, joining Matt Moore (175 in 2012), Scott Kazmir (174 in 2005) and David Price (102 in 2009).

Ê In an article posted on ESPN.com this week using MLB StatCast data, Snell was shown to have the 2nd-best spin rate on his four-seam fastball among major league LHPs (min. 500 thrown) at 2507 RPM…only CHC Aroldis Chapman is higher (2546 RPM).

ARCH TOMORROW—Tomorrow RH Chris Archer makes his final start of the season…at 8-19 with a 4.02 ERA, it’s worth noting the only pitcher to lose 20 games in Archer’s lifetime was DET Mike Maroth (9-21) in 2003—and the last pitcher to lose 20 with a sub-4.00 ERA was OAK Brian King-man (8-20, 3.83) in 1980.

Ê Only five other pitchers in AL history have reached his combination of strikeouts (228) and losses (19), and four of them are Hall of Famers: *Gaylord Perry, CLE 1973 19 L 238 SOMickey Lolich, DET 1970 19 L 230 SO*Walter Johnson, WAS-AL 1916 20 L 228 SO*Ed Walsh, CWS 1910 20 L 258 SO*Rube Waddell, PHI-AL 1904 19 L 349 SO * Hall of Famer

PLENTY OF PUNCH—Rays hitters lead the AL with 1,441 strikeouts, 3rd in the majors behind the Brewers (1,503) and Padres (1,454)…it’s also the 8th-highest total in major league history, but every team above them has occurred since 2010…on Monday, Major League Baseball broke its single-season strikeout record for a ninth consecutive season.

OUTLAW ON THE MEND—CF Kev-in Kiermaier has missed the last 2 games due to a bruised left wrist sus-tained on a HBP by BOS Eduardo Rodriguez on Sunday…Kiermaier ranks 2nd among all major league fielders with 24 Defensive Runs Saved (see chart), despite missing 48 games with a broken hand…last year he recorded 42 DRS, the highest mark since 2003, when Baseball Info Solutions began tracking it, and won the Gold and Platinum Glove Awards.

Ê Kiermaier is batting .314/.390/.495 (33-for-105) over his last 27 G since Aug 27, raising his avg. from .219 to .247 and his OBP from .307 to .332 over that span…since moving to the No. 2 spot in the batting order on Aug 2, is batting .283/.353/.446 (52-for-184) with 7 2B, 7 HR, 18 RBI and 11 SB in 48 games.

TONIGHT’S STARTER—LH BLAKE SNELL (6-8, 3.65)

#16 KEVIN CASH, MANAGER Ê Has more wins (145) than any of the 4 prev. managers in their first two

seasons at the post (Lou Piniella, 133)…38-year-old is the youngest active manager in the majors, 5 months younger than SD Andy Green.

Ê Has been ejected 4 times as manager, once this year (April 29 vs. TOR). Ê Is the fifth manager in Rays history…is the sixth Tampa-born manager

in ML history and second to manage the Rays…joins Hall of Famers Al

Lopez and Tony La Russa, Lou Piniella, Dave Miley and John Hart. Ê Played 12 professional seasons as a catcher, including parts of eight sea-

sons in the majors (2002-10)…spent two years (2005-06) in the Rays org. Ê Played in the 1989 Little League World Series (Tampa Northside LL),

1999 College World Series (Florida State) and earned World Series rings in 2007 (Red Sox) and 2009 (Yankees).

TOMORROW’S STARTER—RH CHRIS ARCHER (8-19, 4.02) Ê LAST START—On Fri vs. BOS, both runs allowed came on David

Ortiz’s 2-run homer in the 1st…was his fourth career homer allowed to Ortiz, breaking a tie with Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion for his most against a single player…was his 11th straight losing decision against the Red Sox, longest by a pitcher against any opponent since CWS/TOR Mark Buehrle vs. the Yankees (12, 2004-14)…his line: L, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 SO, 1 HR, 105 pit, 66 str.

Ê ON THE LINE—Starts tomorrow looking to avoid his 20th loss of the season…there have been 201 instances of 20 losses in major league history, but only one in Archer’s lifetime: DET Mike Maroth in 2003 (21)…the breakdown by decade: 1900-09: 74; 1910-19: 33; 1920-29: 22; 1930-39: 20; 1940-49: 12; 1950-59: 11; 1960-69: 16; 1970-79: 14; 1980-89: 1, 1990-99: 0; 2000-09: 1; 2010–Current: 0…no pitcher in ei-ther league has lost 20 games the season after being an All-Star since ATL Phil Niekro in 1979 (20)…and for the record, OAK Brian Kingman in 1980 was the last pitcher to finish with 20 losses and a sub-4.00 ERA.

Ê LOSSES—His 19 losses are a club record, passing Tanyon Sturtze in 2002 (18) and are the most in the majors, ahead of SD/CWS James Shields (18)…is the first 19-game loser since KC Darrell May in 2004 (9-19)…only five other AL pitchers have ever matched his combination of losses and strikeouts (228), and the last to do so was Hall of Famer CLE Gaylord Perry in 1973 (19-L, 238-SO).

Ê BETTER SINCE THE BREAK—Is 4-7 with a 3.19 ERA (84.2-IP, 30-ER) in 13 starts since the All-Star break…this stretch has lowered his season ERA from 4.66 to 4.02—his lowest since his 3.60 ERA after his Opening Day start vs. TOR…it’s stayed the same or gone down in 7 straight starts…last season the only pitcher with as high a first-half ERA (4.66) to finish with a sub-4.00 ERA was TOR R.A. Dickey.

Ê vs. CHICAGO—Is 2-0 with a 4.13 ERA (28.1-IP, 13-ER) in 5 career apps (4 starts) against the White Sox…is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA (15-IP, 10-ER) in 3 career apps (2 starts) at U.S. Cellular Field…hasn’t pitched against them since Aug 4, 2015, a win over Chris Sale.

Ê LAST START—On Thu vs. NYY, had the second scoreless start of his career (also July 19 at COL, 6 IP)…went 5 IP, just the second time in his last 6 starts he’s done so…improved to 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA (50.1-IP, 17-ER) at home, compared to 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA on the road…joined Jake Odorizzi (2014), Chris Archer (2013) and Wade Davis (2010) as the only rookies in club history to beat the Yankees twice in a season…his line: W, 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 SO, 88 pit, 54 str.

Ê PITCH COUNT—Averaging 19.4 pitches per inning, most in the ma-jors (min. 75 IP), ahead of KC Chris Young (18.9)…is in line for the highest mark in club history, ahead of Seth McClung (18.9 in 2006)…his 1.64 WHIP is 4th-highest in the AL and would be the highest by a Ray since Andy Sonnanstine had a 1.66 WHIP in 2009 (min. 75 IP).

Ê SEEKING LENGTH—Has gone less than 5 IP in 4 of his last 6 starts, going 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA (24.2-IP, 14-ER)…has failed to do so in 5 of his last 8 starts (since Aug 10), and is 3-4 with a 4.88 ERA (31.1-IP, 17-ER) since then—raising his season ERA from 2.95 to 3.65…he is averaging just under 5 IP per start this season (86.1-IP, 18-GS).

Ê Has made 5 starts of less than 4 IP, most by a Ray since Jeff Niemann in 2009 (5) and one shy of the major league lead held by SD/CWS James Shields (6) and MIN Tyler Duffey (6).

Ê HELP WANTED—Has received 4 runs (or more) of run support only 5 times in his 18 starts this season…has had 7 starts with no run sup-port, including 3 of his last 6 starts…has received a total of 3 runs of support in his 8 losses, 38 runs in his 6 wins and 10 runs in his 4 ND.

Ê SPLITS—Fourteen of his 44 runs allowed have come in the 1st in-ning…five of those 14 runs have been unearned—has a 4.50 ERA (18-IP, 9-ER) in the 1st and a 3.42 ERA (68.1-IP, 26-ER) after that.

Ê 20 of his 44 runs allowed have come with 2 outs (45.4 pct.). Ê Batters leading off an inning have hit .313/.387/.422 (26-for-83)

against him, with 3 2B, 2 HR and 10 BB.

Ê UNCLE CHARLIE—Opponents are batting .044 (2-for-45) with 1 1B, 1 2B and 26 SO in at-bats ending with his curveball…see chart—ac-

cording to PITCHf/x, his opp avg. is the 2nd-lowest by a pitcher with any pitch (min. 30 at-bats ending with the pitch).

Lowest Opp Avg. vs. Any Pitch (min. 30 AB) Pitch Opp Avg. H-ABCLE Dan Otero Changeup .032 1-for-31TB Blake Snell Curveball .044 2-for-45MIA Dustin McGowan Slider .062 5-for-81CWS/STL Zach Duke Curveball .069 4-for-58TEX Jake Diekman Slider .070 3-for-43

Ê NO HOMERS CLUB—Has allowed 5 HR in 86.1 IP for a 0.52 HR/9 IP ratio, 1st among rookies and 3rd in the ma-jors (min. 10 starts)…the club record for a rookie is 0.58, by Scott Kazmir in 2005…all have been hit by righties, and three of his 5 HR have come with runners on base.

Ê WORKLOAD—Has established a career-high with 149.1 IP between the Rays and Triple-A Durham…his previous high was 134.0 IP last season over three minor league stops.

Ê BREAKS & BRUISES—Hasn’t hit a batter in any of his 18 starts, passing Wade Davis in 2009-10 (16 starts) for the longest streak to start their major league career without one in franchise history.

Ê STRIKEOUTS—Min. 10 starts, his 9.80 SO/9 IP ratio (86.1-IP, 94-SO) leads AL rookies, ranks 2nd among ML rookies to COL Jon Gray (10.07), and would be the highest mark in franchise history for a rookie.
