WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 2017 vs. KANSAS CITY ROYALSRH Chris Archer (2-1, 3.57) vs. RH Jason Hammel (1-3, 5.53)

REHAB CORNER—SS Matt Duffy played 4 innings at shortstop for Class-A Charlotte last night at Clearwater (Phillies), and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single…he is scheduled to be off today.

RAYS UP FOR OUR COMMUNITY—This morning INF Daniel Robertson, C Wilson Ramos and mascot Raymond visited patients at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Pete, courtesy of Sagicor.

RAY MATTER—The Rays have a 3-game losing streak, tying their season high (third time, last April 15-17) and their longest skid at home since Sep 23-25, 2016…with last night’s 7-6, 12-inning loss, the Rays dropped to a season-most 3 games under .500…the Rays staked a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning last night and now have 14 come-from-behind losses, most in the majors…they are 10-13 in their last 23 games despite holding a lead in 22 of those 23 contests…the 4-0 advantage matched their largest blown lead of the season—on April 23 vs. HOU, they also led 4-0 after the 1st inning and lost 6-4 in 10 innings…the Rays had 6 straight batters reach base in the 1st inning and lead the AL with 30 runs scored in the opening frame.

Ê In innings 1-through-5, the Rays are outscoring opponents 99-65…after that, they’ve been oustcored 83-50.

Ê The Rays have lost 2 of their last 3 when scoring 6-plus runs (also May 3 vs. MIA, 10-6) after beginning the year 8-0 in those games.

Ê Last night was the Rays longest game of the season by both innings (12) and time (4:24)…their last time playing 12-plus was July 22, 2016 at OAK (lost 1-0 in 13)…it was their longest game time since June 15, 2016 vs. SEA (4:38; won 3-2 in 13).

LATE-NIGHT HEARTBREAK—Last night RH Diego Moreno yielded a go-ahead homer to 3B Mike Moustakas in the 12th inning…the last time the Rays yielded a go-ahead homer in the 12th or later was July 3, 2015 at NYY, when RH Steve Geltz gave up a 12th-inning walk-off shot to Brian McCann, turning a 5-4 lead into a 7-5 loss…it was only the sixth time an opponent hit a go-ahead blast in the 12th or later at Tropicana Field, first since TOR Chris Colabello (12th) on June 24, 2015 off Brandon Gomes…one other Royal has done it: Mike Sweeney on Aug 17, 2002 (12th) off RH Jesús Colome.

A RARITY—All nine Rays in the starting lineup last night recorded a hit, the first time the Rays did that in a loss since Sep 2, 2008 vs. NYY (lost 7-2).

ELIAS SAYS—The Elias Sports Bureau notes that the Rays were one of six teams to score 4 or more 1st-inning runs on Tuesday night, along with the Astros (5), Brewers (5), Rangers (5), Phillies (4) and Mets (4)…it’s only the third time in major league history that six different teams all scored at least 4 runs in the opening frame and the other two times it happened were both in 1890…the dates in 1890 were April 22 and Sep 1.

WALKS AND Ks—The Rays offense leads the majors with 147 BB and 360 SO, and both figures are their most in club history through 35 games (140 BB in 2010, 332 SO in 2016)…the Rays have 80 BB in 15 games since the start of the last road trip, an average of 5.3 per game…2B Brad Miller is tied with WAS Bryce Harper for the major league lead with 28 BB…last season, he didn’t reach 28 BB until Aug 7 vs. MIN, the team’s 110th game…Rays have 46 SO more than any other team (Arizona, 314)…last year Rays hitters had a club-record 1,482 SO, 2nd most in AL history.

Ê Twice in the last two weeks (including currently), Rays hitters have compiled streaks of 5 consecutive double-digit-strikeout games, matching the club record…prior to this, they had done it only once in club history (Sep 12-16, 2015)…they have 23 double-digit strike-out games this year, most in the majors, putting them on a pace for 106…the major league record is 80 by the 2013 Astros.

RAYS vs. ROYALS—The Rays have lost 14 of the last 17 meetings includ-ing the first 2 games of this year’s season series…after this 4-game set, the Rays visit Kauffman Stadium for 3 games (Aug 28-30) where they have lost 8 in a row…since 2012, the Rays are 8-27 (.229) against the Royals, the worst record of any same-league matchup over that span…the Rays are 73-75 all-time: 46-34 (.575) at home, and 27-41 (.397) in KC…Rays have lost five consecutive season series from 2012-16 and went 2-5 in 2016.

JOHNNY WHOLESTAFF—Rays Manager Kevin Cash, who was ejected by 3B umpire Bill Welke in the 3rd inning following the balk call against RH Matt Andriese, and bench coach Tom Foley used eight pitchers last night, matching the most used during Cash’s tenure…they also used eight

pitchers on Sep 27, 2015 at TOR (5-4 loss) and April 10, 2015 at MIA (10-9 loss in 10 inn.)—Cash’s fourth game on the job.

Ê Last night was Cash’s sixth career ejection as a manager, second this season (April 19 vs. DET).

PITCHING PROPERLY—Rays pitchers carry a 3.67 ERA, 5th best in the majors…starting pitchers hold a 3.36 ERA, percentage points behind the Rangers and Dodgers for 3rd in the majors (see chart) and rank 5th in the majors with a .237 opp avg. …Rays starters have worked into the 6th inning in 6 consecu-tive starts…they’ve lasted 7 IP or longer in 5 of their last 11 games, following a stretch of 16 games without doing that.

MR. DURABLE—Tonight’s starter, RH Chris Archer, leads the majors with 129 starts since June 1, 2013, the day he was recalled for good…following him on that list is DET/WAS Max Scherzer (128) and former teammate James Shields (126)…Shields entered this season as the major league leader over that span, but is currently on the DL with a strained right lat.

LOMO RISIN’—1B Logan Morrison leads the team with 8 HR and 20 RBI…a year ago on this date, he was batting .122 (9-for-74) with 0 RBI in 23 games…his 8 HR and 19 RBI as a first baseman rank 2nd in the AL to OAK Yonder Alonso (11-HR, 27-RBI)…this is the earliest in his career he’s reached 8 HR, ahead of 2011 when he did it on June 10 en route to a career-high 23 HR.

COREY DICKERSON—Last night recorded his 14th multi-hit game, 2nd in the AL behind NYY Starlin Castro (15) and most by a Ray within the team’s first 35 games since Evan Longoria (14) in 2010…only two Rays have exceeded that mark in the team’s first 35 games: rookie OF Rocco Baldelli (18) in 2003 and OF Quinton McCracken (16) in 1998…Dickerson also ranks among AL leaders in batting avg. (.323, 7th), hits (40, 4th), doubles (10, T-4th), XBH (16, T-5th) and total bases (68, T-5th).

Ê Since the 2016 All-Star break, leads the AL with 32 2B, ahead of CLE José Ramírez (31)…is tied for 2nd in the AL with 50 XBH, with OAK Khris Davis and TB Evan Longoria, behind MIN Brian Dozier (58).

EVAN LONGORIA—Has drawn 539 BB in his career, 2nd in club history behind Ben Zobrist (542)…he is already the Rays all-time leader in HR, RBI, doubles, XBH, games and total bases…he’s also 2nd in runs scored (725) behind Carl Crawford (765) and 2nd in hits (1,341) behind Crawford (1,480)…since the start of the 2013 season, Longoria’s 675 games played lead the majors, followed by SEA Kyle Seager (668), NYY/SEA Robinson Canó (667), LAA Mike Trout (662) and KC Alcides Escobar (662).

JESÚS SUCRE—Last night recorded his major-league-leading third catch-er pickoff, already tying the club record set by Toby Hall in 2005…the only other catchers in baseball with multiple pickoffs are SF Buster Posey, MIA J.T. Realmuto, CHC Willson Contreras and MIL Manny Pina.

SCHEDULING QUIRKS—Forty-two of the Rays first 46 games (through May 21) are against teams that finished the 2016 season with a .500 record or better…the only exceptions were their 4 games last week vs. the Mar-lins…the Rays have only one off-day in the month of May (May 18)…this is the 13th game in a stretch of 20 games in 20 days (5-7 thus far), and the 28th in a stretch of 35 games in 36 days (11-16)…the Rays are 9-14 against AL East opponents, and 7-5 against teams outside the division.

STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS—The Rays have won twice in walk-off fash-ion this season, April 19 vs. DET (José Iglesias error) and April 8 vs. TOR (Brad Miller walk-off walk)…despite this, they haven’t hit a walk-off home run since May 22, 2014 vs. OAK (Sean Rodriguez), the longest drought in the majors…in the time since then, the Rays have:

Ê played 243 home games. Ê won 13 of those games in some other walk-off fashion. Ê hit 244 home runs at Tropicana Field. Ê allowed 11 walk-off homers on the road.

Ê His 233 SO last season tied Sale for 2nd in the AL behind DET Justin Verlander (246)…since the start of the 2015 season, his 522 SO are 3rd in the majors (see below).

Ê MR. DURABLE—Leads the majors with 129 starts since June 1, 2013, the day he was recalled for good…following him on that list is DET/WAS Max Scherzer (128) and KC/SD/CWS James Shields (126)…Shields entered this season as the major league leader over that span, but is currently on the DL with a strained right lat.

Ê Currently ranks 4th in franchise history in strikeouts (843) and innings pitched (811.1)…is 31 SO and 22.2 IP shy of tying Scott Kazmir for 3rd on the club’s all-time list.

Ê THE CENTURY MARK—Has thrown at least 100 pitches in 16 straight starts, dating back to Aug 12, 2016, longest such streak of his career (prev. 9, June 23–Aug 9, 2015)…it’s the longest active streak in the majors and 3rd longest in club history, behind James Shields (21 in 2011-12) and David Price (19 in 2014)…threw under 100 pitches in 9 of his first 24 starts last season before his current streak began.

Ê PITCHING DEEPER—Three times this season he’s gone at least 7 IP and yielded 2 runs or fewer, tied for the 3rd most such starts in the AL
