Smart words

We’ve just got engaged - how early should I start planning?Congratulations! Celebrating your engagement is a wonderful time, so bask in it and don’t wish it away. Avoid the temptation to make any big decisions right away and take your time. When you do turn your attention to planning, it’s wise to start by assessing your budget. Boring but essential. Having a realistic idea of what you can afford is essential before you part with a penny.

I’m a very indecisive person – how can I help myself get focused when planning?Start with the basics and take it from there. Having a clear vision of your ideal wedding will guide the rest of your decisions with ease. What style of wedding do you visualise? City chic or rural retreat? Relaxed or formal? Be true to your personal style; don’t try to forge haute couture if you’re really a boho bride at heart. It also helps to think about the best weddings that you’ve been to and why they worked so well, this way you will know what’s important to you.

When planning, which things should be done first and what things can be left until last? With wedding planning, it’s easy to get distracted. So, before you spend £500 on candles and ribbons, make sure the

important things are covered first. It helps to make an ‘essentials’ and ‘non-essentials’ list so that your budget is used wisely. Choosing your venue and making arrangements for your ceremony should be top of the list. Whether you’re having a church service or a civil ceremony, it is essential that you have checked availability with the celebrant before confirming your reception venue, as these two aspects need to synchronise. Thereafter, you can turn your attention to the more fun aspects of wedding planning. And remember, the most sought-after suppliers will book up early, so if you have your heart set on a particular photographer, make-up artist or band, then snap them up before someone else does. How can I encourage my other half to become more involved in the planning?Try to engage your partner in something that sparks their interest. If you think they won’t be bothered about the napkin fold or the menu font, then perhaps they might like to choose wine for the tables, design an arrival cocktail or liaise with the DJ. Always play to their strengths and I’m sure you won’t be left disappointed.

We’d like to put together our own menu, but don’t know where to start. Any advice?Be true to yourselves and don’t fall into the trap of playing it safe because you’re worried what your guests might think. I served sea trout and guinea fowl at my wedding and everyone raved about it! Collaborate with your venue or caterer as they will be able to suggest dishes and ingredients that are not only seasonal, but fit the brief and look impressive. Always ask guests to note any dietary needs on their RSVP so that your venue can provide suitable alternatives on the day.

Award-winning wedding coordinator, Tanya Hedley, answers your burning bridal questions…

23 WEDDING ESSENTIALS MARCH/APRIL 16

How do I choose the right vendors and what happens if a problem arises on the big day?Seek recommendations from friends or family and ask to see examples of their work or client testimonials before booking. A good wedding supplier will provide the perfect balance of knowledge and professionalism, as well as being someone you get on with. This is particularly important when it comes to your photographer and videographer, as they will spend a lot of time interacting with you and your guests. Above all, it’s essential that you have trust and confidence in your supplier’s ability to understand your instructions and to meet your expectations. If anything does go wrong, it’s likely to be something very small and totally fixable. With good suppliers around you and a trusted point of contact on the day, chances are that you and your guests will not even notice a little hiccup! This is the true mark of a good wedding professional!

How do I tackle the seating plan without any family drama? It doesn’t matter whether your wedding is for 20 or 200 people, there is always a grumble from someone, so a thick skin is required! Before the wedding, try not to discuss your seating plans with family unless absolutely necessary. Make executive decisions with your partner and stick to them. Alert your wedding coordinator to anything you want to be sheltered from on the day.

How can I settle a case of the pre-wedding jitters? With careful planning you shouldn’t have this problem, but if you do, the chances are it’s just excitement - and it’s perfectly normal! Run through your plans and itinerary, ideally with a trusted friend, and satisfy yourself that everything has been taken care of. The night before the wedding should be reserved for a relaxing bath and a restful night’s sleep. Look over photos of you and your partner, dig out that box of cinema stubs and Valentine’s cards, remind yourself of your fondest memories… you’re guaranteed to go to bed like a kid on Christmas Eve! We want to ‘wow’ our guests – how do we ensure our wedding is unique? In the quest for perfection, don’t forget what’s really important – the love you share for each other! It is the most memorable thing for any guest. I see a lot of very beautiful weddings, but what always stands out to me is not who spent the most money, but who had guests laughing all day, who couldn’t get off the dance floor at 2am, the smiles, the kisses, the hugs and the reunions. In a year’s time your guests might not remember what you gave out as wedding favours or what song you walked down the aisle to, but they will remember having an amazing time and for this reason they will talk about your wedding for years to come!

F lowers by NattrassPinboardBloomin’ lovelyIf you live in or around Darlington, check out Flowers by Nattrass for all your petal needs, from bouquets and buttonholes to centrepieces and stylish church decor. The family business has been going strong for over 60 years and their bold and beautiful designs have earned them a huge following in and around the Durham and Teesside area. Pop in and have a look at the family’s extensive portfolio; they’ve decorated some of the most prestigious venues in the North East and can work with you to create one-of-a-kind designs to fit in with your wedding’s theme, colours and style. www.flowersbynattrass.com

Put a ring on itYour wedding band will (hopefully!) be on your finger for the long-run, so it definitely pays to invest in one you’ll be proud to show off for years to come. Berry’s Jewellers - one of the North East’s most distinguished retail jewellers - has been known for the superior quality of its jewellery and customer service for more than a century, making it a great place for you and your other half to visit next time you’re in Newcastle or York. The jewellers’ talented designers can create bespoke rings from scratch and all diamond rings are manufactured to individual specifications. www.berrysjewellers.co.uk 1. 18ct Yellow Gold Diamond Set Wedding Ring, £1,2952. Platinum Channel Set Diamond Ring with Beaded Edge, £1,495

Venues to visitThe North East is home to so many beautiful wedding venues, it can be a tough job deciding on where to settle! Two of our favourite, lesser-known venues to tie the knot at include Healey Barn, a simple and stunning converted farm house and courtyard near Corbridge, and Le Petit Chateau, the chic and contemporary

French cousin of award-winning Newton Hall (opening in April 2016). www.crippshealey.comwww.le-petit-chateau.com

Brrr...illiantExpect anything but a

frosty reception from your guests when they step into a space-age

igloo for a wedding party to outshine the rest.

Matty Brown, a well-known chef in the Teesside

area, has invested in funky inflatable igloo marquees to

offer something new to party-goers and couples looking for a venue

with an eye-catching difference. Igloos aren’t only for cold places - it’s a year-round venue that never gets too hot or cold. There’s a host of lighting programmes so the colour of the igloo can even fit your theme. Acoustics are great and the igloo itself is a fun and memorable talking point! As well as the venue hit, Matty can organise a huge range of dining options - including ice-lollies, of course! www.iglooeventsuk.com

Whereabouts can the ceremony take place? We are licensed for ceremonies in all our function rooms, however the Courtyard is the favourite amongst brides and grooms. Will we have exclusive use of the venue, day and night? We offer an exclusive use package, which commences from 12 noon on the day of arrival for 24 hours. We only ever host one wedding on a day, so the bride and groom will be the only couple within the hotel regardless. Can we design our own, unique menu? A consultation will be arranged with our executive head chef to discuss and create a bespoke menu, followed by a complimentary

menu tasting session before couples select their final choices.

Can the venue provide entertainment for children? Couples are encouraged to arrange their own childcare. If a large number of children are attending, rooms are available to use privately. Can we have candles and fireworks? Yes, fireworks are permitted but must be set off by 10.30pm at the latest. Candles are also permitted as long as they are in a holder.

Can animals be involved in the celebrations? Animals are permitted during ceremonies

when taking the hotel exclusively. Animals would not be permitted to stay in any of the rooms unless required for assistance. Can we enjoy any pre or post-wedding activities? Yes, we do encourage couples to look at pre-wedding/rehearsal dinners in one of our private function rooms. We also suggest having a family breakfast the following morning and booking treatments at our Serenity Spa.

Honeymoon hotspots...

Remote & romanticLaid back Bali is a paradise for honeymooners and surprisingly good value for money to boot! The island offers secluded villa suites with private plunge pools aplenty, as well as intimate beach-front properties. If you’re going all that way, combine the beach with the arty hilltop community of Ubud, draped in dense greenery and dramatic ravines. HOT HOTEL: Stay at the boutique ‘The Elysian’ in fashionable Seminyak, a village of villas all with private pools, then head to The Viceroy at Ubud (recently voted one of the best hotels in the world by Trip Advisor) with stunning views out over the valley.

Buzzy city vibeUber-hip and easy to get to, Berlin is a great shout for a city-moon. You’ll find a perfect blend of living history, culture and vibrant night-life, not to mention great places to stay from self-catered loft apartments to swanky boutique hotels. HOT HOTEL: Nestled in the diplomatic district (right opposite the Teirgarten and Berlin Zoo), Das Stue was once the Danish Embassy. Now, it’s a luxurious boutique hotel revelling in Berlin’s revival of old-world glamour. Fabulously spacious suites, fine cuisine and relaxed, but oh so stylish, interiors make this the coolest address in Berlin right now.

Adrenaline rushComplete with jungle retreats flanked by beach-front hideaways, Costa Rica is growing in popularity as a honeymoon destination for those looking for a mix of beach life and adventure. Adrenaline junkies can try rafting, kayaking and surfing or a mountain hike into the cloud forests. Ensure you include a visit to Arenal Volcano, one of the ten most active in the world. HOT HOTEL: Plenty of luxury hotels sit (safely) around the perimeter of the volcano, but Nayara is one of best, with plush accommodation, impeccable service, fine cuisine and a great spa. Don’t forget to ask for a room with a volcano view!

Stateside glamourHome to glamourous South Beach and famed for its art deco vibe, trendy clubs and surf-side hotels, Miami Beach is perfect for hip, sun-loving honeymooners. It’s easy to get to, warm all year long and has bucket loads

in association with

Tick box timeThe details you might have forgotten…

Planning your wedding day is fun and exciting but can be a little overwhelming. The ‘to-do’ list seems to grow on a daily basis. Venues confirmed, deposits paid, top-table sorted? Not to mention the budget and a contingency fund for any unexpected costs.Legal issues arising from your marriage are the less obvious details to consider but they can be every bit as important as the shade of the groom’s tie – in fact, even more so in the long run.

Wedding planning timelineIMMEDIATELY • Work out how many people you expect to

be at the day and evening of your wedding. Rough numbers are fine, however this can often dictate which wedding venue is suitable.

• Draw up a budget. • View and decide on a wedding venue

and date.

Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm is on hand to guide you through all stages of your life and few are as life-changing as your wedding day.

• Start your hair and makeup trials. • Order your wedding cake.

2 - 3 MONTHS• Buy your accessories. • Send your invitations. • Apply for your marriage licence.• Consider your wedding dress alterations. • Choose your menu.

ONE MONTH• Pull together your final guest list. • Plan your seating chart. • Have your final wedding dress fitting. • Print your order of service, menus or anything

else you may need. • Buy gifts for your bridal party and parents. • Send your picture list to your photographer.

THE WEEK BEFORE• Finalise your seating chart. • Confirm your details with all of your suppliers. • Have your wedding rehearsal.

So here’s the legal tick-box list:• Marriage automatically voids any will which

already exists. A new will accounts for your change in circumstances so your affairs would not be left to the vagaries of the intestacy rules.

• A pre or post-nuptial agreement isn’t only for Hollywood couples. It’s a myth that these types of arrangements are only for the rich and famous. If you are entering into a marriage with children from a previous relationship, properties or investments, you should consider how they could be affected by your new marital status. It is important to ‘futureproof’ your assets.

• If you are buying your first home together, you could benefit from the ‘Help To Buy ISA’ which the government has recently launched.

• The team at Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm offers a calming hand when it comes to ticking the legal boxes.

Find us tbilaw

• Start researching suppliers such as photographers, florists and cake makers.

9 - 12 MONTHS• Order your dress. • Select your bridal party. • Book your key suppliers. • View potential bands or DJs and make

some bookings. • Look at accommodation for any guests

who are travelling up for your day.• Book your hen party.

6 - 9 MONTHS• Send your save the dates. • Order your bridesmaid dresses. • Book your honeymoon. • Order your wedding rings.

3 - 6 MONTHS• Order your groomsmen’s suits.
