2009 Wagner Seahawk Football Game 6 vs. Monmouth

Last Time Out: Bryant 6, Wagner 2

Smithfield, RI – After taking part in the highest-scoring game in Northeast Conference (NEC) history last week, the Wagner College football team found itself in a defensive battle with Bryant, coming up on the short end of a 6-2 decision at windy and soggy Bulldog Stadium.

The Seahawks came into the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring at 41.8 points per game following a 56-48 triple-overtime win over Saint Francis (PA) last week but were unable to muster any offensive points vs. the stout Bulldog defense.

Wagner falls to 2-3 on the season, 1-1 in the NEC while Bryant moves to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in league play.

The lone Wagner points of the game came on a safety which broke the 0-0 tie and gave the Seahawks a short-lived 2-0 lead. With 3:22 to play in the third quarter and Bryant punting from its own 10-yard line, an errant snap sailed into the end zone and Bulldog punter Tim Miscovich wisely booted through the end zone for the safety as Wagner took the 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

That’s the way the score remained until a bad snap on a punt have Bryant possesson for the ball at the Wagner 37-yard line. From there, Bryant put together a five-play, 37-yard drive, capped by a 17-yard TD jaunt with 10:29 left in the game by RB Jerell Smith, who would finished the day with 178 yards on 31 carries. The extra-point try failed, leaving the Bulldogs with the scant four-point lead. Wagner had its opportunities throughout the second half, taking over several times with excellent field position, but the Bulldogs had every answer on defense.

Bulldog QB Matt Croce completed 10-of-24 passes for 120 yards.

While the potent Wagner offense was held in check, this was clearly the Seahawks’ best defensive game of the season. Coming into the game, Wagner was yielding 40.5 points per game. Statistically, Bryant did out-gain Wagner 340 yards to 105.

Freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Milford), coming off three straight 100-yard plus rushing performances, was Wagner’s leading ground-gainer with 49 yards on 14 carries. Freshman QB Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) completed 5-of-12 passes for 46 yards and ran for 23 yards on 17 carries, a statistic skewed by being sacked twice for minus 13 yards.

Defensively for Wagner, sophomore LB Dom Gaston (Phillipsburg, NJ/ Bergen Catholic) and freshman LB C.O. Prime (Quebec, CA/ The Kent School) led the Wagner defense nine tackles apiece.

Freshman LB C.O. Prime had nine tackles and a forced fumble vs.

Bryant.

Head CoachWalt Hameline

Now in his 29th year as Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach at Wagner College, the relentlessly energetic and opt imis t ic Wal t Hameline continues to amass an astounding

record of achievement and consistency. Under Hameline’s leadership, the Seahawk athletic department has undergone an ambitious expansion in both sport offerings and facility improvements. Known for his keen vision and boundless enthusiam, Hameline was influential in establishing the Seahawk Golf Classic, now in its 19th year, and the Seahawk Club, a pair of intitiaves aimed at increasing funds for the scholarship endowment and complete financial support for the athletic department. Most recently under Hameline’s direction, the Wagner College Stadium field has been resurfaced with a state-of-the-art Field Turf playing surface. This multi-purpose surface was constructed in the summer of 2006 and is used for football, soccer and lacrosse. In 1997 Hameline governed the opening of Wagner’s football stadium and outdoor track & field facility and was instrumental in erecting the Spiro Sports Center in the spring of 1999 - a 93,000 square-foot building which houses a 2,100-seat, multi-purpose arena, a six-lane swimming pool, team locker rooms and all athletic department offices. In 1995, Hameline oversaw the opening of new athletic fields at the base of Grymes Hill to house additional teams. This multi-sport facility is presently home to the Seahawk softball team which, in 2007, underwent a vast reconstruction. An institution of high academic standards, Wagner was cited in the March 18, 2002 edition of US News & World Report for have the 15th best graduation rate amongst more than 300 Division I college and/or universities. Hameline’s coaching record speaks for itself. Heading into the 2009 season, he owns an all-time record of 189-105-2 (.642). Those 189 victories are tied for sixth on the all-time career list among all active Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) coaches, leaving him 11 wins shy of becoming just the fourth coach in FBS history to accumulate 200 career wins. The 189 wins also rank him within the top 25 of active head coaches among all collegiate levels. In 2007, he guided the Seahawks to their 22nd winning season, a fine 7-4 mark. In addition, the Seahawks boasted the NEC’s Offensive Player of the Year in RB Jason Butler as well as four other first-team All-NEC choices. Kicker/Punter Piotr Czech, the greatest specialist in NEC and Wagner history, was an AFCA All-American who went on to sign a free agent contact with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens (now with Pittsburgh Steelers). DB Al Phillips inked a free agent contract with the New York Jets while DE Robert Brown was named an Associated Press Third-Team All-American. Hameline’s overall coaching ledger includes five ECAC Championships, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship — all told, 10 post-season appearances in 26 seasons. Hameline won his 175th career game - all at Wagner with a come-from-behind victory over St. Francis (PA) in the 2005 season finale. He became the winningest coach in Wagner College history in 1990, and boasts a .642 winning percentage at 189-105-2, which ranks in the top 10 among active FCS coaches in the United States. The highlight, of course, is the 19-3 win over heavily-favored Dayton in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship. Against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Hameline’s Seahawks rolled to a 13-1 record, winning more games than any college football team in America. The team earned the school’s second Lambert Trophy, symbolic of football superiority in the East among Division III schools, and ECAC Team of the Year recognition. Hameline was honored by many organizations including the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year. Hameline was one of 23 members of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Committee (MIBA), which previously stood as the governing body of the National Invitation Tournament. He is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association as well as the Division I-AA Eastern Regional Football Advisory Committee. The 57 year-old administrator, has been a key developer of the Northeast Conference, serving on numerous committees and served as president of the league. Eight years ago, Hameline was honored for his playing, coaching and administrative achievements when he was inducted into the Utica Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, Hameline was given the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. An outstanding defensive back at Brockport State, Hameline received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1975, and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in education from the University of Albany in 1977. Hameline resides in Colts Neck, NJ, with his wife, Debbie, and their daughters Kristen and Kelly.

Scouting Monmouth....Monmouth (2-2, 1-0 NEC) , which was idle this past week, won their second straight contest of the 2009 season with a 31-28 victory over Old Dominion (Sept. 26) in Norfolk, VA. The win was the first for Monmouth on the road this year and it was played in front of the second-largest crowd the Hawks have ever seen

(19,782). RB David Sinisi rushed for 216 yards on a career-high 41 carries at ODU. The game marked the third time that Sinisi has rushed for more than 200 yards. Coming into the game he needed just 80 yards to become the second player in NEC history to eclipse the 4,000 yard plateau, he now has 4,136. It was Sinisi’s 20th 100-yard rushing performance of his career. He also was responsible for three TDs, running two and throwing one to fellow back Bobby Giles. The 24-yard pass was the fifth year senior’s fourth TD pass of his career. The ODU game marked the third straight in which the Hawks recorded multiple interceptions, with Ken Amsel and Joe Valenti making picks. Amsel returned his INT 55 yards. It was the sixth pick of his career, moving him into ninth all-time among MU players. He also had two other pass breakups in the game. Rookie quarterback Kyle Frazier made his first career start against the Monarchs, finishing the game 14-of-19 passing for 138 yards and one touchdown pass to fellow rookie tight end Tyler George. The attempts, completions, and yards were all career-highs for Frazier. He also converted a key third down with a career-long 25 yard run.

NEC Gains Access to NCAAPost-Season Bracket

Last April, the NCAA announced that the Northeast Conference will gain auto-matic access into the Division I Football Championships beginning in 2010. NEC Football is also eligible for automatic qualification into the championship bracket during the 2008 and 2009 sea-sons if its champion meets specifications of the bridge program.

“This is a great day for the Northeast Conference, college football in gen-eral and Wagner College in particular,” said Wagner Director of Athletics/Head Football Coach Walt Hameline. “Hav-ing access to the playoffs adds value to our football program and allows NEC student-athletes a chance to compete in post-season play and, ultimately, for a national championship.

Beginning in 2010, there will be an an increase in the number of FCS playoff participants to 20, a 25 percent rise from its current 16-team format. The NEC will acquire one of the four added berths and be guaranteed an opportunity to play for the 2010 FCS Championship.

Bryant Begins First Season asNortheast Conference Member

Coming off a 7-4 season, the Bryant Bulldogs enter their first season as a Northeast Conference member not far off from being a contender. Competing as an independent in 2008 when they began the NCAA reclassifying process, the Bulldogs defeated four of the six NEC members they faced. Head coach Marty Fine welcomes back 17 of 22 starters, 10 of whom played for one of the stingiest run defenses (99.4 ypg) in Division I FCS.

Freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/Milford Academy) was been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week for his efforts on Saturday, Sept. 19 at North Dakota St (NDSU). The 5-9, 200-pound Williams rushed for more than 100 yards for the second consecutive week, with 21 carries for 131 yards and one touchdown during the Seahawks’ setback in the Fargodome. The elusive and speedy Williams averaged 6.2 yards per carry, breaking off runs of 12, 38, and 12 yards en route to producing the highest rushing total by a rookie in the NEC thus far this season. His 38-yard second-quarter scamper down to the NDSU 21-yard line set up Wagner’s first touchdown which came one play later. Williams’ 12-yard touchdown run tied the game at 14-14 with 5:59 remaining in the second quarter before the host Bison rattled off three quick scores before halftime en route to a 59-28 win. William’s 131-yard outburst came on the heels of a seven-carry, 114-yard, two-touchdown effort in Wagner’s 41-10 win at SUNY-Maritime on Sept. 10. For the season, Williams leads the Seahawks in rushing with 274 yards on 37 carries, a robust 7.4 yards per carry average.

From 104 Combined Points to 8After taking part in the highest-scoring game in Northeast Conference (NEC) history last week, the Wagner College football team found itself in a defensive battle with Bryant, coming up on the short end of a 6-2 decision at windy and soggy Bulldog Stadium. The Seahawks came into the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring at 41.8 points per game following a 56-48 triple-overtime win over Saint Francis (PA) last week but were unable to muster any offensive points vs. the stout Bulldog defense. In consecutive games, Wagner played in a contest that featured 104 combined points and then played a game that featured just eight combined points.

Seahawks Now 14th in Nation in ScoringWagner is now averaging 33.8 points per game, which is No. 1 in the NEC and No. 14 in the nation. The lone Wagner points of the game came on a safety which broke the 0-0 tie and gave the Seahawks a short-lived 2-0 lead. With 3:22 to play in the third quarter and Bryant punting from its own 10-yard line, an errant snap through the end zone for the safety as Wagner took the 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Low ScoringThe last time Wagner held an NEC opponent to six points or less was on Oct. 26, 2002 when the Seahawks posted a 7-6 win over Monmouth. The last time the Seahawks were held without any offensive points was in a 14-0 home loss to Duquesne on Nov. 8, 2008.

Muir Among Nation’s BestLeft-footed junior punter Kyle Muir (Spencerport, NY/ Hudson CC) continues to be an effective weapon. Against Bryant, he was asked to punt seven times and despite the rain and soggy field conditions, he

averaged 40.4 yards, highlighted by a 60-yard effort. Of his seven punts, four were downed inside the Bulldogs’ 20-yard line. Muir’s 41.18 season average is second in the NEC and 20th nationally.

2009 Wagner Seahawk Football Game 6 vs. Monmouth

Doscher First Wagner QB to Rush for 100-plus Yards in 42 YearsIn rushing for 144 yards, Doscher became the first Seahawk quarterback to rush for 100 yards or more in a game in 42 years. The last time a Seahawk signal-caller cracked the century mark n rushing was Pete Boatti, who gained 107 yards on 16 carries in a 20-13 win over Lycoming on Sept. 30, 1967.

First Overtime Game in Five YearsThe last time Wagner had played an overtime game was on Oct. 2, 2004 when the Seahawks dropped a 30-24 overtime contest at Sacred Heart. The 56 points scored by Wagner are the most the Seahawks have scored in a game since Nov. 15, 1998 when Wagner earned a 62-44 victory at Jacksonville. It marked the first time the Seahawks topped the 50-point mark in a game since defeating Saint Peter’s 52-25 on Sept. 15, 2005.

Placide Special Teams Demon AgainJunior defensive back Frantz Placide (Miami, FL/ Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) blocked a Red Flash fourth quarter punt in the end zone and recovered the ball to put the Seahawks up 34-31. It marked his second blocked punt of the season and fifth of his career. Wagner had two blocked punts in the game, one by freshman LB Matt Heacock (Catonsville, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) and the other by Placide.

Linebackers ShineFreshman linebacker C.O. Prime played an instrumental role in limiting Bryant to just six points. The Canadian native, who prepped one year at The Kent School in Connecticut, record nine tackles, highlighted by a game-high eight solo stops. He also forced a fumble in the game. Sophomore LB Dom Gaston (Phillipsburg/ Bergen Catholic) was also around the ball all afternoon, tying for team-high honors with Prime with nine tackles. The nine tackles by Prime and Gaston are both career highs.

Defense ImprovingWagner came into the game yielding more than 40 points per game on defense but showed tremendous improvement on that side of the ball vs. Bryant. Hope for similar defensive days lie ahead in the fact that of the Seahawks’ top 10 leading tacklers, nine of them are underclassmen. Sophomore safety Jeremiah Brown (Brooklyn, NY/ Grand Street Campus) is the team’s leading tackler with 34 to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and one forced fumble.

Williams 100-Yard Streak Ends Freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Milford), who was coming off three straight 100-plus yard rushing days, was limited to 49 yards on 14 carries. For the season, Williams has 425 rushing yards to lead the team and is averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

Dynamic Freshman Duo Shine vs. Saint Francis (PA)Freshman QB Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) rushed for 144 yards on 24 carries and three TDs while throwing for 98 yards and freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgetown, NJ/ Milford) added 102 yards on 21 carries and four TDs rushing to lead Wagner to a wild 56-48 triple-overtime victory over Saint Francis (PA) in the Northeast Conference (NEC) season opener for both teams. For Dominique Williams, it marked the third straight game he has topped the 100-yard mark as he rushed for 107 vs. SUNY-Maritime (9/10), 131 vs. North Dakota St. (9/19). Doscher and Williams accounted for 44 of Wagner’s 56 points, with Williams scoring 24 points on his four TDs and Doscher tallying 20 points on his three TDs and a two-point conversion.

The Scoreboard Said it All

On Sept. 26, Wagner and Saint Francis (PA) played a triple-overtime thriller, which marked the highest-scoring game in Northeast Confer-ence history.

Matt Martin and Stefen Gage Named to Phil Steele’s 2009 Preseason All-NEC Team Senior offensive lineman Matt Martin (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and junior safety Stefen Gage (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) have been named to Phil Steele’s 2009 Preseason All-NEC Team.

Phil Steele’s College Football Preview is one of the nation’s most informative preseason football magazines and annually selects preseason FCS All-Conference and preseason FCS All-American teams.

The 6-4, 315-pound Martin, who was named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-NEC First-Team, has been a mainstay on the Seahawk offensive line since his arrival on Grymes Hill in 2005. He has seen action in 30 games during his time at Wagner, playing both the offensive tackle and guard positions. Martin possesses excellent feet with a rare blend of size, strength and agility. An early season leg injury in 2008 sidelined him for the remainder of the season and he will be competing in 2009 as a fifth-year senior.

Gage was named to Phil Steele’s Preseason All-NEC Second-Team. He is coming off a breakout season in 2008 where he finishing second on the team in tackles with 95, with a team-best 42 solo stops and 53 assisted tackles. The 6-0, 185-pound Gage also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss for minus 14 yards, three pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one sack and one interception. Gage was also a mainstay on special teams where he was a gunner on the punt coverage team.

Gage has sat out the first two games of the season due to injury.

Matt Martin anchors the Seahawk offensive line from his right guard position.

As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlooking Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent residential liberal arts college enrolling a capacity of over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest fi nancial and cultural capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily prescient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all other all liberal arts colleges in the country. Wagner is New York State’s southernmost college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida.

The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading fi nancial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. They circulate in the city’s unparalleled creative environment of museums, media, and performing arts. This is their laboratory. They immerse themselves and are inspired by the city’s sheer energy.

The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master new skills and technologies, and to refl ect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the classroom.

A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gardens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New York Harbor. No wonder Wagner students voted their campus Most Beautiful in the Princeton Review’s Poll in 2005. The carefully tended campus is yet one more manifestation of the nurturing environment Wagner provides its students.

THIS IS W A G N E R C O L L E G E

Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic colleg setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 television series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Richard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private military school in the HBO series, The Sopranos. The school was also used a a backdrop for current shows, Rescue Me and Law & Order.

Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region.

By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and national reputation – Wagner is ascending the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the liberal arts with a commitment to service and preparation for the professions.

Campus life includes the array of sports provided by an NCAA Division I program which is housed in a 93,000-square-foot sports center featuring an extensive fi tness center, an indoor NCAA swimming pool and a basketball arena. A football and track & fi eld stadium showcases a variety of playing fi elds throughout the campus including baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer venues.

Wagner’s alumni include Broadway Tony award winners, movie stars, fi lm producers, playwrights, and Fortune 500 CEO’s including the chairman of GE Investments, the chairman of Dupont Europe, the chairman Emeritus of The Oppenheimer Management Company and the chairman of the New York Power Authority.

Visitors to and residents of New York City alike enjoy access to a rich and diverse array of museums, cultural organizations, arts performances, sports teams, societies and attractions. Some of the best and most famous attractions in the world call New York City home.

Wagner Unveils Fresh LookNew Athletics Web Site, Logos Launched

In August, 2008, the Wagner College Athletic De-partment is proud to roll out a fresh, new look with the introduction of a set of newly-designed logos as well as a revamped athletics website.

Wagner’s new athletics website, which will remain as www.wagnerathletics.com, was designed by In-ternet Consulting Services, Inc. (ICS), a Syracuse, NY based company that has spent the past 12 years providing clients with innovative technological solu-tions for their web needs.

Since its founding, ICS has pioneered technologies in web design, content management systems, e-com-merce solutions, and many other areas. ICS boasts a client list that entails more than 200 clients from around the country and in Canada.

“We are so pleased Wagner College has chosen to partner with ICS to build and host the new www.wagnerathletics.com website,” said ICS President and CEO Jeff Rubin “Our goal with all clients is to develop the latest and greatest technology to add to the alumni, parent and fan experience.

“This new Website helps demonstrates Wagner’s commitment to excellence in collegiate athletics and their ongoing desire to help promote their program and their student athletes,” Rubin continued. “We ap-preciate the hard work of the Wagner staff for their efforts and cooperation throughout the development of the site.”

The new logos were developed in an effort to build a stronger brand with a modernized, sleeker look and to achieve greater consistency with its athletics lo-gos. These new marks consist of primary identity, secondary mark, as well as wordmark logos. The new logos were designed by Joseph Keegan, the principal owner and creative director of Keegan Design, a de-sign fi rm that specializes in branding identities.

Wagner College worked in close conjunction with Kee-gan Design during the re-branding process. Before the development of his own fi rm, Keegan worked as a senior graphic designer in many infl uential brand-ing and design agencies throughout the Northeast. Keegan Design was founded in 2005 and specializes

in the conception and development of brand commu-nications for sports teams, corporations and special events. “I enjoyed working with the staff at Wagner College on this project,” said Keegan. They were very infl u-ential in forging ahead with an innovative and unique mark.”

“We are very excited about introducing our new web-site design and the timing matches perfectly with our new logos,” said Wagner Director of Athletics Walt Hameline. “In ICS and Keegan Design, we partnered with two extremely competent and professional or-ganizations.

“I must also commend the many members of our athletic department, especially our sports informa-tion and marketing areas, who have worked so hard on making these projects a realit.

“We are equally enthusiastic to be unveiling our new and exciting logo designs,” added Hameline. “We feel these new marks are more eye-catching and recog-nizable and will serve to enhance our brand. I am confi dent that our student-athletes and all Seahawk fans across the land will be well-served by these new initiatives.”

GAME 1: Seahawks Drop Wild 45-42 Shoot-out vs. Stonehill in Season Opener

Staten Island, NY (Sept. 5)– In a wild shoot-out that featured a host of big plays and massive momentum swings, Wagner College (0-1) saw a last-ditch effort come up a tad short as Stonehill (1-1) eked out at 45-42 victory, staving off a frantic Seahawk comeback attempt in hanging on for the win.

With 48 seconds left in the game, Seahawk junior safety Frantz Placide (Miami. FL/ Archibishop Curley Notre Dame) recovered a perfectly executed onsides kick by freshman placekicker David Lopez (Plantation, FL/American Heritage), catching the high-bouncing kick in mid-stride at the Stonehill 48-yard line. Junior QB Tyler Newberry (Germantown, MD/Mercersburg Prep), who came on to replace starter Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic)in the third quarter, then executed his third straight impressive drive, moving Wagner into field goal range.

Faced with a fourth-and two on the Skyhawk 12-yard line and six seconds remaining, Lopez came on to attempt a 29-yard field goal that would have sent the game into overtime. But his attempt, from the left hash mark, missed wide right as Stonehill escaped with the win

Placide returned the game’s opening kickoff 89 yards for a TD, then turned in another brilliant special teams play, blocking a second quarter punt and scooping it up and running 17 yards to help stake Wagner to a 28-14 second quarter lead. But the Skyhawks closed the half with 21 unanswered points on a 91-yard kickoff return by Stephan Neville, a 52-yard TD run by Eddie Vachon, and a 12-yard TD connection from QB Tim Morrison to Oscar Alvarez to a seize a 35-28 halftime lead.

Stonehill scored the first 10 points of the second half to make it 31 straight points in taking a seemingly commanding 45-28 lead with 14:14 left left to play before Newberry led the Seahawks back. He guided Wagner on an eight-play, 45-yard drive capped by a three-yard TD run by RB Shane Smith (Susquehanna, PA/ Milford) with 5:28 left in the game to make it 45-35. Backed up to their own two-yard line, Newberry then marched the Seahawks 98 yards in 10 plays, highlighted by a 50-yard strike to senior WR Lon Woods (St. Petersburg, FL/ J.P. Taravella), who was tripped up at the two-yard line. Newberry then hit rangy 6-3 sophomore WR David Crawford (Carrollton, TX/ Hebron) on a fade route in the back right corner of the end zone to close the gap to 45-42 with 49 seconds left to play, setting up the game’s near-dramatic ending.

In building the early 28-14 lead, Doscher connected on six of his first seven pass attempts. He caped a 12-play, 65-yard drive with a five-yard TD run to make it a 14-7 Wagner lead. Seahawk sophomore DE Quintin Anderson (Rochester, NY/ Penfield) then scooped up a fumble and and returned it 15 yards to the Skyhawk two-yard line, setting up two-yard TD plunge by sophomore FB Richard Parker (Carona, NY/ Bayside) to give Wagner a 21-7 lead.

The Seahawks, however, struggled to contain Stonehill’s shifty RB Eddie Vachon, particularly in the first half, when he gained 152 yards on 15 carries, en route to a 27-carry, 191-yard afternoon. Morrison was just 5-of-13 through the air for 112 yards but two of his aerials went for TDs.

For Wagner, Newberry finished 10-of-21 passing for 156 yards, one TD and INT. Doscher, the 22-year old freshman who spent four seasons as a catcher in the Kansas City Royals farm system, completed 8-of-14 passes for 68 yards and rished for 27 yards on 10 carries. Woods had four catches for 99 yards while Crawford had four catches for 44 yards. Smith led Wagner on the ground with 34 yards rushing.

Sophomore LB Jeremiah Brown (Brooklyn, NY/ Grand Street Campus) had 14 tackles to pace the Seahawks while junior LB Keith Davis (Harrisburg, PA/ Globe Institute) and freshman LB Nick Vetterlein (Allendale, NJ/ Don Bosco Prep) recorded nine tackles apiece. Senior DT Joe Harkins (Washington, DC/ St. John’s College) had eight stops, one sack and three tackles for loss.

2009 Wagner Seahawk Football Game 6 vs. Monmouth

Game 2: Wagner 41, SUNY-Maritime 10, Sept. 10, 2009

Throgs Neck, NY - Junior QB Tyler Newberry (Germantown, MD/ Mercersburg Academy) was an efficient 13-of-16 passing for 210 yards and freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Milford) rushed for 114 yards on seven carries, including fourth quarter touchdown runs of 31 and 63 yards, to lead Wagner past SUNY-Maritime 41-10 With the victory, the Seahawks even their record at 1-1, rebounding from last Saturday’s tough 45-42 home loss to Stonehill. With the loss, the Privateers fell to 1-1 on the season.

Wagner got on the board first when Newberry hit sophomore WR David Crawford (Carrollton, TX/ Hebron) in stride in the middle of the field for a 49-yard TD strike with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter to give the Seahawks an early 7-0 lead. The Newberry to Crawford connection capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive that elapsed 3:57. For Crawford, it marked his second TD of the season and was a career-long reception.

The Wagner defense then forced the Privateer’s multiple option-oriented offensive attack into a three and out. Freshman QB Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) then came on in relief of Newberry in the second quarter and engineered a crisp, 10-play, 40

yard march that resulted in a three-yard TD burst by Doscher. The extra point attempt was blocked, however, leaving the Seahawks with a 13-0 lead with 8:06 remaining in the opening half.

Maritime then put together a methodical and efficient, 17-play, 75-yard drive. With the Privateers knocking on the door with a fourth and goal at the one yard line with seven seconds left in the opening half, the Seahawk defense stuffed QB Anthony Gagliano at the line of scrimmage as the Seahawks sprinted into the locker room brimming with momentum, confidence, and a 13-0 lead. Newberry was 4-of-5 passing in the opening half for 84 yards while Doscher was 3-of-4 for 23 yards as the Seahawks were 7-of-9 through the air for 107 yards.

Wagner opened the second half with a flourish, as Newberry connected with senior WR Lon Woods (St. Petersburg, FL/ J.P. Taravella) on a 45-yard TD hook up to cap a quick three-play, 65 yard drive that gave the Seahawks a commanding 20-0 lead.

Maritime countered with an 11-play, 41 yard march that culminated in an 18-yard field goal by Madison Leary, breaking the shutout and cutting the deficit to 20-3. After the Maritime defense stiffened late in the game, the Privateers embarked on a 10-play, 60-yard drive, with fullback Jamie Spanopoulos covering the final 12 yards on a quick hitter up the middle. The drive, which took 5:50, sliced the deficit in half and brought Maritime within 20-10.

After Newberry hit Woods on a 28-yard third down strike, a fumbled exchange gave the ball back to Maritime on at the Privateer 30-yard line, Wagner’s first turnover of the game. After an exchange of punts, junior DB Frantz Placide (Miami, FL/ Arhibishop Curley Notre Dame) downed the ball at the Privateer two-yard line with less than 10 minutes to play.

After a three and out, the Seahawks took over at the Privateer 31-yard line. Freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgeton, NJ/ Milford) burst up the middle 31 yards for his first career touchdown, building the lead to 27-10. Williams then capped the game by scampering 63 yards up the left sideline with 4:52 to play to lift Wagner to a 34-10 lead. Junior RB Jeremy Martinez (Brookhaven, NY/ Bellport) rounded out the day’s scoring with a five-yard TD run with 1:28 left in the game.

Game 3: North Dakota St. 59, Wagner 28

FARGO, ND - The Wagner College football team battled powerful North Dakota St. (NDSU) on even terms early as the score was tied 14-14 in the second quarter before the Bison reeled off 31 consecutive points bridging the first and second halves en route to a 59-28 victory in front of a raucous crowd of 18,128 at the Fargodome. With the loss, Wagner fell to 1-2 on the season while the Bison improved to 1-2.

Wagner, which entered the game averaging a Northeast Conference (NEC) best 41.5 points per game, managed to score four touchdowns vs. the Bison.

One major bright spot for the Seahawks was the continued fine play of true freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgton, NJ/ Milford), who rushed for 131 yards on 21 carries, including a long run of 38 yards and a 12-yard second quarter TD scamper that tied the game at 14-14.

This effort comes on the heels of a seven-carry, 114-yard effort in last week’s 41-10 win over SUNY-Maritime.

In addition to traveling more than 1,500 miles, the Seahawks were facing a perennial upper echelon FCS program that plays out of the Missouri Valley Conference and held down the No. 1 ranking in the FCS Coaches Top 25 for 10 weeks over the past two seasons.

North Dakota St. opened the game’s scoring with a quick seven-play, 90-yard drive capped by a 15-yard TD pass from QB Nick Mertens to WR D.J. McNorton to make it 7-0.

With the Bison up 7-0. Mertens was intercepted in the left flat by DE Quintin Anderson(Roschester, NY/ Penfield), who returned it 53 yards up the left sideline to the NDSU eight-yard line but a personal foul penalty negated the runback as Wagner began the drive at its own 35-yard line.

Seahawk true freshman QB Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Monsignor Farrell) then took over for starting QB Tyler Newberry (Germantown, MD/ Mercersburg Prep) and executed a sharp three-play, 65-yard TD drive. Doscher hit junior WR Justin Matthews (Hillside, NJ/ Hillside) on a six-yard gain which was followed by a Williams 38-yard run that set up a first down at the Bison 21-yard line. On the next play, Doscher rolled out to his this left and threw across his body, hitting WR Lon Woods (St. Petersburg, FL/ J.P. Taravella) on a 21-yard TD strike to tie the game at 7-7.

After a long kickoff return set up the Bison at the Seahawk 26-yard line, NDSU went up 14-7 on a one-yard TD run by Pat Paschall that capped a four-play drive.

Wagner countered with an impressive drive as Doscher led Wagner on a nine-play, 74-yard march that ended with an impressive 12-yard TD run by Dominique Williams, who dashed untouched off the right side to tie the game at 14-14.

After NDSU ran off those 31 consecutive points, Wagner got back on the board when junior DB Stefen Gage (Syracuse, NY/ Henninger), recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for his first career touchdown. Gage, a preseason All-Northeast Conference selection by Phil Steele’s Magazine, was seeing his first action of the season after missing the Seahawks’ first two games due to injury.

Junior RB Jeremy Martinez (Brookhaven, NY/Bellport) rounded out the scoring for Wagner with a five-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Doscher completed 7-of-8 passes for 88 yards. Senior DB Jorel Joseph (Fairfax Station, VA/ Bishop Ireton) was the Seahawks’ leading tackler with seven.

NDSU, which held a 531-277 edge in total yards was led by the rushing of RB Pat Paschall who gained 167 yards on just 10 carries, aided by a 91-yard TD run. Mertens was 12-of-21 passing for 182 yards.

Freshman RB Dominique Williams is the Seahawks’

leading rusher with 274 yards and is coming off a 21-carry,

131-yard game at North Dakota St. For his efforts, Williams

was named NEC Rookie of the Week.

2009 Wagner Seahawk Football Game 6 vs. Monmouth

Game 4: Wagner 56, Saint Francis (PA) 48 - 3-OT

Staten Island, NY – Freshman QB Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Moore Catholic) rushed for 144 yards on 24 carries and three TDs while throwing for 98 yards and freshman RB Dominique Williams (Bridgetown, NJ/ Milford) added 102 yards on 21 carries and four TDs rushing to lead Wagner to a wild 56-48 triple-overtime victory over Saint Francis (PA) in the Northeast Conference (NEC) season opener for both teams.

In winning the first triple-overtime game in school history, the Seahawks improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Flash fall to 1-3 on the season in what was the NEC season opener for both teams. Wagner, which came into the game No.1 in the NEC and No. 13 nationally in scoring offense at 37.0 points per game. The Seahawks are now averaging a whopping 41.8 points per game, moving up to No. 2 in the nation in scoring behind only Stephen F. Austin (No. 1 at 55.0 points per game). Wagner has now topped the 40-point mark in three games this season, having scored 42 vs. Stonehill (9/5) and 41 vs. SUNY-Maritime (9/10).

In rushing for 144 yards, Doscher became the first Seahawk quarterback to rush for 100 yards or more in a game in 42 years. The last time a Seahawk signal-caller cracked the century mark in rushing was Pete Boatti, who gained 107 yards on 16 carries in a 20-13 win over Lycoming on Sept. 30, 1967.

In posting the pulsating victory, Wagner needed to overcome a 31-14 deficit . A Williams two-yard TD run with 13:20 left in the game, followed by a one-yard Doscher TD plunge with 5:50 left, drew the Seahawks within 31-28. Junior defensive back Frantz Placide (Miami, FL/ Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) then blocked a Red Flash punt in the end zone and recovered the ball to put the Seahawks up 34-31. A low snap on the extra point try, however, allowed Saint Francis (PA) an opportunity to tie the game. The Red Flash did just that by marching 10 plays in 67 yards. The key play in the drive was a 16-yard run by freshman QB John Kelly on fourth-and-five which set up Josh Thiel’s 20-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game into overtime tied at 34-34.

In college overtime games, each team gains possession of the ball at the opposing team’s 25-yard line and then alternate possessions. Saint Francis (PA) won the coin toss and deferred, putting Wagner’s offense on the field first. Williams scampered in from three yards out on the fourth play from scrimmage to put the Seahawks on top 41-34. The Red Flash quickly countered, with Kelly hitting wide receiver Antoine Rivera for a 25-yard TD on its first offensive play of overtime, tying the game at 41-41, forcing the second overtime session.

Saint Francis (PA), as per NCAA overtime rules, then went on offense to begin the second overtime session. On the sixth play from scrimmage, Kelly again connected with Rivera, a 15-yarder this time, to put the Red Flash back on top 48-41. The onus was then on Wagner’s offense and again the Seahawks came through with Doscher diving in from three yards out to knot the score at 48-48, necessitating a third overtime session.

Wagner’s offense then went back on the field and delivered yet again. Williams accounted for all 25 yards of this possession, capping the drive with a 17-yard burst up the middle to put the Seahawks back in the lead at 54-48. As per NCAA overtime rules, a teams must go for two-points following all TDs beginning with the third overtime. Doscher took it in the two-point try himself to make it a 56-48 score.

On Saint Francis’ possession in the third overtime, the Seahawk defense stiffened. The game came down to a fourth and four at the Seahawk 19-yard line when Kelly, diving for the first down stakes on the left sideline, came up one yard short, setting off a wild Seahawk celebration.

Senior WR Lon Woods (St. Petersburg, FL/ J.P. Taravella) caught two passes for 35 yards and had a huge impact in the game on special teams, returning three kickoffs for 112 yards with a long of 53 yards. Defensively, freshman LB Carl-Olivier Prime (Quebec, CA/ Kent School) led Wagner defensively with 12 tackles, while senior DB Jorel Joseph (Fairfax, VA/ Bishop Ireton) and senior DT Joseph Harkins (Washington, DC/ St. John’s College) recorded nine and eight tackles, respectively.

Wagner blocked two punts on the afternoon as freshman Matt Heacock (Catonsville, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) also blocked a fourth quarter punt, in addition to Placide’s.

For Saint Francis (PA), Kelly wound up completing 25-of-44 passes for 301 yards and four TDs with Rivera snaring 10 of those passes for 154 yards and three TDs while Red Flash RB Jude Yearwood added 118 yards rushing on 20 carries.

NOTES – The last time Wagner had played an overtime game was on Oct. 2, 2004 when the Seahawks dropped a 30-24 overtime contest at Sacred Heart. The 56 points scored by Wagner are the most the Seahawks have scored in a game since Nov. 15, 1998 when Wagner earned a 62-44 victory at Jacksonville.

Freshman Nick Doscher became the first Wagner QB to eclipse the 100-yard rushing

mark since 1967 when gained 144 yards on the ground and

scored 3 TDs in leading Wagner past Saint Francis.
