Vipavska dolina leži na prepihu zgodovine, narodov in kultur. Skoznjo potekajo tisočletne poti med Italijo in Podonavjem. Naseljena je bila že v kameni dobi, poseben pečat pa so dolini vtisnili Rimljani, ki so med drugim vanjo zanesli naše danes največje kmetijsko bogastvo – vinsko trto.

The Vipava valley has a turbulent past and for millennia it has been a passage way between Italy and the Danube region. It was settled already in the

Stone Age, but the main legacy was left by the Romans, who

had brought its main agriculture treasure – the grape vine.

Slikovita dolina je le slabo uro vožnje oddaljena od prestolnice, številnih mednarodnih letališč, morja in visokih gora. Ime je dobila po reki Vipavi. Na severu jo obkrožajo planote Trnovski gozd, Hrušica in Nanos, na jugu pa Vipavski griči, ki prehajajo v Kras.

This picturesque valley is located less than an hour drive away from the capital of Slovenia, international airports, Adriatic Sea, and high mountains. It was named after the Vipava River and is surrounded by the high plateaus of Trnovski gozd, Hrušica and Nanos in the north and by the Vipava Hills merging with the Karst in the south.

The valley invites its visitors with mild winters, early springs and hot summers, whilst the Trnovo, Hrušica and Nanos Plateaus invite them above the valley with fresh climate in the summer and plenty of snow in the winter.

The sunny southern slopes and the Mediterranean climate are ideal for winegrowing. Ancient knowledge and modern approaches place the winegrowers of Vipava Valley among the most excellent wine producers who have been well-renowned at home and abroad for centuries. If you would like to experience the authentic and specific taste of the Vipava wines you should try local grape varieties Zelen and Pinela.

Z vipavskim sadjem, sočnim in okusnim, se lahko sladkate od prvih češenj zgodaj spomladi, do kostanja, oljk in kakija pozno jeseni, glavna sadna sezona pa je poleti, ko zorijo marelice in breskve.

Budanje so bile že davno nazaj znane po marelicah, češnjah, hruškah in grozdju. Domačini so bili podjetni in so sadje odkupovali po vsej vipavski deželi ter ga v posebnih lesenih škatlah že pred 200 leti tovorili na tržnice velikih mest (Trst, Gorica, Ljubljana, Idrija) in prebivalcev Budanj se je prijelo ime »škatlarji«.

You can enjoy in juicy and delicious fruits of the Vipava Valley, like cherries, chestnuts, olives, and kakis, all from early spring to late autumn, but the main fruit season comes in summer with the ripening apricots and peaches.

The village of Budanje has been well-known for its apricots, cherries, pears, and grapes since the ancient times. The local population was very enterprising and already 200 years ago used to purchase the fruits from all over the valley and later on sold it in wooden boxes on markets of larger cities (Trieste, Gorizia, Ljubljana, and Idrija). Such form of trade also gave name to the villagers of Budanje who are still referred to as “škatlarji” (Box people).

Na Vipavskem so gojili vinsko trto že v rimskih časih. O tukajšnjih vinih in vinogradih je pisal že Janez Vajkard Valvasor v Slavi vojvodine Kranjske (1689). Na Vipavskem je leta 1844 nastala Vinoreja, prva slovenska knjiga o vinogradništvu, pred stodvajsetimi leti pa je bila tu ustanovljena prva vinarska zadruga na Kranjskem.

Grape vines have been grown in the Vipava Valley since the Roman times. Local wines and vineyards were already described by Janez Vajkard Valvasor in his book Slava vojvodine Kranjske (1689). In 1844, Vinoreja, the famous first Slovenian

book on winegrowing was published in the Vipava Valley, whilst 120

years ago the valley witnessed the foundation of the first

winegrowing co-operative in the Carniola region.

Gradovi, dvorci, številne cerkve, gručastevasi,ozkeulice -gaseinznačilno grajene vipavske kamnite hiše pričajo o razgibanem življenjskem utripu v prejšnjih obdobjih.

Castles, manors, numerous churches, clustered villages, narrow streets and distinctively constructed stone houses of the Vipava Valley represent silent witnesses of the dynamic life of previous times.

Ob Mrzli reki je 5. in 6. septembra leta 394 potekal eden največjih antičnih spopadov, znamenita bitka pri Frigidu. Njen izid je odločila vipavska burja, ki je Teodozijevim vojščakom podeseterila moč puščic, Evgenijevim vojakom pa trgala ščite iz rok, puščice in kopja pa obračala v lastne vrste.

Vipavski Križ je bil nekoč sodno, upravno in kulturno središče doline. Že leta 1532

je dobil mestne pravice. Ob grajskem obzidju je Kapucinski samostan z bogato knjižnico

in meniško celico njegovega najbolj znanega meniha, pridigarja Janeza Svetokriškega.

Vipavski Križ is a former judicial, administrative and cultural centre of the

valley which acquired town privileges as early as 1532. Located at the castle walls is the Capuchin convent with a rich library

and the friar’s cell of the most famous monk, the preacher Janez Svetokriški.

Vipavska dolina je bila od nekdaj navdih mnogim umetnikom, tudi Venu Pilonu. Njegovo bogato umetniško zapuščino hrani Pilonova galerija Ajdovščina. Dolina je tudi zibelka slovenske himne. Prešernovo Zdravljico, ki je nastala na pobudo vipavskega rojaka Matije Vertovca, je uglasbil Stanko Premrl, rojen v Podnanosu. Danes v dolini delujeje mnogo ustvarjalcev, Ajdovščina pa je močno središče alternativnih kultur in cilj številnih mladih glasbenikov.

Čez Hrušico je vodila pomembna rimska cestna povezava med Apeninskim polotokom in Podonavjem. Tu je bila

sprva poštna postaja, kasneje pa so na Hrušici zgradili

utrdbo, kjer je danes urejen arheološki park Ad Pirum.

The Vipava Valley has always been an inspiration to many artists, including Veno Pilon whose rich artistic legacy has been preserved in the Pilon Gallery in Ajdovščina. The valley is also the cradle of the Slovenian national anthem. The choral composition for the poem Zdravljica was composed by Stanko Premrl, born in the village of Podnanos. Today, there are numerous artists active in the Vipava Valley, Ajdovščina is an important centre for alternative cultures and a destination for many young musicians.

An important Roman road link between the Apennine Peninsula and the Danubian region used to lead across Hrušica. At first, Hrušica included a postal station, but later witnessed the construction of a fortification which now homes the archaeological park Ad Pirum.

On the 5th and 6th September in 394, one of the greatest battles of the antiquity took place next to the Cold river – the famous Battle of the Frigidus. Its outcome was decided by the Vipava bora wind which increased the strength of arrows by Theodosius’ soldiers by tenfold and snatched the shields out of the hands of Eugenius’ soldiers and redirected their arrows and spears straight back to them.

One of the wine-growing hills in the vicinity of Vipava includes a well preserved hunting manor Zemono from the 17th century which today represents a popular wedding place and a destination frequently visited by fans of good food.

Najstarejše vasi na Vipavskem so naslonjene na strmo in naravno zavarovano pobočje Čavna, ki je v veselje današnjega pohodnika prepredeno s starodavnimi potmi.

The oldest villages of the Vipava Valley lean on the steep and naturally protected slope of Mt. Čaven which is, at the great delight of present hikers, crisscrossed with ancient roads.

Ajdovščina je gospodarsko in kulturno središče Vipavske doline. Današnje stavbe v središču mesta so zgrajene na temeljih rimske Castre. Utrjeni vojaški tabor, ki je bil

vključen v obrambni sistem vzhodnih

meja rimskega cesarstva, so začeli graditi okoli leta 270.

Arheološke najdbe iz rimskega obdobja so shranjene v Muzeju Ajdovščina, ki na ogledponujatudiobsežnozbirkofosilov.

Ajdovščina represents the economic and cultural centre of the Vipava Valley. Present buildings in the centre of the city are built on the foundations of the Roman Castra. The construction of the fortified military camp, which represented a part of the defence system of eastern Roman Empire borders, began around 270. The archaeological findings of this period are preserved in the Ajdovščina Museum which also houses a large fossil collection exhibition.

Vipava je kraj izvirov istoimenske reke, ki si z deltastim izvirom utira pot na več kot desetih mestih in potem vijugasto teče po dolini. Zaradi prepredenosti z brvmi in mostovi ter čudovitih izvirov reke Vipave, ki se razprostirajo za mogočnim dvorcem Lanthieri, pravijo kraju tudi »slovenske Benetke«.

Na vinorodnem griču blizu Vipave je že od daleč viden lepo obnovljen renesančni lovski dvorec Zemono iz 17. stol. Danes je dvorec pogost cilj številnih dobrojedcev in priljubljen kraj za poroke.

Goče se ponašajo z izjemno kamnoseško in stavbarsko dediščino – več kot 60 »velbanih hramov«.

Vipava is a place of numerous springs of the river with the same name. Because Vipava is crisscrossed with footbridges, bridges, and the wonderful deltoid spring of the Vipava River, spreading out behind the magnificent Lanthieri Manor, the place is also referred to as the “Slovene Venice”.

Tudi reka Hubelj je, poleg Vipave, odigrala pomembno vlogo v zgodovini. Voda, ki se zbira v notranjosti gore, privre na dan iz številnih lukenj kraškega podzemlja, izvir je še posebej veličasten po obilnem deževju. Konec 3. stoletja so ob tej Mrzli reki, kot so jo poimenovali Rimljani, zgradili utrdbo Castra. Ob Hublju so že v 16. in 17.stoletjudelovalefužineinkovačijezaželezo, nato pa je moč tega nikoli presahlega hudournika izkoriščalo še mnogo drugih obrtnih delavnic. Hubelj je bil tudi meja med Goriško in Kranjsko deželo.

Besides the Vipava River, the Hubelj River also played an important role throughout the history. The water accumulating in the mountain interior bursts to the surface from numerous holes of the Karst subterranean world and forms a mighty spring which is especially magnificent after heavy rain downpour. At the end of the 3rd century, the Romans built the Castra

fortification next to this Cold river. As early as in the 16th and 17th

century, many ironworks and iron forges operated by the

Hubelj. Later on, other crafts workshops also took advantage of this powerful, never dried-up torrent. In previous times, the Hubelj

River also represented the border between the Gorizia

and Carniola regions.

Karnekajfosilov,pričnekdanjegaživljenja,je bilo prvič odkritih prav v teh krajih in imenovanih po njih. Tudi rožo hladnikovko (Hladnikiapastinacifolia)najdetesamov Trnovskem gozdu in nikjer drugje na svetu.

Many fossils, witnesses of the ancient life, were first discovered in these places and were named after them. The same goes for the Hladnikia flower (Hladnikia pastinacifolia) which can only be found in the Trnovo Forest and nowhere else.

čudes je Otliško okno na robu Gore. Skozi »votlo steno«

se odpira nenavaden pogled na dolino. Po ljudskem izročilu ga je naredil sam hudič. Na Trnovski

planoti in Nanosu buri domišljijo jamski svet brezen

in ledenic.

Nature has created numerous beautiful phenomena in this

small piece of land. One of the wonders is the natural “Otliško

okno” (Otlica window) located on the edge of the Gora Plateau.

The view towards the Vipava Valley through its “hollow wall”

is truly exceptional. The folk tradition says that this window

was formed by the devil himself. On the Trnovo and Nanos

Plateaus, the imagination gets excited by the hidden world of

abysses and ice caves.

Vipavska dolina se je tudi kulinarično razvijala na prepihu. Kuhinja v teh krajih je sezonska, preprosta, a okusna in raznovrstna. Še vedno so žive vipavske jedi pripravljene po receptih naših non. Tradicionalne jedi, pogosto s pridihom sodobnosti, ponosno ponuja večina tukajšnjih restavracij in gostiln, tudi najbolj uglednih.

The Vipava cuisine also developed quite turbulently. It is seasonal and simple yet delicious and diverse and includes old Vipava dishes prepared according to the recipes of our grandmas. Traditional dishes, often prepared with a modern touch, are proudly offered in the majority of local restaurants and inns, including the most renowned.

Zimski in pomladni čas ponujata obisk osmic, ko lahko vinarji, še po stari pravici iz časov Marije Terezije, osem dni prodajajo viške vina pretekle letine in ostale domače dobrote.

In winter and spring you can visit “osmice” (eight day country feasts) where winemakers are allowed to sell the surplus of their last year’s wine and other home-made delicacies. Such rights were given to winemakers already by the Austro-Hungarian ruler Maria Theresa.

Vipavske kuhinje ni brez jote (mineštra iz zelja ali repe, kisane na grozdnih tropinah, fižola in po možnosti kosa svinjine) in štrukljev iz kvašenega testa, polnjenih z orehi in rozinami ali s skuto in zelišči. Posebnost je polenta, prelita s »šelinko« (mineštra iz zelene).• Ob kozarcuvipavskegavinane smejo manjkati tukajšnji siri in okusni suhomesnati izdelki, zoreni na vipavski burji.

There would be no Vipava cuisine without “jota” (minestrone made from cabbage or turnip acidified on grapeskins, beans and, if possible, a piece of pork) and “štruklji” (dumplings) made with yeast-raised dough filled with walnuts and raisins or with curd and herbs. The special dish of the Vipava cuisine is polenta with “šelinka” (celery

soup). • A glass of the Vipava wine must not go without local

cheese or dried meat products matured in the Vipava bora wind.

Vse leto se lahko podajate na urejene pohodne poti, ki vodijo med vinogradi, sadovnjaki, polji in travniki, vzdržljivejši pa se lahko podate v objem Čavna, Golakov in Nanosa. Skorajda vse poti spremljajo čudoviti razgledi, ob lepem vremenu se s 1000 metrov visokega Sinjega vrha na robu Trnovske planote odpre razgled do morja.

Vipavska dolina ponuja tudi dobre možnosti za kolesarjenje, saj teren omogoča lažje in težjekolesarskepodvige -sstrmimivzponiin spusti. V Športnem parku Pale je na voljoprogaza4-kros,kiomogočatreningeskozi celo leto.

The Vipava Valley also offers excellent cycling opportunities, as the terrain allows easier and more difficult cycling ventures – with steep ascends and descends. The Pale Sports Park also offers a 4-cross track allowing practice throughout the year.

Throughout the year, the valley offers well-maintained hiking trails routed through the vineyards, orchards, fields and meadows, whilst Mt. Čaven, Mt. Golaki, or Mt. Nanos are reserved for more experienced hikers. Almost all trails are accompanied with splendid views. In good weather conditions, even the Adriatic Sea can be seen from the 1000 m high Sinji vrh located at the edge of the Trnovo Plateau.
