the instructions handy for futurereference. To ensure successfulrecordings, we recommend that youtest the record function and volumebefore use.• The contents of this document

as alcohol and lacquer thinner toclean the unit.

Warning regarding data loss:• Recorded content in memory may

be destroyed or erased by operatingmistakes, unit malfunction, orduring repair work.

• For important recorded content, werecommend you to make a note of itbefore formatting the recorder.

Handling the recorder

f Warning:

• Do not use the recorder nearflammable or explosive gases.

• Keep young children and infantsaway from the recorder.

Always use and store the recorderout of the reach of young childrenand infants to prevent the followingdangerous situations, which couldcause serious injury:1 Becoming entangled in

the recorder strap, causingstrangulation.

2 Accidentally swallowing the

battery, cards or other smallparts.3 Accidentally being injured by the

moving parts of the recorder.• Do not use or store the recorder in

dusty or humid places.• Do not disassemble, repair or

modify the unit yourself.• Do not operate the unit while

operating a vehicle (such as a

bicycle, motorcycle, or car).

Caution for usage environment

• To protect the high-precisiontechnology contained in thisproduct, never leave the recorder

in the places listed below, nomatter if in use or storage:• Places where temperatures

and/or humidity are high or gothrough extreme changes. Directsunlight, beaches, locked cars, ornear other heat sources (stove,radiator, etc.) or humidifiers.

• In sandy or dusty environments.

• Near flammable items orexplosives.• In wet places, such as bathrooms

or in the rain. When usingproducts with weatherproofdesigns, read their manuals aswell.

• In places prone to strongvibrations.

• Never drop the recorder or

subject it to severe shocks orvibrations.

• The recorder may malfunctionif it is used in a location whereit is subject to a magnetic/electromagnetic field, radiowaves, or high voltage, suchas near a TV set, microwave,video game, loud speakers,

large monitor unit, TV/radiotower, or transmission towers.In such cases, turn the recorderoff and on again before furtheroperation.

f Caution:

• Stop using the recorderimmediately if you notice anyunusual odors, noise, or smokearound it. Never remove the batteries withbare hands, which may cause a fire

or burn your hands.• Be careful with the strap.

Be careful with the strap when youcarry the recorder. It could easilycatch on stray objects and causeserious damage.

• Handle the recorder with care toavoid getting a low-temperatureburn.

• When the recorder contains metalparts, overheating can resultin a low-temperature burn. Payattention to the following:

• When used for a long period, therecorder will get hot. If you holdon to the recorder in this state,a low-temperature burn may becaused.

• In places subject to extremely

cold temperatures, thetemperature of the recorder’sbody may be lower than theenvironmental temperature.If possible, wear gloves whenhandling the recorder in coldtemperatures.

Battery handling precautions

Follow these important guidelinesto prevent batteries from leaking,overheating, burning, exploding, orcausing electrical shocks or burns.

f Danger:

• Batteries should never beexposed to flame, heated, short-circuited or disassembled.

• Never heat or incinerate batteries.• Take precautions when carrying

or storing batteries to preventthem from coming into contactwith any metal objects such as

jewelry, pins, fasteners, etc.• Never store batteries where

they will be exposed to directsunlight, or subjected to hightemperatures in a hot vehicle,

near a heat source, etc.

• To prevent causing battery leaksor damaging their terminals,carefully follow all instructionsregarding the use of batteries.Never attempt to disassemble abattery or modify it in any way,solder, etc.

• If a battery fluid gets into youreyes, flush your eyes immediatelywith clear, cold running waterand seek medical attentionimmediately.

f Warning:

• Keep batteries dry at all times.• Do not use a battery if it is

cracked or broken.• Never subject batteries to strong

shocks or continuous vibration.• If a battery leaks, becomes

discolored or deformed, orbecomes abnormal in any otherway during operation, stop usingthe recorder.

• If a battery leaks fluid onto yourclothing or skin, remove the

clothing and flush the affectedarea with clean, running coldwater immediately. If the fluidburns your skin, seek medicalattention immediately.

• Keep battery out of the reach ofchildren.

• If you notice anything unusualwhen using this product such as

abnormal noise, heat, smoke, or aburning odor:1 remove the battery immediately

while being careful not to burnyourself, and;

2 call your dealer or local Olympusrepresentative for service.

• Please recycle batteries to help

save our planet’s resources. Whenyou throw away dead batteries,be sure to cover their terminalsand always observe local laws andregulations.

Inserting batteries

Strap hole (Strap is not supplied.)

When [ ] appears on the display,replace the batteries as soon aspossible. When the batteries aretoo weak, [ ], [LO] and [bATT]appears on the display and therecorder shuts down.

• Remove the batteries if you are not

going to use the recorder for anextended period of time.

Turning on the powerSlide the POWER switch to the [ON]position.

OFF

Turning off the power:While the recorder is in stop mode,slide the POWER switch to the [OFF/HOLD] position.

Power save mode:If the recorder is on and stops for 5

minutes or longer, the display shutsoff and it goes into power save mode. To exit power save mode, press anybutton.

HOLD:If you slide the POWER switch to the[OFF/HOLD] position, the currentconditions will be preserved, and allbuttons will be disabled.

Setting time and date[dATE]If you set the time and datebeforehand, the information will bestored automatically when the fileis recorded. This function enableseasier file management.

" When you install batteries forthe first time or each time youreplace the batteries, the “hour”indicator will flash. When the“hour” is flashing, conduct thesetup from step 4.

1 While the recorder is during

stop mode, press and hold theDISP/MENU button.

2 Press the + or − button to select[dATE].

3 Press the`OK button.• The “hour” will flash on the

display.

4 Press the + or − button to change

the setting.5 Press the`OK or9 button to

set.• Repeat step 4 and 5 to set

“minute”, “year”, “month” and“day”. After the “day” has beenset, the recorder’s clock will startworking.

• You can select between 12 and

24 hours display by pressingthe DISP/MENU button whilesetting the hour and minute.

• You can select the order of the“month”, “day” and “year” bypressing the DISP/MENU buttonwhile setting them.

6 Press the STOP (4) button to closethe menu screen.

Recording The recorder provides four folders,[&], ['], [(] and [)]. To changethe folder selection, press theFOLDER/INDEX button while therecorder is stopped. These four folderscan be selectively used to distinguishthe kind of recording; for example,

Folder [&] might be used to storeprivate information, while Folder [']might be dedicated to store businessinformation.

1 Press the FOLDER/INDEX buttonto select the desired folder.• Newly recorded audio will

be saved as the last file in theselected folder.

2 Press theREC (s) button to startrecording.

• The recording indicator light willturn on.

• Turn the microphone in thedirection of the source to berecorded.

3 Press the STOP (4) button to stoprecording.

Pause:If the recorder is in recording modeand the REC (s) button is pressed,recording pauses. If the REC (s)button is pressed again, recordingresumes.

• To ensure recording from the

beginning, start recording after yousee the display and the recordingindicator light turning on.

• If the number of files inside therecording folder reached 200 orthe memory becomes full, you willnot be able to record any further,and [FULL] will be displayed.Select another folder or delete anyunnecessary file before recording.

• When the remaining recordingtime is less than 60 seconds, therecording indicator light startsflashing. When the recording timeis decreasing to 30 or 10 seconds,the light flashes faster.

Recording from external micr ophonesor other devices:External microphones and other

devices can be connected and thesound can be recorded. Microphonessupported by plug-in power can alsobe used.

• Do not plug and unplug devicesinto the recorder’s jack while it isrecording.

• The built-in microphone willbecome inoperable when anexternal microphone is pluggedinto the recorder’s MIC jack.

Playback

1 Select the file to be played from thefolder.• Press the FOLDER/INDEX

button to select the folder, andthe9 or0 button to selectthe file.

2 Press the`OK button to startplayback.

3 Press the+ or− button to adjust toa comfortable listening volume.• The volume can be adjusted

within a range from [00] to [30].

4 Press the STOP (4) button at anypoint to stop playback.

Playback through earphone:An earphone can be connectedto the EAR jack of the recorder forlistening.

• To avoid ear irritation, insert the

earphone after turning down thevolume level. When you listen withthe earphone during playback, donot raise the volume too much.It may cause hearing impairmentand a decrease in hearing ability.

Forwarding and rewinding:

While the recorder is during playbackmode, press and hold the9 or

0 button.• When you release the buttonthe recorder will resume normalplayback.

• If there is an index mark in themiddle of the file, the recorder willstop once at that position.

Locating the beginning of a file:While the recorder is during stop

mode or playback mode, press the9 button.• The recorder skips to the

beginning of the next file.

While the recorder is during playbackmode, press the0 button.• The recorder skips to the

beginning of the current file.

While the recorder is during stop

mode, press the0 button.• The recorder skips to the

beginning of the previous file. Ifthe recorder is in the middle of afile, it will return to the beginningof the file.

While the recorder is during playbackmode, press the0 button twice.• The recorder skips to the

beginning of the previous file."

• During playback, skipping to thebeginning of a file that contains anindex mark will make the playbackstart from the closest index markposition.

• When you try to skip to thebeginning of the file duringplayback, setting the [SKIP]to [ON] will make the recorderforward skip 10 seconds or reverseskip 3 seconds.

Changing the playback speed

1 Press the`OK button to startplayback.

2 Press the`OK button again to openthe playback speed adjustment

display.3 Press the+ or− button to adjustthe playback speed.[1.0 PLAy]: Playback at normalspeed.

[0.5 PLAy] – [0.9 PLAy]: Playbackspeed slows down.

[1.1 PLAy] – [2.0 PLAy]: Playbackspeed becomes faster.

4 Press the`OK button to completethe setting.• If you leave the recorder for

3 seconds, the setting will beapplied and the recorder willreturn back to the original screen.

• Even if playback is stopped, thechanged playback speed will beretained. The next playback will beat that speed.

• If you set the noise cancel functionto [ON], you will not be able tochange the playback speed.

How to begin segment repeatplayback: (For VN-7200 only)

1 Press the`OK button to startplayback.

2 Press theREC (s) button at thepoint you want to start segmentrepeat playback.• [A] will flash on the display.

• Reaching the end of a file while[A] is still flashing will makethat point the end position, andmake repeat playback start.

3 Press theREC (s) button again atthe position where you want to endsegment repeat playback.• [A-b] will appear on the display.

• The recorder repeatedly playsback the segment until thesegment repeat playback is

canceled.• As in normal playback mode,

playback speed can be changedduring segment repeat playbackas well.

Cancel the segment repeat playbackfunction:

To cancel the segment repeatplayback, press either STOP (4),REC (s),9, or the0 button.

• If you press and hold0

andrewind past the start position,or press and hold9 and fastforward past the end position, thesegment repeat playback will becanceled.

Erasing

1 Select the file you want to erase.

2 While the recorder is during stopmode, press the ERASE button.• File number and [NO] will flash

on the display.

3 Press the0 button to select[y ES].

4 Press the`OK button.• Erasing begins and [ERASE]

flashes on the display.Erasing all files in a folder:

1 Select the folder you want to erase.

2 While the recorder is during stopmode, press the ERASE button.

3 Press the ERASE button again.• [ALL] and [NO] will flash on the

display.

4 Press the0 button to select[y ES].

5 Press the`OK button.• Erasing begins and [ERASE]

flashes on the display."

• Locked files cannot be erased.• If an action is not selected within 8

seconds, the recorder will return tostop mode.• It may take over 10 seconds to

complete processing. Neverremove batteries during this timebecause data may be corrupted.In addition, carefully check theremaining battery level in order toensure that the battery will not runout while processing.

• You cannot delete folders with thisrecorder.

Setting an index mark

1 While the recorder is duringrecording mode or playback mode,press the FOLDER/INDEX button.

Index number

• Even after an index mark isplaced, recording or playbackwill continue so you can placeindex marks in other locations ina similar manner.

Clearing an index mark:While the index number appearsfor approximately 2 seconds on thedisplay, press the ERASE button.• Erasing an index mark will make

the index number after it move upautomatically.

• Up to 16 index marks can be setin a file. If you try to place morethan 16 index marks, the [FULL]message will be displayed.

• Index marks cannot be set orerased in a locked file.

LCD display information

While the recorder is during stop

mode, pressing and holding theSTOP (4) button will make thedisplay switch information in thefollowing order:• Current date Current time

While the recorder is during recordingmode, pressing the DISP/MENU

button will make the display switchinformation in the following order:• Elapsed recording time

Menu setting method

You can set each menu item as follows.

1 While the recorder is duringstop mode, press and hold theDISP/MENU button.

2 Press the + or − button to move tothe item you want to set.

3 Press the9 or0 button tochange the setting.

4 Press the`OK or + / − button toset.

5 Press the STOP (4) button to close

the menu screen.• The setting menu icons on thedisplay will turn on.

it idle for 3 minutes during a menusetup operation, when a selecteditem is not applied.

Microphone sensitivity [MIC][HI]: High recording sensitivitysuitable to record conferences andlessons.

[LO]: Standard recording sensitivitysuitable for dictation.

"• When you would like to clearly

record a speaker’s voice, set [MIC ]to [LO] and hold recorder’s built-inmicrophone close to the speaker’smouth (5-10 cm).

Variable Control VoiceActuator [VCVA]

When the microphone sensesthat sounds have reached apreset threshold volume level,the built-in Variable Control VoiceActuator (VCVA) starts recordingautomatically, and stops when thevolume drops below the thresholdlevel. The VCVA feature extendsrecording time and conserves

memory by stopping recordingduring silent periods, which helpsthe playback to be more efficient.

[ON]: Enables the VCVA function.

[OFF]: Disables this function.

Adjust the start/stop actuation level:If the surrounding noise is loud,the starting sensitivity of the VCVAcan be adjusted according to therecording situation.

1 Press theREC (s) button to startrecording.• When the sound volume is lower

than the preset threshold soundlevel, recording automatically stopsafter approximately 2 seconds, and[STANd-By] flashes on the display.

The recording indicator light turnswhen recording starts and flasheswhen recording pauses.

2 Press the + or − button to adjustthe start/stop actuation level.• The VCVA level can be set to 15

different values.

• The higher the value, the moresensitive the recorder will be to

sounds. At the highest value,even the faintest sound willactivate recording.

Noise cancel [NOISE-C]If the recorded audio is difficultto understand because of noisysurroundings, adjust the noise cancelsetting level.

[ON]: Noise will be reduced during

file playback to achieve a bettersound quality.

[OFF]: Disables this function.

Continuous playback[ALL PLAy] (For VN-7200 only)[ON]: Plays file continuously in thecurrent folder until the last file andthen stops.

[OFF]: Plays file stops after playingback the current file.

Repeat playback [REPEAT](For VN-7200 only)[ON]: Plays the current file repeatedly.

[OFF]: Disables this function.

Skip space [SKIP](For VN-7200 only) This function is convenient forquickly skipping to another playbackposition or to repeat the playback ofshort phrases.

[ON]: While the recorder is duringplayback, pressing9 will make

the recorder forward skip 10 seconds,while pressing0 will make itreverse skip 3 seconds.

[OFF]: The recorder will forward skipor reverse skip a file.

"

• If there is an index mark or a cuecloser than the skip space, therecorder will forward skip/reverse

skip to that position.Alarm playback [ALARM]You can use the alarm playbackfunction to sound the alarm tonefor 5 minutes at the scheduled time.Within these 5 minutes, pressing anybutton other than the POWER switchwill make the recorder playbackthe preselected file. With the alarmplayback function, only one file canbe played back. Select a file for thefunction before setting the time.

• The start/stop actuation level alsovaries according to the selectedmicrophone sensitivity mode.

• If the starting level is not adjustedwithin 2 seconds, the display willreturn to the previous one.

• To ensure successful recordings,prior testing and adjustment ofthe start/stop actuation level isrecommended.

Timer recording [TIMER][ON]: Enables the timer recording.

[OFF]: Disables this function.

1 Select [ON] and press the`OK

button.• The “hour” will flash on the

display.

2 Press the + or − button to changethe setting.

3 Press the`OK or9 button toset.• Repeat steps 2 and 3 to set the

starting “minute” and the ending“hour” and “minute”.

4 Press the + or − button to selectbetween [ONCE] and [DAILy ].[ONCE]: Records only once at thespecified time.

[DAILy]: Records every day at thespecified time.

5 Press the`OK or9 button toset."

• With this function, you can set onlythe starting and the ending timeof recording. For the recordingmode, the microphone sensitivity,VCVA and folders settings, thesettings selected before the timer

recording will be applied.• If you set a timer recording thatcould exceed the remainingtime capacity, [FULL] will flashfor 2 seconds. The setting willbe applied but the recordingwill be interrupted. Delete anyunnecessary file.

• If the batteries run out whilerecording based on the timer

setting, the recorder will stoprecording. Check the batterypower before starting the timerrecording.

“minute”.

4 Press the + or − button to select

between [ONCE] and [DAILy ].[ONCE]: Alarm playback willbe performed only once at thespecified time.

[DAILy]: Alarm playback will beperformed at the specified timeevery day.

5 Press the`OK or9 button toset."

• The alarm tone stops automaticallyif no button is pressed within 5minutes after the alarm starts. Thefile is not played back in this case.

• If the starting times for timerrecording and alarm playbackare set for the same time, timerrecording will have priority.

LED [LED][ON]: LED light will be set.

[OFF]: LED light will be canceled.

System sounds [BEEP] The recorder beeps to alert you ofbutton operations or warn you oferrors.

[ON]: Enables the beep function.

[OFF]: Disables this function.

• If the alarm playback function hasbeen set, the alarm will sound atthe scheduled time even if thesystem sounds are disabled.

File lock [LOCK]Locking a file keeps important datafrom being accidentally erased.Select a file for the function beforelocking.

[ON]: Locks the file and prevents it

from being erased.[OFF]: Unlocks the file and allows itto be erased.

Dividing files [DIVIdE](For VN-7200 only)Files with large capacities and longrecording times can be divided tomake them easier to be managed.Stop the file at the position in whichyou want to divide it and apply thesetting.

[yES]: Enables the file division.

[NO]: Cancels this function.

1 Select [y ES] and press the`OK button.• File division begins and [DIVIdE]

flashes on the display."

• The recorder cannot divide fileswhen the number of files in thefolder reached 200.

• Locked files cannot be divided.• Do not remove the battery while

dividing a file. This may damagethe data.

File move [MOVE]You can move files recorded infolders [&], ['], [(] and [)] to otherfolders. The moved file is added tothe end of the destination folder.Select a file for the function beforemoving.

[yES]: Enables the file movement.

[NO]: Cancels this function.1 Select [y ES] and press the`OK

button.• Current folder and file number

will flash on the display.

2 Press the9 or0 button toselect a destination folder.

3 Press the`OK button.• The destination folder and the

number of the moved file appearon the display, and moving iscompleted.

• If the destination folder is full(200 files), [FULL] appears on thedisplay, and you cannot move thefile to that folder.

• A file cannot be moved to the samefolder.

• Do not remove the batteriesduring moving. This may damagethe data.

Formatting the recorder[FORMAT]If you format the recorder, all fileswill be removed and all functionsettings will return to defaults except

date and time settings. For importantrecorded content, we recommendyou to make a note of it beforeformatting the recorder.

[yES]: Starts formatting the recorder.

[NO]: Cancels this function.

1 Select [y ES] and press the`OK button.

• [NO] will flash on the display.2 Select [y ES] again and press the`OK button.• Formatting begins and

[FORMAT] flashes on the display.

• [END] appears when formattingends.

• It may take over 10 seconds to

complete processing. Neverremove batteries during this timebecause data may be corrupted. Inaddition, replace the batteries withnew ones in order to ensure thatthe batteries will not run out whileprocessing.
