techniques such as valve, on-column, and direct injection. High flow rates are possible, allowing fast analysis and low elution temperatures.
EZ-Guard™ Columns Page 222
The Varian EZ-Guard column combines a FactorFour column with a built-in Varian guard column (retention gap). There’s no coupling so no leaks! The EZ-Guard columns also have a unique uncoated section at the column outlet, which acts as an integrated transferline. When used with any type of detector, a shorter stabilization time will be obtained.
Varian’s Application Specific Columns: Select™ Columns
Varian Select Silanes Page 249
The Varian Select Silanes fused silica capillary column is a stabilized trifluoropropyl-methyl polysiloxane phase optimized for silanes determination. The thick film of the Varian Select Silane results in a high capacity and retention for highly volatile silanes, which also enables you to perform composition as well as impurity analysis down to ppm levels.
Varian Select Al2O3 MAPD Page 248
The Varian Select Al2O3 MAPD is an aluminum PLOT column optimized for Methyl Acetylene and Propadiene (MAPD). Response for unsurpassed analysis of trace reactive hydrocarbons in the C1-C10 range.
Varian Custom GC ColumnsVarian offers a wide range of stationary phases in several dimensions. Sometimes, however, you need to use a column that has nonstandard dimensions, tests, or other special criteria. Because Varian performs the entire production process in-house, we can address almost any requirement and supply almost any special column you request.
For instance, some of the custom columns that Varian can deliver include:• Columns in a variety of lengths and film thicknesses• EZ-Guard columns• Columns with a retention gap or transfer line tested for leaks• Analytical columns coupled and tested for leaks• Columns custom tested with a specific test mixture and test conditions
Don’t let a special requirement prevent you from following up a line of critical research. Please contact your local Varian sales office with any questions regarding custom-made columns and price quotations.
Columns on a Varian 5-in. Cage
Most GC columns are also available on a 5-in. cage. The 5-in. cage can be attached to Varian’s standard 7-in. cage with EZ-GRIP. This lets you easily and conveniently install together one 7-in. and one 5-in. column with EZ-GRIP, saving valuable oven space. The Varian 5-in. cage will also fit the HP6850 GCs.
Varian capillary columns on 5-in. cages can be ordered via standard part numbers by adding the suffix “i5” to the end of the regular 7-in. part number. For example, the 5-in. version of CP8944 will be CP8944i5. The price of the column on a 5-in. cage is the same as the price for the same column on a standard 7-in. cage.
Note: Our columns on 7-in. cages are delivered with EZ-GRIP, but our columns on the smaller 5-in. cages are not.

GC Column Specifications
Optimized Performance Through Controlled and Tight Specifications
Varian GC columns are produced following exacting ISO 9001 certified procedures. This process guarantees that all Varian GC columns are manufactured using a systematic and controlled process. Varian draws its own fused silica tubing in order to control quality. In addition, Varian synthesizes the stationary phases that we use for our capillary columns, which enables us to produce capillary columns to the tightest specifications.
Optimal Separation
The efficiency of a column, N/M (theoretical plates per meter), is a measure of a column’s separation power. Columns with higher plate numbers per meter have a high separation power. This means they provide greater resolution of two peaks.
Guaranteed Column-to-Column Reproducibility
The retention Index, RI, is the measure of column selectivity, and indicates the elution order of compounds. Columns with a small RI variation between them will produce the same elution order. By setting tight specifications on the retention index, we make sure the column-to-column reproducibility is as high as possible, giving you the guarantee that your Varian column works exactly the same way each and every time.
Reproducible Retention Times
The phase ratio, Beta, is a measure of the component’s retention time, and depends on the phase film thickness. Columns with a small variation in Beta will have a high column-to-column retention time reproducibility. Varian columns are manufactured to ensure high column-to-column retention time reproducibility.
Low Bleed Provides Increased Sensitivity
Column bleed is the formation of volatile products caused by the degradation of the stationary phase. Column bleed, measured in pA, causes baseline shifts and high noise levels that reduce peak measurement accuracy and precision. Bleed is minimized on Varian columns, as we draw our own fused silica tubing and use in-house manufactured stationary phases. Low bleed delivers reduced noise level and increased sensitivity. In addition, low bleed columns have a longer column life, and reduce the contamination of detection devices, which means detectors require less maintenance with Varian columns.
More Accurate Peak Identification
The inertness of a column, measured by peak asymmetry, As, directly influences the elution and recovery of polar (active) compounds. The closer the As value is to 1.0, the more symmetrical the peak shape (less tailing), and therefore the more accurately the peak can be quantified, particularly with acid-base compounds. Inert columns deliver far more reliable results, and Varian columns deliver those results.
Operating Temperature Ranges for Varian GC Columns
Varian specifies the maximum and minimum operating temperatures for each Varian GC column. The Maximum Allowable Operating Temperature of a stationary phase, (MAOT), is the maximum recommended temperature at which it can be operated without a change in chromatographic characteristics. For each Varian phase and column dimension, the values are listed with the ordering information, and on the test report that is supplied with each column. For temperature-programmed analysis, the MAOT is generally 20 to 25 °C higher than that for isothermal operation.
For each Varian stationary phase and column, two maximum operating temperatures are specified. The first is the maximum isothermal operating temperature, which Varian has defined in two different ways. One is applied to FactorFour and other low bleed columns, and the other is applied to all other available stationary phases.
Maximum Isothermal Temperature for Factorfour™ and Other Low Bleed Phases:
The maximum isothermal temperature is the temperature at which the column bleed does not exceed a certain specified level.
Varian has set these bleed levels such that optimal analytical results can be obtained near the specified upper temperature limit of the column. As a result, exceeding this specified column upper temperature limit will not always mean that the liquid phase is destroyed. The column will of course exhibit higher bleed levels than specified by Varian. As rule of thumb, the bleed level doubles with every 12 °C rise in temperature. Bleed levels will return to their previous levels once the oven temperature is returned to lower settings.
Maximum Isothermal Operating Temperature for All Other Varian Stationary Phases:
The maximum isothermal temperature is the temperature at which after a period of six months continuous use the amount of phase is reduced to 50% of the original layer.
The use of higher temperatures than indicated will lead to reduced column lifetime and possible changes in elution order because of partial thermal degradation.
Maximum Temperature Programmed Operating Temperature
The other specified maximum operating temperature is the temperature programmed operating temperature. The definition for maximum programmable temperature differs only in the time span: a 50% reduction of phase in 200 hours. Usually this results in a maximum programmable temperature of 20 to 25°C higher than the maximum isothermal temperature.
Minimum Operating Temperature
The minimum operating temperature is the lowest usable temperature where the stationary phase is liquid. Operating the stationary phase below its minimum temperature will not destroy the stationary phase, but poor peak shape and resolution will result.

GC System Background
System Background and Noise GenerationHow to identify and reduce the sources of rising baselines in GC analysis
When a high background is observed, the GC column is often targeted as the cause, and a high-temperature column bakeout or column replacement is used to fix the problem. However, in gas chromatography, the background is frequently generated by a different source. In order to measure accurately at trace levels, the entire GC system needs to be optimized and background (noise) must be minimized. Background in any GC-MS system is the sum of contributions that begin with the carrier gas, tubing, injection device, and column, ending with the detector, where several sources of high background also exist. Minimizing system background provides several advantages:
• Lower detection limits and more accurate data• Reduced contamination of the detection system• Better spectra in mass spectroscopy• Faster start-up times
Impurities in Carrier Gas and Gas Lines
Any contaminant in the carrier gas will end up in the GC. The purest carrier gas can be used, but if a cylinder is changed, a gas line is opened, or an in-line filter is replaced, there will a considerable amount of air (and impurities) introduced into the gas system. To reduce this risk, it is recommended to use a filter system with an indicator, which is placed as close as possible to the GC carrier gas inlet. Our Gas Clean filters are ideal for this purpose. Extension of gas lines in the laboratory must be done with clean tubing.
Figure 1 shows the difference in bleed levels with and without a carrier gas filter when running a temperature program (50°C to 350°C, 20°C/min). When no filter is used, an extreme rise in the bleed profile is clearly visible due to moisture in the carrier gas. By using filters placed as close as possible to the GC carrier gas inlet, a normal bleed profile is achieved with the removal of all moisture in the carrier gas.
The Sample
Often, the background and ghost peaks that are assumed to be background are a result of contamination from the sample. Even with pure solvents, this background is evident. Contamination can occur in the sample when it is delivered in a vial. The vial is often sealed with a cap on a rubber/silicon seal. Unfortunately, the cap often releases softeners or siloxanes into the sample. Typically, when a sample is stored in a vial and analyzed after 4-8 weeks, many extra peaks will be observed. Solvent contact with the cap should therefore be minimized.
Injector and Septum
The majority of injection systems are based on split/splitless injection, and sample introduction is done with a syringe via a septum. The septum is probably the largest source of high background. Since the septum is made of 100% polydimethylsiloxane (the same material that is used to manufacture stationary phases), any degradation product will appear to be similar to a stationary phase bleed product. The use of round-bottom needles and high-quality septa can reduce the generation and release of septum particles. Replacing the septa and insert on a regular basis will also help.
Figure 2. These peaks show typical phthalate masses. Phthalates are used as “Softeners” in septa.
Injector Liners
Glass wool liners are excellent for increasing evaporation and ensuring reproducible injections, but can cause ghost peaks and bleed by trapping of septa particles and bleed products, or the release of deactivation of glass wool. Glass wool works fine if the effect of septa bleed and particles is reduced. Using a different insert without glass wool can provide an alternate solution.

208Contamination from the Outside
Columns can be easily contaminated during installation by transfer of skin oils or hand creams, etc. Because many moisturizers contain siloxane, the column exterior can become contaminated. This is particularly important when using MS detection, since there is no gas flow along the outside of the fused silica when installed as a transfer line in an MS system. The contaminants can drift toward the ionization chamber, contributing to long stabilization times. Cleaning the end of the fused silica with tissue and methanol before it is inserted in the transfer line is always recommended. This also shortens stabilization times with the detection system.
Oxygen and Moisture ContaminationIntroduction of air in the GC system via “leaks”
The introduction of moisture and oxygen can cause high background, tailing, and shifting of retention times. This can happen via leaks and is introduced via the gas supply, coupling, septum, and connections. Leak detection is thus important and is recommended to be done before conditioning the column by handheld leak detectors, which can locate leaks at difficult spots such as the septum.
Introduction of air in the GC system via “air exposure”
Transfer lines in MS are potential sources of background contamination. When performing column or injector maintenance, to save time the operator may leave the vacuum source on while sustaining a high temperature on the transfer line. A large volume of air (containing moisture and oxygen) can pass through the hot transfer line, causing a great deal of activation and degradation of the stationary phase in the line. The subsequent analysis can exhibit higher background and less peak abundance due to adsorption.
The Stationary Phase
Each stationary phase will start to decompose when heated at elevated temperatures. The stationary phase will form degradation. The absolute bleed level depends on the nature of the stationary phase, the temperature and the amount of phase present in the column. The formation of degradation products can be reduced by stabilization of the stationary phase, leading to lower background. The stationary phase stabilization technology and the optimization of the fused silica surface all contribute to the low bleed specifications of Varian’s FactorFour columns.
For optimal results, condition the columns 20°C above the final analysis temperature or at the maximum temperature of the column. For reducing column bleed without the risk of damage from oxygen in the carrier gas, longer conditioning times at lower temperatures may be more effective.

Varian FactorFour™ Capillary ColumnsHighly Inert Capillary Columns with the Lowest Bleed Specifications - Guaranteed
• Lower detection limits• Improved inertness• Longer column lifetime• Reduced detector contamination • Enhanced instrument performance
Varian FactorFour capillary columns have quickly become the industry standard for high performance GC and GC/MS analysis. Using optimized manufacturing technologies and a comprehensive set of QC specifications, FactorFour columns deliver the new standard for ultralow bleed column performance. The Varian FactorFour capillary column line has been expanded to become a complete, comprehensive family of stationary phases, suitable for industrial, toxicology, petrochemical, and trace environmental applications.
The Basis for FactorFour Superiority
Varian controls the entire in-house manufacturing process to supply you with FactorFour columns that have a reduced bleed specification by up to a factor of four. This bleed reduction significantly improves column performance in many ways. The process of bleed formation depends on the integrity of the fused silica capillary surface, polymer coating and conditioning technology.
First, to ensure absolute integrity, Varian draws its own capillary tubing specifically for the production of capillary columns - a rare attribute. By controlling the conditions during fused silica drawing, the surface can be optimized for deactivation and low bleed.
Second, in-house synthesis of the stationary phases has led to the development of new, proprietary technologies that reduce the fundamental breakdown processes that causes column bleed.
Third, the conditioning of FactorFour columns is done at optimized temperatures under high purity gas that’s purified using the Varian Gas Clean Filter system.
Finally, all FactorFour columns are manufactured under close supervision to exacting specifications and are rigorously tested, so you’re guaranteed that every FactorFour column meets the Varian FactorFour performance specifications.
Ultralow Bleed
All FactorFour columns deliver extremely low bleed rates. In fact, their bleed specifications are up to four times lower than competitive products (Figure 1).
The ultralow bleed achievable from FactorFour columns provide many benefits:• Accurate peak identification enables you to achieve more reliable results• Superior response for traces delivers better quantification• Enhanced detector performance increases productivity and reduces your costs• Faster stabilization ensures longer instrument uptime and increased productivity• Longer column lifetime lowers the cost per analysis (Figure 2).

Superior Inertness
Besides the ultralow bleed specifications, FactorFour columns are highly inert, thereby providing accurate peak identification and more reliable analysis. See Figure 3 for an inertness comparison of the VF-35ms and competitor “X”.
Optimal Performance with Sensitive Detectors
FactorFour ultralow background noise enables optimal performance of sensitive and selective detection systems. FactorFour applications are not limited to MS detectors. Virtually every type of detector will operate with greater stability due to the low-bleed characteristics of FactorFour columns.
EZ-Guard™
EZ-Guard columns combine a low-bleed FactorFour column with a 5 or 10m integrated guard column. The inspired design eliminates guard-to-column coupling and the possibility of leaks. Also, EZ-Guard columns feature an uncoated, deactivated outlet section that acts as an integrated transferline for faster stabilization in MS and other detection systems. See page 222 to read more about the new 100% leak-free protection of analytical FactorFour columns.
Specifications that Guarantee Quality
Varian is committed to the highest product quality specificatoins. Each column is tested and shipped with its original certificate of analysis. It’s your guarantee that every Varian GC column is of the highest quality and will work consistently each and every time.
In addition, one of the many specifications for a FactorFour column is its retention index. The retention index determines compound elution order, as measured to set specifications. The smaller the deviation of the reten-tion index, the higher the reproducibility of peak elution order. The narrow FactorFour retention index tolerance guarantee the highest column-to-column reproducibility.
EZ-GRIP™
As with all Varian capillary columns, FactorFour columns are shipped on EZ-GRIP cages for ease-of-use during installation, operation, and coupling. See EZ-Grip in use on page 193.
FactorFour™ VF-1ms• Low bleed 100% dimethylpolysiloxane phase• Guaranteed lowest bleed specification• Wide variety of applications
VF-1ms
VF-1ms columns deliver all the benefits of FactorFour technology to the analysis of a wide variety of components. The nonpolar VF-1ms phase is ideal for analyzing nonpolar components. Even better, the high quality fused silica surface and deactivation technology make the column also applicable for a wide variety of semi-polar and even polar components - providing you with an extremely flexible solution. The bleed specification is 1 pA (30m, 0.25 mm, 0.25 µm) at 325ºC — the lowest in the industry.
Typical Analyses: Alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, flavors and aromas, free fatty acids, glycols, halogenated hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons, ketones, organic acids, oxygenates, PAHs, pesticides, polymers, steroids, solvents, sulfur compounds
Similar Phases: DB-1, DB-1MS, HP-1, HP-1ms, Rtx-1, Rtx-1ms, SPB-1, Equity-1, Ultra-1, BPX-1, Solgel-1MS, 007-1, AT-1, Optima-1, ZB-1, CP-Sil 5 CB, CP-Sil 5 CB Low Bleed/MS
0.53 mm ID columns
0.53 mm ID VF-1ms columns are ideally suited for valve or on-column injection techniques. High flow rates are possible with their use, enabling fast analysis and low elution temperatures.
EZ-Guard™ Columns
The VF-1ms column is now available with a film thickness of >1.0µm. Thicker films allow a better separation of more volatile compounds. The 0.32 mm ID thick film columns have a unique uncoated section at the outlet. A shorter stabilization time will be obtained when used with any type of detector. The absence of stationary phase in the last part of the column will significantly reduce background. Therefore, the impact of water, oxygen and other polar/aggressive components that move through this part of the column at high temperature will be greatly reduced - offering improved analysis for volatile samples.
Combine FactorFour low bleed GC columns with the quality gas delivery of Varian’s Gas Clean Filter and you create the best combination for optimal GC and GC/MS performance. For more information on Varian’s Gas Clean Filters, see page 271.

FactorFour™ VF-5ms• Low bleed arylene stabilized phase equivalent to 5% phenyl, 95%
dimethylpolysiloxane• Guaranteed lowest bleed specification• Wide variety of applications
VF-5ms
VF-5ms columns deliver all the benefits of the FactorFour technology to the analysis of a wide variety of components. The bleed specification is 1 pA (30 m, 0.25 mm, 0.25 µm) at 325 ºC, the lowest in the industry.
The nonpolar VF-5ms phase has a slightly higher polarity than the VF-1ms phase, resulting in a better selectivity for aromatic compounds. VF-5ms columns are ideal for analyzing nonpolar components. Better yet, the high quality fused silica surface and deactivation makes the column also applicable for a wide variety of semipolar, and even polar components like phenols.
Typical Analyses: Alcohols, amines, aromatic hydrocarbons, bile acids, drugs, EPA methods, esters, FAME, flavors and aromas, glycerides, halogenated compounds, herbicides, hydrocarbons, organic acids, oxygenates, PAHs, PCBs, pesticides, phenols, polymers, prostaglandins, solvents, steroids, sterols, sugars, and sulfur compounds.
Similar Phases: DB-5, DB-5ms, HP-5, HP-5ms, Rtx-5, Rtx-5ms, SPB-5, Equity-5, Ultra-5, BPX-5, 007-5, AT-5, Optima-5, CP-Sil 8 CB, CP-Sil 8 CB Low Bleed/MS
0.53 mm ID Columns 0.53 mm ID VF-5ms columns are ideally suited for valve or on-column injection techniques. High flow
rates are possible with their use, enabling fast analysis and low elution temperatures.
EZ-Guard™ ColumnsVF-5ms columns are now available in the integrated EZ-Guard configuration. EZ-Guard is a combination of
a FactorFour column with an integrated guard column that eliminates column coupling, so they are 100% leak-free for easy and trouble free operation. Check page 222 to see more details on our new EZ-Guard columns.

FactorFour™ VF-23ms• Low bleed, high cyanopropyl modified phase• The only high polarity, low bleed column available • Used for the analysis of FAME, solvents, and aromatics compounds
VF-23ms
VF-23ms is the only low bleed, high polarity phase available today, delivering all the benefits of the FactorFour technology to the analysis of FAME and solvents. VF-23ms is a 100% bonded, highly polar phase, so no phase rearrangement is possible, allowing splitless injection as well as column rinsing. The bleed specification at 260ºC is 3 pA (30m, 0.25 mm, 0.25 µm). VF-23ms columns are highly efficient due to the uniform distribution of the bonded phase layer.
Typical Analyses: FAME, solvents, derivatised sugars, aromatic compounds

FactorFour™ VF-DA• Optimized column for drugs of abuse confirmation • Withstands repeated methanol injections• Specially tested• Cross-linked and bonded for easy solvent rinsing
VF-DA is a unique, guaranteed low bleed FactorFour GC column for drugs of abuse confirmation testing. The VF-DA column has high recovery for trace components and excellent resistance to direct methanol injections. Drugs of abuse are measured in a variety of matrices. In urine, most general screenings are performed using full-scan GC/MS (El). Since column bleeding can negatively influence detection limits in full scan mode, the exceptionally low bleed of VF-DA columns is critically important. As column bleed is minimized, all the benefits of low bleed are provided: reduced detection limits, improved accuracy, cleaner detector.

FactorFour™ VF-5ht• High temperature stabilized phase equivalent to 5% phenyl, 95%
dimethylpolysiloxane• Tmax 400 °C, lowest bleed phase• Excellent peak shape and fast elution times for high boiling point
compounds• Cross-linked and bonded for easy solvent rinsing
The nonpolar VF-5ht column is specifically manufactured for an extended temperature limit of 400 °C.
FactorFour technology is applied to the VF-5ht column, and a special surface treatment of the fused silica is used to decrease the influence of the fused silica on the stationary phase. As a result, an extremely low bleed and a high maximum temperature column is obtained, unmatched by products from other manufacturers.
Typical Analyses: High boiling point compounds, high molecular weight hydrocarbons, antioxidants, triglycerides

EZ-Guard™
• No column coupling means no risk of leakage• Easy and fast to install and operate• Integrated transferline allows for faster detector stabilization • Eliminates dead volume, thermal capacity, and fragility issues
NEW! Guard columns (or retention gaps) are often added to the front of the analytical column to protect against contamination, or to act as a band-focusing device for
liquid samples introduced by on-column and splitless injection techniques. For these applications, the new Varian EZ-Guard column combines a FactorFour column with a built-in guard column.
The first 5- or 10-meter section of the EZ-Guard column (guard length depends on the column you select) is not coated with stationary phase, but it has been deactivated. The lack of a column connection between the guard and analytical sections results in a 100% leak-free column. As a result, former problems with installation, peak shape and leaks just don’t occur!
Faster Stabilization
Each EZ-Guard column also features a unique uncoated and deactivated outlet section, approximately 100 cm in length, which acts as an integrated transfer line. This results in a shorter stabilization time with all types of detectors. The absence of a stationary phase in the last part of the column will significantly reduce background noise. The impact of water, oxygen or other polar or aggressive components that move through the end of the column at high temperature will also be greatly reduced.
The Varian EZ-Guard column is based on the FactorFour technology, and offers the lowest bleed specifications available. Column bleeding is minimized to deliver all the benefits of low bleed.
Operation
When resolution or response in the chromatogram diminishes, a coil is removed from the EZ-Guard column so that peak shapes will improve. By removing a coil, the column length is shortened and peaks will elute somewhat faster. For best results, check the integration time windows of your data system.

EZ-Guard columns are available with the VF-1ms, VF-5ms and VF-Xms phases. Contact your local Varian office or distributor if you want to benefit from EZ-Guard with other FactorFour phases.

Rapid-MS• Faster GC/MS analysis: A factor 3-5 for temperature programmed, and
up to a factor 10 for isothermal runs• High loadability: Film thickness from 0.1 to 1 micron• Higher sensitivity: Typically signal-to-noise ratio will increase by a
factor 3 or greater
Rapid-MS columns utilize the high optimal carrier gas velocity obtained when a separation is performed under reduced pressure to reduce analysis times. With Rapid-MS columns, GC/MS analysis time is decreased up to a factor of 10, and the sensitivity is increased at the same time. The low-bleed VF-5ms stationary phase is equivalent to 5% phenyl, 95% dimethylpolysiloxane phase. Rapid-MS requires no changes to your injector procedures or MS methods. Installation is easy: standard fittings and ferrules can be used, and no special skills are required.
Now available with the ultra-low bleed VF-5ms phase, which is equivalent to the CP-Sil 8 CB Low Bleed/MS phase, yet provides an even lower bleed level. See page 212 for more detail on the VF-5ms.
Typical components analyzed with the Rapid-MS include: PCBs and Arochlor, Pesticides (Chlorinated, Nitrogen, Phosphorous), FAME, PAH and Drugs.

CP-Sil 5 CB• 100% dimethylpolysiloxane• Guaranteed reproducibility, long lifetime• High efficiency, high inertness OV-1-type column• Available in fused silica and UltiMetal• Suitable for a wide range of applications
The CP-Sil 5 CB column contains a 100% dimethylpolysiloxane phase. Like the CP-Sil 2 CB column, separation is almost entirely based on boiling points, making this column suitable for a wide range of applications with a broad temperature range. Due to intensive cross-linking, CP-Sil 5 CB withstands large solvent injections, ensuring maximum column lifetime. For the highest maximum operating temperatures, use our UltiMetal columns.
See page 210 for our premium low-bleed 100% dimethylpolysiloxane FactorFour VF-1ms phase. Varian’s FactorFour columns have quickly become the industry standard for high performance GC analysis. The ultra-low bleed columns deliver superiour response for routine trace analysis, lower detection limits, and longer lifetime. Selectivity of the FactorFour phases can be slightly different from the standard CP-Sil polysiloxane phases.

CP-Sil 8 CB• 5% phenyl, 95% dimethylpolysiloxane• Guaranteed reproducibility, selectivity and retention times• High efficiency, long lifetime• Good selectivity for aromatic compounds• Available in fused silica and UltiMetal• Suitable for a wide range of applications
By incorporating 5% phenyl groups in the dimethylpolysiloxane polymer, the CP-Sil 8 CB column has a slightly higher polarity than CP-Sil 5 CB columns. This results in a better selectivity for aromatic compounds and is generally the best choice when developing a method. CP-Sil 8 CB shows excellent column-to-column reproducibility and very high column efficiencies. Specially tested versions with guaranteed performance for PCB and pesticide analysis, CP-Sil 8 CB for PCB and CP-Sil 8 CB for Pesticides, are also available. See our Select™ columns.
See page 212 for our premium low-bleed 5% phenyl, 95% dimethylpolysiloxane FactorFour phase, VF-5ms. Varian’s new FactorFour columns have quickly become the industry standard for high performance GC analysis. The ultra-low bleed columns deliver superior responses for trace analysis, lower detection limits, and longer lifetime.

Varian PLOT GC Columns
Porous Layer Open Tubular capillary (PLOT) columns are ideal for separating gases and volatile compounds. The stationary phase of PLOT columns is based on an adsorbent or a porous polymer. This allows users to experience the benefits of high-resolution capillary gas chromatography when analyzing a wide range of gases and volatiles. Varian’s PLOT columns deliver superior mechanical and temperature stability, and allow for increasingly fast methods.
Varian has been the industry leader in PLOT technology since we introduced the first PLOT column in 1988. Today Varian not only continues to offer the widest range of PLOT columns, but now also delivers the latest generation of highly stable bonded PLOT columns with improved reliability in the analysis of volatile solvents and hydrocarbons.
The Varian Select Al2O3 MAPD
The Varian Select Al2O3 MAPD is an aluminum PLOT column optimized for Methyl Acetylene and Propadiene Response for unsurpassed analysis of trace reactive hydrocarbons in the C1-C10 range. See page 248 for more detailed information.

Bonded PLOT ColumnsThe new generation of adsorption materials deliver the highest resolution and shortest analysis times
When developing bonded PLOT columns, Varian created a unique column coating process that grows the porous polymer layer “in-situ” within the column. As a result, the Varian bonded PLOT columns show superior stability, zero particle loss and low bleed when compared to the older manufacturing process of coating the inside of the column with discrete particles. These outstanding capabilities in turn lead to improved methods, eliminate the risk of particle loss, and the need for particle traps. Higher temperature specifications together with the improved separation of volatile compounds make bonded PLOT columns a better choice than conventional general-purpose columns for many methods in the chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
Varian bonds the porous polymer to the column so there are no loose particles to cause detector spiking or valve columns. This makes PoraBOND columns ideal for use with pressure programs, GC/MS applications, and valve switching. Due to the bonding of the PoraBOND columns, they withstand repeated water injections.

KCl or Na2SO4 Deactivation
The aluminum oxide PLOT columns are deactivated using very small salt crystals, providing a reproducible and stable deactivation up to 200ºC. Depending on the type of deactivation salt, the CP-Al2O3 column will show different selectivities. KCl salt deactivation results in a relatively nonpolar Al2O3 surface, while Na2SO4 deactivation results in a polar surface where unsaturated compounds like ethylene and acetylene (ethyne) and methyl acetylene (propyne) are retained longer.

CP-Sil 8 CB for Amines• Guaranteed for the analysis of alkylamines and alkanolamines• Suitable for a wide range of amines and diamines• Elutes C3-C14 amines at nanogram level
CP-Sil 8 CB for Amines is a base-deactivated 5% phenyl polydimethyl-siloxane column that can be used for a wide range of amines. Due to a thermal stability of up to 350 °C, it can analyze a broad range of amines up to C20, as well as the alkanolamines. Many “amine” deactivated columns irreversibly adsorb subnanogram levels of amines, but not the CP-Sil 8 CB for Amines column. It has the ability to elute amines at the subnanogram level.

Select FAME• Efficient separation of FAME isomers due to optimized selectivity• Long life time due to high polarity 100% bonded phase • Short run times due to extended Tmax of 290 ºC• Lower detection limits due to low bleed• Better separation due to high efficiency and loadability
Varian’s Select FAME column is tuned for optimal Cis / Trans separations of FAMEs, especially the C18 isomers. The bonded Select FAME column has an isothermal maximum operation temperature of 275 °C and a programmed temperature of 290 °C - a dramatic improvement of 50 °C compared to nonbonded columns. Select FAME has better detection limits because the column has a very low bleed level. Even though this is a very polar column, the column efficiency is extremely high. Columns up to 200 meters are available for detailed analysis of the C18:1 isomer cluster. The Select FAME column also offers a factor of 3 higher loadability, further improving the shape and separation for FAME isomers - especially if one component is present at a higher concentration.

CP-Chirasil-DEX CB• Chemically bonded ß-cyclodextrin phase• Highest resolution factor between isomers• Stable enantiomer selectivity• Long-term stability
CP-Chirasil-DEX CB is one of Varian’s unique bonded optically active phases that possesses a high degree of inertness. Optical isomers containing keto, ether, alcohol, and even acidic groups can be analyzed without derivatization. The bonded cyclodextrin on the nonpolar siloxane backbone results in low elution temperatures, providing highest resolution factors between optical isomers. The bonded phase makes the column very robust and enables its use for all injection techniques.
