Welcome to the Music ProgrammeIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to the second half of our 2011-12 season of music from the University of Salford – featuring many of our students, staff as well as many visiting international artists.

We welcome for the first time the Central Band of the Royal Air Force; Sergio Barrenechea, Lucia Barrenechea and Hugo Pilger from Brazil; and students from the music department of Ohio Northern University who will collaborate with students and staff during our Gala concert in March which will bring our ‘Salford Music Day’ to a climax at the University’s fabulous Maxwell Hall.

In March I look forward to an exciting collaborative community project culminating in an innovative performance between MAPAS, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, schoolchildren from Salford and our music staff, the exciting offerings of the Festival of International Music and Dance as well as the first Salford programme of the Sonic Fusion Festival in April

I am very happy to welcome back regular visitors: ‘Contemporary Music Pianist in Residence’ Richard Casey, ‘String Quartet in Residence’ The Barbirolli Quartet (it’s been a personal pleasure to write a new piece especially for them), ‘Concert Organist in Residence’ Jonathan Scott, Halle Brass, the Adelphi Brass Band and the University of Salford’s Big Band and Brass Band. One of our final concerts ‘An Academic Finale’ will mark the sad passing of Dr Roy Newsome and Dr Goff Richards celebrating the enormous contribution that each of these fine musicians made to the University. I do hope that you join us on many occasions in the months ahead. All best wishes,

Stephen
