FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Canada Dreams… I love Canada. We live in a beautiful country, full of friendliness and diversity. I am proud that we are wel-coming and interested in one another’s stories. And as the perfect reflection of that, I marvel at the incredible beauty that imbues this part of the world, from sea to sea to sea, with a dazzlingly unique specialness.

To me, it sounds like Westben! For eighteen years, it has been our sincere pleasure to welcome you to this beautiful place full of a myriad of spectacular, joyful music-making. We are proud of our performances; our friendly supporters, staff and volunteers; and our

remarkable venue. Above all, I love the way this marvelous musical mosaic all comes together: the array of artists, the wonderfully supportive community, and our visitors. It’s a Canadian dream come true!

It seems fitting, then, that our Summer Season 2017 explores Canada’s dreams in all their varied and glorious colours. Right from our opening Canada Day Weekend, with its focus on coming together, through Canada on the World Stage, which presents four pianists with different, but uniquely Canadian perspectives, we explore multiple fac-ets of the Canadian spirit. We proudly salute our international heros: Angela Hewitt, Canadian Brass and Michael Schade; and those destined to become so: Rashaan Allwood, Jan Lisiecki and the Rolston String Quartet. There are the Canadian traits: fun (The Arrogant Worms), fiddling (Everything Fitz!), folk (Donovan Woods) and even a little frivolity (Lenni Stewart’s Social Club). There is very timely friendship as the Montreal Guitar Trio teams up with the California Guitar Trio. There is the welcoming spirit as we greet Belgian artists Jolente De Maeyer and Nikolaas Kende. There is the friendly tip of the hat to our southern neighbours in Waves of Broadway. And there is our own internationally respected yet distinctly Canadian stamp on the jazz world in our Jazz Out of This World!

The following pages are full of all the exciting concerts planned for our 18th summer music festival at The Barn, as well as many of the activities happening year round at the Clock Tower Cultural Centre and elsewhere. We are extremely grateful to all those who help bring these dreams to life: the sponsors, members, donors, volunteers, staff, government agencies, foundations and of course, our wonderful local and visiting guest artists. What a happy convergence! This is Canada. What a wonderful place in which to dream!

Brian Finley, C.M.Artistic & Managing Director

TAPESTRY OPERA PRESENTS…

Bandits in the ValleyThursday, September 21, 4:00 pm at the Westben Barn & FarmhouseThere are two sides to every story! And now, two venues… Toronto’s Tapestry Opera presents a delightful two-scene opera about late 19th century Ontario, when bandits thrived in the dark corners between stiff Victorian values and the influx of new immigrants. Will a wealthy land owner and his guests be distracted by a travelling Gilbert & Sullivan troupe long enough for a greedy bandit to break into his house? And what of the bandit who has promised his love to both the leading actress and the house’s maid? (limited to 60 patrons)

Chestnut CabaretSunday, September 24 at 2:00 pm at The Barn

Fans of Westben CampaignThis Spring, out at The Barn…

Thanks to an Ontario 150 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we will be able to make some dearly needed improvements at The Barn during the spring of 2017. These include repairs to the cement pad and, most exciting, the installation of a large overhead fan. This is sure to come as welcome news to our patrons, as now, we can keep a beautiful summer breeze going right through the warmest days in July! We can also keep you warmer at the Christmas concerts…

Fans of Westben! Part of the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant depends on securing a contribution of $11,000, and with that in mind, we have initiated the “Fans of Westben” campaign.

Please consider becoming a Fan of Westben; All donations of $20 or more will receive tax receipts and all donations will receive our thanks! Please contact the office to make a donation or for more information.
