UNESCO-IHE is the largest international graduate education institute in the field of water. The institute confers fully accredited MSc degrees and promotes PhDs.

Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 162 countries, the vast majority from the developing world.

164 PhD fellows are currently enrolled in water-related research. The Institute carries out numerous research and capacity development projects throughout the world.

Access to water is a likely cause of future conflict throughout the world.

663 million people lack access to improved drinking water sources.

2.4 billion people worldwide are without access to hygienic sanitation facilities – including 1 billion who defecate in the open.

800 thousand children die from diarrhea and related disease.

Over the past century, floods and droughts have accounted for 94% of all fatalities due to extreme weather events.

Agriculture accounts for 70% of all water withdrawn by the agricultural, municipal and industrial (including energy) sectors.

Sustainable Development Goals will place great emphasis on protection and maintenance of sustainable water use, reduction of pollution and ecosystem services.

The World Economic Forum considers water crises as the first Global Risk for the future.

Why there is a need for water professionals

1955Following devastating floods in East-Pakistan (now Bangladesh) where many people lost their lives, a request came for Dutch technical assistance.

1957 The first 'International Course in Hydraulic Engineering' was developed for 45 professionals from 21 countries. This marked the start of the Institute.

1986 First MSc degrees awarded.

1994First PhD degree awarded.

2003 Agreement was reached between UNESCO and the Government of the Netherlands for the establishment of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education.

2014 150th PhD degree awarded.

• UNESCO-IHE offers 4 accredited International Master of Science programmes, with a total of 16 specializations.
