Technical approach:

Market approach:

Technical textiles are textiles which fulfill technical requirements inorder to perform better (e.g. in order to meet technical standards). The performance attributes of a technical textile outweigh anyaesthetic requirements.

Technical textiles offer solutions for the multi-faceted technicaldemands of our society (e.g. environmental issues, personal security, general security, health and well being).

* source: Euratex 'Working group for technical textiles'

The success of technical textiles is in most part due to the creativity, innovation and versatility in woven, knitted and non woven fabrics, with applications spanning an enormous range of end uses includingprotective clothing, medical and insulation materials for buildings.

The technical textiles sector is one of the most innovative branches ofindustry in the world, ranking as one of the five high-tech sectors withthe greatest potential for development. The global market fortechnical textiles today is worth an estimated 97 billion Euros, whereAsia leads the world in terms of textile comsumption with 8.5 milliontons followed by the USA and Europe with 5.8 and 4.8 million tonsrespectively.

Introduction

5

Page 8: UK Technical Textiles Directory.pdf

At present the key areas for technical textiles are automotive 28%,industry 18%, building 10%, protection 10% with the other 34% sharedivided between medical, sport, packaging, agriculture, performanceclothing and home.

Important too for the huge economic potential offered by functionaltechnical textiles is their ability to combine with each other to createever new technical innovations: it is worth mentioning also that manyof these innovations are dependant on the high quality (and oftenhigh value) of raw materials used.

The industry places much emphasis on its diversification in researchto discover, promote and implement innovation as the driving force ofgrowth.

The United Kingdom is seen as a world leader in the field of technicaltextiles.

The technical textiles sector has been a growth market for severalyears and includes many niche segments related to individualapplications. Every day sees the constant emergence of new groupsof products thanks to tailor-made fibres, new processingtechnologies and ultra-modern textile machinery. Because of theincreasing importance of technical textiles, there is now a huge needfor technology, quality and precision in the production of fibres, yarns, knits, wovens and non wovens as a first stage in the textilemanufacturing process. The development of new high-tech fibres andthe need to process them with care require all sorts of things fromflexible restructuring of the production process to user-friendlyworking procedures.
