Exemplar: Japanese teachers’ lesson study

Cycles of activities in which teacher groups, usually by grade level, together design, implement and improve one or more research lessons

Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education – Teacher quality

Page 17: Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education

Lessons are then taught by teachers, with team members observing lessons and taking careful notes on learning processes.

Generate “shareable knowledge” and the development of schools as organizations where teachers can learn and progress together.

continuous innovation in teacher preparation

programmes are required.

How do we prepare quality teachers? What research evidence can inform us about

design of new programmes? How to bridge the theory-practice divide? Strengthening culturally responsive ITE

China’s “Master of Education for Secondary Schools in Rural Areas”. A solution to the quality

problem in rural schools.

Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education – Pathways

Page 22: Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education

The cycle lasts 5 years. The first year - teaching assignment in a

secondary school in a county. The second year – full-time course work. The third year - teaching, taking up online

courses and completing a dissertation. No examinations but dissertation and an oral examination taken in the third year.

The fourth and fifth years are spent teaching full-time in the school.

Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education

Page 29: Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education

Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education – Partnerships

• Successful partnerships occur when faculties of education maintain close ties with schools, deeply engage other faculties in the university as well as involving other agencies in teacher preparation.

• Governments play a key role in facilitating partnerships in teacher education.

• Principles and strategies must be put in place to ensure a productive and successful partnership in teacher preparation.

Page 30: Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education

Transforming 21st Century Teacher Education – Partnerships

New thinking around Partnerships • Interagency collaboration is both promising

and challenging ...need to manage tensions between autonomy and ‘relational agency’

• From bilateral to multilateral ...how to best bring existing ‘networks of expertise’ to manage educational issues.

Summing up …
