Hello Travis Tigers We are in our second month of the new semester and there are many exciting things happening on campus. We started the semester by watching history in the making with a school-wide viewing of the Inauguration of President Obama and Vice-President Biden. Along with Austin High School, Travis High School was represented at the events of the Inaugural Week as over 25 of our students and staff traveled to Washington D.C. to witness the event. We encourage you to come and see our sports teams and other extracurricular events which showcase the many talents of our Tigers. The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are headed into the last half of their season and the soccer season is underway with both sports having high expectations to make district play-offs. Our softball, baseball and track teams will be starting their season shortly. Our Fine Arts Department showcased the many talents of our actors, singers and musicians with the musical production of “Bye Bye Birdie.” Academically, we are gearing up for all kinds of testing – Advanced Placement, PSAT, SAT, ACT and the state assessment - TAKS. Be looking for more information regarding these tests and schedules by accessing our school web site and listening to our call-out messages. In addition, we are preparing for the 2009-‘10 academic year. Course Selection Night was held on Feb. 3 in the Travis HS auditorium. Our counselors are also visiting the middle schools and Travis classrooms to assist students with the selection of classes for the ‘09-‘10 school year. We are in the beginning stages of preparing for Travis High School’s FIRST gradu-ating class. The Class of 2009 is scheduled to graduate at 9 a.m. on Sat., June 6 at the Toyota Center. We applaud this class not only for being the first to graduate, but for their show of leadership as they pave the way for all of the Travis community to enjoy the spirit and traditions that make the high school experience complete. In addition, the Class of 2009 will celebrate on May 23 with the FIRST Senior Prom to be held at the JW Marriott in the Galleria. More information on Class of 2009 events as well as other school-wide events can be found on the school website. We are proud of all the efforts of our Tiger students, parent organizations and staff, and we hope to see you at many of the upcoming events. Thank you for your continued support of Travis High School.

Sincerely, Karin Grisdale

Spring May Bring Exam ExemptionsFor Students

Students who have a minimum grade of 80 in applicable courses and have met the minimum standards on their TAKS test (2100 scale score) may be exempt from semester exams this spring. Students may not have more than four absences in each class, and being tardy three times to a class will equal one absence (for exemption purposes only). Absences in school-sponsored activities or due to death in the immediate family are not counted in assessing eligibility for exemptions. Students can not have a removal to CAEP/DAEP/JJAEP and any outstanding fees or fines. Ninth graders are only exempt from English and math exams. Sophomores will be exempt English, math science and social studies exams. Juniors and seniors will be exempt from all exams. However, students eligible for exemptions may take one or more exams to improve their semester average. This is optional and initiated by the student or parent.

Juniors Urged To Take The SAT

The counseling department wants to remind parents that students should take the SAT during their junior year. The SAT is a measure of the critical thinking skills a student needs for academic success in col-lege. The test is offered seven times a year in the United States. The test takes 3 hours and 45 minutes and is divided into 10 sections. The SAT helps college admis-sions officers make fair and informed admissions decisions. Students may take the SAT as many times as they would like.

Dollar Grams HelpingTo Inform Students Of Available Scholarships

To provide scholarship information to juniors and seniors, the counseling department has developed the Dollar Gram sys-tem. Dollar Gram posters are hung in the commons area, the “A” hallway and stairwell 1. The Dollar Gram posters list various scholarships that are currently available, the dollar amounts of-fered, deadline dates and the web addresses. The Dollar Grams are updated and posted once a month in the same designated areas.

Chess Club The Chess Club meets 2:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays in Room P223. The team is gearing up for three tour-naments this semester. Dues are $5. For more information, contact David Householder at [email protected].

Speech and Debate Team Continuing The Tradition

The speech and debate students have been very busy this year. So far, three students have qualified for state – senior Kah Yangi, sophomore Nilita Kansra and junior Nabil Panjwani. This is the third year Travis has had students qualify for state. The speech and debate team hosted their first TFA tournament Dec. 12-13. It was a great success with 23 area teams attending. Ed Noll, speech and debate coach, received the Donus D. Roberts Quad Ruby Coaching Award from the National Forensic League.
