Hello fellow Travis Tigers! We are fast approaching the end of our first semester of the 2008-2009 school year. Our athletic teams were totally awesome in varsity play this year, surprising many of the other schools that such an “upstart” high school could do so well! However, it was not a surprise to anyone who knows how hard our players and coaches’ work to exhibit their best athletic ability with our standard “class and character”. Our students have embraced their academic studies with the same determination and drive. We have increased the number of students taking the Pre-SAT and the SAT exams from last year. Also, the class enrollment for the Advance Placement courses has grown considerably from the previous year. The band and dance team have performed superbly in several area and regional contests this fall. Three of our orchestra students were selected for the All State Orchestra. These are but some of the examples of the level of participation and ac-complishment shown by our students each day. As we approach the end of this first semester, I encourage each student to continue studying and earn their highest grades yet! Parents, if you are unsure of how to assist your student in preparation for these last few weeks, contact one of our counselors or your child’s teacher. As always, if I may be of assistance, please call me. And, as we say around here each morning, “It’s a Great Day to be a Travis Tiger!”

2009 Travis Teacher of

the Year English/Language Arts depart-ment chair Linka Pace was named 2009 Travis Teacher of the Year in November. The selection process began with nominations by faculty who then voted on three finalists who were interviewed by a committee and required to submit an essay. The other two finalists were English instructor and coach Luke Chauvin and mathematics depart-ment head Kim Johnston. Pace is now entered in the FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year competition. The winner will be named in the spring.

Principal JJ Kyle congratulates English/Lan-guage Arts department chair Linka Pace on being named 2009 Travis Teach-er of the Year in November.

Williams Named Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year

While this happened earlier in the year, we have not produced a newsletter to share this information with parents. Con-gratulations to Stephanie Williams of Travis High School, who was named Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year at a special awards dinner held earlier in the year. Williams was selected as FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year and progressed to the regional competition as a finalist. She will advance to participate in the Texas Education Agency’s annual Texas Teacher of the Year Program, where two teachers (elementary and secondary) will be selected in October to represent the entire state. Williams has 14 years of teaching experience and two of those years have been teaching mathematics at Travis.

Softball Tryouts Softball tryouts begin on Jan. 26. Get in contact with Coach Crissman if you have any questions.

Volleyball Team The Tiger Volleyball team made history in No-vember by being the first Travis team to make it to the finals of the Region 3 Volleyball Tournament. Travis attacked the Katy Tigers in the Semi Finals winning 3 straight games to move on to the finals on Saturday. They faced a strong Clear Creek team who had been to the Regional Tournament the past 3 years. The Tigers put up a tough fight but came up one match short of the State tournament. The Lady Tigers took the Runner-Up Regional tro-phy with great pride and finished the season as Unde-feated 18-0 District Champs, Bi-District Champs, Area Champs, winners of the Regional Quarter Finals and Semi Finals, and Regional Runner Up placing them in the top 8 5A teams in the State of Texas with a season record of 36-10. They had an amazing ride and made many memories along the way that will last Forever. The Tigers have four seniors who played in their last match as Travis Tigers: Setter Brittney Anderson, Right Side Hitter Ashley Dorroh, Libero Shelby Hillman, and Setter Ashleigh Lucco. Great Job Lady Tigers! Travis is very Proud of you! Thanks go out to all the fans who supported the Lady Tigers this season and this past weekend.

Once again the Travis Tiger Cheerleaders represented William B. Travis High School with honor and pride as they participated at UCA Cheer Camp at Texas A & M University August 4th through 7th. In addition to winning the prestigious “Camp Champion” Award for their Large Varsity Extreme Routine, THS also brought home six All-Star Cheerleaders. They are: Sophomore, Kayli Hyek; Junior, Jessica Neal; Seniors, Chaleste Love, Leanna Orsak, Joe’l Sanchez and Co-Captain Reagan Davis. Three Senior Cheerleaders received the honor of being invited to join the UCA Cheer Staff next year. They are Chaleste Love, Reagan Davis and Madison Henry. For the first time, THS was represented at Mascot Camp by junior Kayla Posey.

Yearbooks On Sale Through Smart-Pay The 2009 Travis Stripes yearbook is on sale now through Jan. 20, 2009, through www.smart-pay.com. Parents of all Travis students should have received two letters from Taylor Publishing Co./Smart-Pay containing purchase information, including a unique customer number which can be entered on the site for quick access. However, even if parents do not have or have misplaced the customer number, they can still order. “Just enter your first name and last name, and choose the state, city and school,” Dianne Smith, Travis Media Team adviser, said. Books can be purchased via credit card or check through Smart-Pay. The price of a book is $72.50, and other op-tions, such as plastic covers, nameplates, yearzines and autograph sections are also available for purchase through the web site. “At the present time, no books can be purchased on campus. All orders must go through Smart-Pay,” Smith said. “When books are delivered in the spring, if there are any extras available they can be purchased here at school for $85 cash. You definitely save money by ordering early through Smart-Pay.”

Yearbook Congratulatory Ads Available Parents who would like to congratulate their students for a job well done, graduating, or for just being neat kids are invited to place an ad in the 2009 Stripes yearbook. Sizes include a full page ($350), one-half page ($260), one-fourth page ($140) and one-eighth page ($75). Color and black-and-white ads are the same price. Full-page and one-half page ads can be purchased through www.smart-pay.com at the same time a yearbook is purchased. Credit cards or checks are accepted. All sizes are available for purchase through the Travis Media Team at the school, payable by cash or check. Checks should be made out to THS Activity Fund. (Designate “yearbook ad” in the “for” area.)

Deadline for ad purchases is Jan. 15, 2009. “At that time we will have to give an exact page count to the pub-lisher, so we cannot accept any more ads after Jan. 15,” Dianne Smith, Travis Media Team adviser, said. All pictures for the ads must be submitted digitally and should be 300 ppi resolution or higher in order for them to print best. The Media Team suggests pictures be submitted on a CD rather than through email. Guidelines for the number of pictures for each size are as follows: full page: 5-7; half-page, 3-4; one-fourth page: 2; one-eighth page: 1. “If a collage is desired for the full-page ads, we can accept more pictures,” Smith said.

FFA Takes Honors The Travis FFA competed in our annual Leadership Development events recently. They competed on a district level against 19 other schools from the area. The top six teams in each event receive a banner. Last year the organization had 12 mem-bers and brought home 1 banner. This year the goal was to win three banners, but they came home with five. Only two of the members had ever gone to this competition before. “Our future looks bright. We are only losing two seniors next year,” Heather Mills, sponsor, said.
