Thomas Point: Saving the Chesapeake's MostFamous LighthouseBy Steve Blakely May 23, 2008

This month marks, simultaneously, the second and the 134th anniversaryof Thomas Point Lighthouse -- the most famous and most photographedlighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay, just southeast of Annapolis.

From May through September, the relatively new owners of "TP" (as it'slocally known among Chesapeake sailors) are opening the lighthouse tovisitors. It's only the second season in the 134-year history of thisnational landmark that it's been open to public tours -- a treat, sinceThomas Point is one of only nine lighthouses in the United States thathave been officially bestowed with "national landmark" status.

Last year about 600 people clambered up the lighthouse ladder, most ofthem locals who before could only get close to it by boat. This year about1,000 visitors are expected to take the one-hour tour. Weekend tours(Saturday and Sunday only, every other weekend) are run to thelighthouse (only 18 to a boat) from the Annapolis Maritime Museum. That's located in Eastport, the distinctive neighborhood that is technicallypart of (but very different from) the larger city of Annapolis.

At $70 fee per head, the proceeds will raisemuch-needed moneyfor the unusualpartnership that took
