General Requirements Brochure THE VISION SGS sees a vibrant graduate training and research system in the country and region, in which Makerere University is the premier Institution, producing high-performing graduates, who are innovative, responsive to demand and leaders in development activities at national or regional levels. Within this vision SGS aims at building on and maintaining her position as the leading academic institution in Uganda and region. The proposed strategic interventions will place Makerere University at the forefront of development activities in the country by providing intellectual leadership and development products for wider use of communities. THE MISSION The mission of the SGS is to foster and manage graduate training and research by University units by promoting quality and development impact oriented research, publication and dissemination of knowledge and innovations to meet the changing needs of society and for sustainable development. The SGS will support this mission largely by coordinating research for development and training activities of the University. The School will also be a key role resource mobilization to support activities of units. SGS CORE VALUES SGS sees herself as an umbrella organization made up of units conducting research and training but with the school providing overarching policy guidance and coordination of activities to guide operations. SGS commits itself to foster efficiency, effectiveness and relevance of graduate training and research by units of the Makerere University. SGS builds most of its activities on collaboration and active partnerships within the University as well as with external stakeholders and development partners. SGS commits itself to engage with University Units and partners in an exclusive, transparent and trustworthy manner where credits are shared with integrity and accountability and obligations are shared in a reliable way being fully committed to the impacts and strategic goals. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Minimum requirements (a) For Postgraduate Diplomas: Normally a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognised University in a subject or subjects relevant to the course applied for. (b) For Master's Degrees:

Normally a Bachelor's degree of at least lower second class division or equivalent from a recognised University. Applicants with lower qualifications must satisfy the relevant department that they have acquired academic growth, for instance, by evidence of research and publications. In some departments, a qualifying course followed by examination is given.

(c) Doctorate Degrees NB: All disciplines in Makerere University offer Ph.D programmes subject to availability of staff and other resources. (i) For Ph.D. Degree: Normally a Master's degree from a recognised University in a field relevant to the area of further studies. First degree graduates who wish to register for Ph.D. would normally register for a Master's degree first and after a year or two of satisfactory progress may apply for upgrading of their candidature to Ph.D. level. A research outline (synopsis) of 3-5 pages length should accompany the application. This will be useful as a guide for PROVISIONAL ADMISSION for one year during which time the applicant will develop a comprehensive research proposal necessary for a FULL ADMISSION as soon as the proposal is approved. (ii) For M.D. degree: A Master's degree in Medicine from a recognised University. (iii) For LLD. Degree: A master degree in Law from a recognised University (d) Higher Doctorates D. Lit. & D.Sc. Degrees (Higher Doctorates) are awarded upon successful submission of original published and unpublished works. These are higher doctorates normally applied for by holders of Ph.D. degrees. (g) Occasional Postgraduate students: (i) Under occasional studentship, the University accepts non-degree students from other recognized University institutions on an agreed fees structure. Applications should be channeled through the Heads of such institutions. (ii) Candidates may apply for registration at any time and could be admitted at the beginning of any semester of the academic year. (iii) Occasional students may register for at least a semester and for not more than one academic year. (iv) No such registration shall overlap two academic years. (v) All applications must be addressed to the Director, School of Postgraduate Studies who shall, in consultation with relevant bodies within the University, register such students.

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH PROGRAMME.

A: POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS

Postgraduate Diploma in Anaesthesia Fees: Shs. 1,500,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 2,500 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific Requirements: Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB.Ch.B) and at least one year of Clinical experience after full registration (preferably up-country).

2. Postgraduate Diploma in Community Based Rehabilitation.

Fees: Shs. 1,500,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 2,500 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific requirements: At least two years working experience with disabled people or such other related work experience. Disabled persons with relevant qualifications will be given preferential consideration. 3. Postgraduate Diploma in Construction Project Management

Fees: Shs. 1,300,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,300 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Requirements: Applicants should possess a good first degree in Architecture, Engineering or its equivalent from Makerere University or any other recognized University/Institution. Applicants from other related professions, with similar qualifications will be considered as well.

4. Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (Day & Evening programmes)

Fees: shs 3,000,000/- p.a (Ugandans) US$ 3,000 p.a (Non Ugandans)

Specific Requirements:

To qualify for admission, a candidate must fulfill the general Makerere University entry requirements for Postgraduate Diploma programmes, and in addition a candidate must be a holder of EITHER

- a first degree in Computer Science OR - any other degree with evidence of having taken some acceptable courses in Computer Science areas such as Programming and

Computer Applications, computer Architecture, Operating Systems and Database Management Systems 5. Post Graduate Diploma in Information Systems Fees: Shs. 3,000,000 p.a (Ugandans) US$ 3,000 p.a (International Students) Specific Requirements: To qualify for admission, a candidate must fulfill the general Makerere University entry requirements for a Postgraduate diploma. In addition a candidate must be a holder of Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science or any other degree with evidence of having taken acceptable courses in either information Technology or Computer Science. 6. Postgraduate Diploma in ICT Policy and Regulation Fees: Shs. 3,000,000 p.a (Ugandans) US$ 3,000 p.a (International Students)

Specific requirements: To qualify for admission, a candidate must be a holder of any first Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Institution

7. Postgraduate Diploma in Demography

Fees: Shs. 1,000,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,800 p.a. (International Students)

Specific requirements: Applicants must have done one of the following subjects at the University: Sociology, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Statistics, Medicine, Social Work and Social Administration. Applicants should indicate their Mathematics background which must be at least a credit at '0' level. 8. Postgraduate Diploma in Education

Fees: Shs. 400,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 600 p.a. (International Students)

Specific requirements: Applicants should normally have studied two of the subjects listed below during their University Undergraduate Course and one subject should have been studied up to final degree level: African Languages, Agriculture, Art, Botany, Chemistry, Craft, English, French, Geography, German, History, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Religious Education, Zoology, Economics, Political Science and Physical Education. Applicants who do not fulfill the above conditions must satisfy that their academic background is appropriate for two of the method courses offered in the Faculty. 9. Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Impact Assessment (PGDEIA) (Day/Evening)

Fees: shs 1,500,000/-p.a (Ugandans) US$1,300p.a (International Students) Specific Requirements: A candidate will be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma programme if he/she possesses a University Degree or its equivalent in the Physical, Biological, Health or Humanities courses from Makerere University or any other recognized Institution of higher learning.

10. Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Information Management

Fees: Shs. 900,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 900 p.a. (International Students)

The general requirement for admission to Makerere University have to be fulfilled and candidates must have- atleast a second class lower degree from a recognized university in an appropriate field such as science, engineering, physical sciences or environmental science, At least three years relevant experience in environmental Management, Industrial production or service delivery

Specific requirements: A candidate must possess a good honors degree or its equivalent from Makerere University or any other recognised University/Institution of higher learning. Knowledge of computing will be an advantage.

11 Postgraduate Diploma in Cleaner Production Fees: Shs 1,800,000 p.a (Ugandan) US$ 1,600 (International Students) p.a 12. Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Journalism and Communication (Day)

Fees: shs 2,550,000/=p.a (Ugandans) US$ 1,850 p.a ((International Students) Specific Requirements: The programme is open to all competent candidates with at least a University degree or its equivalent in the Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences or any other relevant field of study from a recognized University or Institution. Intake: The first intake will comprise of 25 students drawn from the Eastern Africa partner countries (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda). This figure will be reviewed from time to time.

13. Postgraduate Diploma in Guidance and Counseling.

Fees: Shs. 2,300,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 2,300 p.a. (International Students)

Specific requirements: : Documentation of two or more years of experience in Counseling or an allied field. These include:- Social workers; lawyers working with advocacy organizations such as FIDA; Careers Teachers and School Counselors; Hall Wardens; Religious Workers, e.g. priests, pastors, nuns, brothers, mullahs and lay ministers; people working with special needs groups such as refugees, street children, the bereaved, victims of rape, defilement, unwanted pregnancies or AIDS. Please note that there will be an initial screening of the applicants and those who will qualify will be invited for an oral interview before final acceptance into the programme. 14. Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship

Fees: Shs. 750,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,250 p.a. (Non- International Students)

Specific requirements: At least one year's working experience in a well-organised library after a Bachelors degree in Librarianship. The applicants should route their applications through the libraries where they are working. The candidates who do not fulfill this requirement but have sponsorship of a library will also be considered. 15. Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication (Evening)

Fees: Shs 1,400,000/= p.a (Ugandans) US$ 2,000p.a (International Students Specific Requirements: The Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication is open to competent candidates with at least a University degree or its equivalent in the Arts , Social Sciences, Natural Sciences or any other relevant field of study from a recognized University or Institution.

16. Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology

Fees: Shs. 1,800,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,800 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific requirements: Applicants must possess a good Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree and should have taken one of the following options at undergraduate level. (a) Mathematics and Physics (3.2.2) OR (b) Mathematics with Physics taken in the first year (3.1.1.) and (3.2.2.) OR (c) Mathematics and Chemistry with Physics taken in the first year (3.2.2. and 3.1.1.). (d) Mathematics and Geography at degree level with physics taken at 'A' Level or equivalent OR (e) Geography at degree level with principal level passes in Mathematics and Physics.

17. Postgraduate Diploma in Theology and Pastoral Studies (at Ggaba National Seminary)

Fees: Shs. 1,200,000/= p.a. (Ugandans) US $900 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific Requirements: A Bachelors degree or its equivalent from a recognized University or Institution of Higher Learning shall be required as

the minimum admission requirement.

18. Postgraduate Diploma in Quality of Health Care

Fees: Shs. 1,457,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) U.Shs. 1,200,000/- plus US$1,500 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific requirements: Applicants must be middle and senior health managers such as: National programme Managers of TB/Leprosy management team, heads of NGO health care institutions in charge of medical units/specialised units. All applicants must hold positions in the health sector where they can do their field attachment or should have negotiated such positions before commencement of the programme. All applicants must posses a good Bachelors degree in any of the following:- Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Science, Nutrition, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering and Education. 19. Postgraduate Diploma in Refugee Law and Forced Migration

Fees: Shs. 1,500,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,500 p.a (International Students)

Specific requirements: Applicants should possess a good first degree from Makerere University or any other recognized University/Institution. They should be working as policy makers and advisors, planners in strategic social & economic sectors, basic and applied researchers, workers in humanitarian assistance areas and disaster preparedness; NGO staff, internal and foreign affairs staff, public service and justice staff; educationists and opinion leaders. 20. Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics

Fees: Shs. 1,000,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,800 p.a. (International Students)

Specific requirements: Applicants must have a strong background in Statistics, Statistics with Economics or Mathematics with several papers in Statistics. A two-year practical experience of Statistics or related field will be an added advantage. Applicants should indicate one area of specialization from the following: National Accounts, Economic Statistics, Agricultural Statistics, Statistical Computing, Sampling Technology, Labour Statistics, Bio-statistics, Statistical Methods, Social Statistics, Development Planning, Econometrics, Social Statistics and Operations Research.

21. Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Studies.

Fees: Shs. 1,400,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 1,400 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific requirements: A candidate shall be admitted to the programme if he/she; (i) Possesses a University degree or its equivalent from a recognised University/Institution of higher learning in at least one of the

languages of specialisation he/she wants to train in; OR (ii) Possess a University degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution of higher learning in Journalism,

Communication Studies and/or Literary Studies and has certified proficiency in at least one of the languages of specialisation; OR (iii) Sits and Passes a proficiency test set by the University in both of the languages he/she wants to train in. Applicants must note that at the moment only Kiswahili, English and French will be available for the training.

22. Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design (PGDUD) (Day/Evening)

Fees: shs 1,300,000/=p.a (Ugandans) US$ 1,300p.a (Non Ugandans)

Specific Requirements: To qualify for admission, a candidate must be a holder of first degree in Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Land Survey or its equivalent conferred from Makerere University or any other recognized University/Institution of higher learning.

Initial In take: Fifteen (15) students Day and fifteen (15) in the Evening classes.

23. Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Health Management

Fees: Shs. 1,400,000/- p.a. (Ugandans) US$ 11,400 p.a. (Non-Ugandans)

Specific requirements: Applicants must have a good first degree or its equivalent in any of the following disciplines: Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, Zoology, Botany, or natural sciences. Applicants who have had considerable experience in natural resources management, i.e. Wildlife Animal Health, Production, Environmental and Legal Management Systems shall be considered on showing proof of their experience and in addition, will be required to do oral interviews.

Application Procedures All applicants for postgraduate diplomas and higher degrees have to satisfy the requirements of the relevant courses and the University regulations. Application forms may be obtained from the School of Postgraduate Studies after payment of an application fee at the Uganda Commercial Bank, Makerere University Branch. Foreign applicants should contact the Director, School of Postgraduate Studies for application forms. Please provide your e-mail and fax addresses for ease of transmission of these forms where applicable. When to apply Unless otherwise stated, all applications are made in March and April of each academic year. The closing date for receiving applications is normally 30th April of the year in which the admission is sought. However, applications for Doctor of Philosophy degrees are made and received throughout the year. Applicants for this category of degree must first present a synopsis of 3-5 pages length to the School of Postgraduate Studies for vetting and approval before they can qualify for provisional admission of up to one year. All completed application forms must be accompanied by relevant copies of certificates and certified copies of academic transcripts and reference letters. Once a candidate has been accepted for registration, one must complete a registration forms both at the School of Postgraduate Studies and at his/her respective faculty/School/Institute. The First Registration take place at the School of Postgraduate Studies. A student is deemed registered after paying the University fees as indicated on the Admission letter, completing two Registration forms, having them checked, signed by the Director of the School and after the student has signed a University Register at the School of Postgraduate Studies. The Names in which the student is registered will be those, which appear on the student's letter of offer and these must be the Names, which appear on the Student's Degree Certificate Degree Certificate. Married students who have acquired Names of their spouses will be permitted to add the New Names to their maiden names on production of a Marriage Certificate. For Registration, Original documents of the following are required for verification purposes:

(a) Current valid identity card. (b) Two copies of each of your academic testimonials/certificates. (c) Five passport size photographs (only 3 are required by the School) (d) A copy of a receipt to acknowledge payment of University fees indicated in the Letter of admission.

Any Postgraduate student who will not have registered according to the Registration Timetable and has not communicated with the Director's office, School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) shall be deemed to have declined the offer of a place at the University. Note: 1. The Registration Timetable is obtainable from the School of Postgraduate Studies, Rooms 414 and 416.

2. For those who will not have completed payment, registration will be considered for only those who will have paid half of the total tuition plus all the statutory fees which include:- Registration, Examination, Administration and Library.

Registration at the Faculty/School/Institute After registration with the School of Postgraduate Studies, each student is required to register in his/her faculty/Institute/school and Department. The dates for registration will be fixed by individual Faculty/Institute/School and Department (where the other 2 photographs will be required.) Cancellation of Offer The offer of a place in the University may be cancelled unless prior notification of valid and acceptable reason explaining failure to register has been received by the Director, School of Postgraduate Studies within three weeks of the 1st Semester. Identity Cards All registered students will be issued with official University identity cards on payment of a fee. Meanwhile it is important that you carry your Current Identity Card, which you may be requested to produce at any time by the University officials. Accommodation The University has very limited accommodation for Postgraduate students and the majority of students have to find their own accommodation. However, students who may wish to be accommodated in the Postgraduate Hall should submit their applications to the Academic warden of the Postgraduate Hall for consideration. The current charges for accommodation only are as follows:

i) Ugandan students pay shs.100,000/= per month for a single room and sh.70,000/= per month each for shared rooms.

ii) Foreign students pay US$150 and US$100 per month for single and shared rooms respectively.

All the First year postgraduate students whether resident or non-resident must also register with the Academic Warden of Postgraduate hall and pay registration charges amounting to sh.11,000/= only. This registration takes place after finalizing registration with the School of Postgraduate Studies. Supervision Every candidate who undertakes research is assigned a supervisor and a co-supervisor who are specialists in the candidate's field of study. An applicant may, if one wishes, indicate the name of the person to supervise a research project. Nevertheless, the authority for the appointment of supervisors rests with the Senate. The supervisor may be changed with the permission of Senate. Progress Reports Every candidate is required to submit (through a supervisor) reports on progress twice a year. This is done on a special progress report form which the department will supply. Failure to fulfill this requirement may lead to discontinuation. Extension of Registration If a candidate realizes that he/she cannot complete his/her work within the time allowed, it is his/her duty to take the initiative to apply for extension of the registration. If the registration lapses, the candidate will be deregistered. Registration is normally sought after 30th September of the candidate's 1st year of registration for Postgraduate Diploma students; 2nd year of registration in the case of Masters degree students and after 3 years for Ph.D. full time students and M.Med. students. Extension of registration is charged as follows for up to:- 6 months - a months worth of tuition fees. More than 6 months - full fees for the academic year. Annual Registration, Administration and Library fees are paid as well. Withdrawal of Registration If a candidate finds that he/she cannot continue with his/her studies due to financial/social hardships but expect to complete studies at a later date, it is his/her duty to request for withdrawal and inform the University through the faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee and Supervisor when he /She would resume studies.

FEES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Before applying, applicants are advised to make sure that they have adequate financial support to cover fees and other requirements. Fees do not cover research and accommodation expenses. An acceptable guarantee of financial support throughout the proposed course is necessary. Fees are currently charged as outlined in Annex A. 1. Application fees are paid at the time of collection of application forms. 2. University fees (i.e. Registration, Administration, Library, Examination and Tuition) MUST be paid to the University before registration. Graduation, Certificate, Convocation and Academic Transcript fees will be paid on completion of the course. 3. Payment of fees may be made in Lump Sum on arrival or in installments (per Semester). 4. University fees MUST be paid in the Bank : Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB), Main, Branches: UCB Makerere, UCB Wandegeya and UCB Mulago) or Bank Draft to Makerere University Council. Students whose programmes are offered through Makerere University Business School (MUBS) are advised to pay their tuition fees at MUBS and all other fees to Makerere University Council for ease of registration.

5. Non-Ugandans MUST pay fees in US Dollars. 6. Refund of Fees: The University regulations regarding refund of fees to students who have chosen to withdraw from programmes/courses are as follows:

(a) Before the end of the First week of a particular semester 100% (b) Between the First and Forth week of a particular semester 60% (c) Between the Fifth and Eighth week of a particular semester 40% (d) From the Ninth week onward 0% refund

Other requirements like books, stationery and materials, accommodation, food, research expenses, etc. the sponsor should pay it directly to the student. (The figures are in Annex A: Section C)

7. The funds for research are paid to the student at the beginning of an approved Research Project.

EXAMINATION REGULATIONS All Masters degree programmes are conducted by course work and dissertation and are based on semester system. The courses are conducted on credit unit basis, a credit unit being equivalent to one contact hour per week per semester i.e. a series of 15 contact hours in 15 weeks. One contact hour is equivalent to one hour of lecture/tutorial or 2 hours of practicals. Each academic year is divided into two semesters each of which lasts 17 weeks. Two weeks are allowed for examinations. There is a recess semester of 10 weeks after the 2nd Semester. Assessment of Courses: (a) Every course is assessed on the basis of 100 total marks with proportions as follows:- Course work - 40% Written examination - 60% (b) Course work consists of laboratory work and progressive assessment (Assignments/Tests) each component assessed at 20%. (c) For courses without laboratory work, progressive assessment carries 40%. (d) A minimum of two course work assignments/tests are required per course for progressive assessment. Grading of Courses Each course is graded out of a maximum of 100 marks and assigned appropriate letter and numerical grades as follows:-

Progression Progression through the courses is assessed in three parts. (i) Normal progression This occurs when a student passes all courses taken. (ii) Probationary This is a warning stage and occurs if:- (a) A student fails a core/compulsory course (b) A student obtains a grade point average (GPA) or Cumulative grade point average CGPA of less than 2.0 (c) Probation is removed when either of the two conditions (a) or (b) no longer holds. Discontinuation A student is discontinued from the Programme if one of the conditions below obtains:- (a) Receiving two probations on the same core/compulsory course. (b) Receiving two consecutive probations based on GPA or CGPA. Re-taking a course There is no supplementary examination in any course of the programmes. However, a student may re-take any course when it is offered again. (a) to pass it if the student had failed it before. (b) to improve the grade if the first pass grade was low. (c) A student who does not wish to retake a failed elective course is allowed to take a substitute elective.

DISSERTATION

Dissertations/Theses are written according to the University approved format. Submission of Dissertation\Thesis for Examination: (i) A candidate is not allowed to formally start on research work unless he/she has passed the taught courses. (ii) A candidate submits a research proposal to the Faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee before the end of the second Semester and begins the research component during the second year of study. (iii) Masters and Ph.D. candidates must be ready to submit their dissertation by the end of their 2nd and 3rd years respectively.

(iv) A candidate intending to submit his or her thesis\dissertation (or practical work), must give three months' written notice of submission for a masters degree or six months written notice for a Doctoral degree to the Director, SPGS and must be endorsed by the Supervisor. (v) When the candidates' thesis/dissertation is ready for submission, he\she should submit three loose bound copies with the authority of the supervisor direct to the Director, SPGS. N.B. It is now a requirement that whenever a candidate is submitting the final copy of his/her dissertation/thesis, it must be accompanied with an abstract in a virus fee diskette. No Dissertation will be accepted without this demand. (vi) Faculty of Medicine Postgraduate regulations on Masters degree dissertations:- a) The dissertation must be presented at least two months before the date of the final examination (written, clinical/practical and oral). (b) The examination above (other than dissertation/viva examination) comprises five parts: Essay, MCQ; Clinical/practical; Oral; and progressive assessment. NB: Essay + MCQ weighted at 200 marks = two individual parts of the Examination. Appointment of Examiners When a candidate gives notice of submission, the examiners and viva voce panel are recommended by the respective Faculty Committee for appointment by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research. It is the responsibility of the Board of Post Graduate Studies to appoint examiners and to ensure safe dispatch of copies of the thesis or dissertation to them. Reports of Examiners The reports of examiners are sent to the Director of the School of Post Graduate Studies who sends them to the Dean/Director for the Faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee's consideration. The Faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee handles the reports as follows: (a) Where all the three reports are favourable or two reports are favourable, one of which must be from the external examiner and only minor corrections are required, the Faculty goes ahead to conduct the viva voce examination without delay. The candidate is advised by the Dean\Director (Chairman) to carry out the minor corrections to the satisfaction of the supervisor. Finally, the Faculty submits its recommendations to the Board of Post Graduate Studies and Research for award of the degree. This must be accompanied by signed minutes of the VIVA VOCE panel. The supervisor\internal examiner appointed to ensure that corrections are effected, should submit his\her report to the School of Postgraduate Studies through the Dean\Director. (b) Where the examiners' reports are unfavourable and the thesis or dissertation requires major revision, the Faculty recommends either:- (i) Revision before viva voce examination. Or (ii) Fail and re-submission of the thesis\dissertation for re-examination and later viva voce. Or (iii) Fail and discontinuation. (c) Where there is divergence in examiner's reports, the Faculty should discuss and recommend appropriate action to the Board of Post Graduate Studies and Research.

Viva Voce Examination All candidates registered for Masters and Doctoral degrees must be subjected to Viva Voce examination in order to assess the candidate's in-depth knowledge of his\her registered work. The following procedure is followed:- (i) Notice for viva voce examination is given by the Dean/Director to the candidate to prepare for that examination and for members of the panel to read the thesis\dissertation. (ii) The viva voce panel consists of six members with a chairman who should normally be the Dean\Director. The role of the chairman is to guide the examination. (iii) Four members including the chairman should form a quorum. The candidates are accorded adequate time to make presentations followed by discussions of up to 2 - 3 hours. (iv) The viva voce examination is a closed one conducted by the appointed panel only. v) Audio Visual facilities are availed to the candidates by departments (where necessary). (vi) The assessment follows laid down criteria where panelists evaluate the presentation, the thesis\dissertation and the response to their questions and give a percentage mark. (vii) Candidates are finally assessed on a 10 (ten) point system and a pass is equal to 5 points (50%). (viii) If a candidate is assessed and found to be on borderline, the panel takes a decision and makes an appropriate recommendation. (ix) In case of revision\corrections being required, one of the internal examiners should be satisfied to the completeness of the exercise. (x) In case of failure the candidate may be advised to redo the work or to discontinue from he degree programme. (xi) The report of the viva voce examination includes the membership and recommendation of the panel and is signed by all panelists that attended the session. Award of Degrees A letter of award of the degree is processed by the School of Postgraduate only when a candidate has made corrections on the thesis/dissertation as recommended by the viva-voce panel and a letter from the examiner who was entrusted by the viva voce panel to oversee the corrections. The examiner writes to the Director SPGS indicating that he/she is satisfied with the corrections, through the Dean/Director. Viva voce examination report be made available to the School of Postgraduate Studies before the award letter is prepared. Note: Only those candidates who have received or have their award letters in preparation are eligible for inclusion in the book of graduands and to attend the graduation ceremony. Occasional Students (a) Such registration shall not lead to any award of the University, unless otherwise decided by Senate, but the Faculty may make appropriate arrangements to test its occasional students and a statement about the work covered by such a student may be made available on request. The student may also sit regular examinations at the end of each semester for which a transcript will be provided on request.

(b) The University shall not enter into negotiations, on behalf of an occasional student, for purposes of getting agreements with another University on the crediting of the student's work covered during his registration although the University shall provide a statement of attendance/result on request in form of a transcript on payment of the transcript fee. Duration of Courses:

Diplomas 1 academic year. Master's degree (full time) 2 calendar years

Master's degree (part time) 3 calendar years. Master of Medicine 3 calendar years Ph.D./MD/LLD. (full time) 3 calendar years Ph.D./MD/LLD. (part time) 5 calendar years Occasional Postgraduate students up to 2 semesters.

With special permission, these periods may be extended to five years for Masters and seven years for Doctoral degrees. Provisional admission for doctoral degrees is for up to one year, during which time a fully vetted and approved proposal will have been submitted and FULL admission obtained. Failure to gain full admission results in discontinuation.

FACILITIES

Library Service The University Library on the main campus serves all students and staff. In addition, there are sub-libraries in the Faculty of Medicine, the East African School of Librarianship, the Faculty of Technology, School of Education, Makerere University Business School, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and several departmental Libraries. Bookshop There is a University Bookshop on the campus and several in Kampala City. Health Service There is a University Hospital on the campus which caters for students. Mulago Hospital, the main national hospital is within walking distance from the main campus. In addition there are several other hospitals and many private clinics in Kampala area. Recreation There are ample facilities for sports and games. These include facilities for football, lawn tennis, squash, basket ball, swimming and athletics. Spiritual Services There are chapels for Christians and a Mosque for Muslims on the campus. In addition, there are many other places of worship in the neighborhood. Community & Transport The University is in a sub-urban location only three kilometres from the General Post Office of Kampala City. Public transport is available to and from the City.
