EDITOR’S NOTE: When I went to find Stephanie & Cory’s Bed Bath & Beyond registry, I had to search by name (I put in Stephanie Wier) and when I tried the state of Colorado, got not results. Then I thought, maybe she still has Texas as her base state so I tried Stephanie Wier, Texas and it worked! Today and Yesterday Last night, August 12, we had a great town meeting in the upstairs of the Town Hall. Lots of people came to participate and some positive decisions were made.

Last Weekends’ Events

1. August Birthday Party for Those with August Birthdays On Friday night, August 8, a birthday party was held at the Silver Plume Grill’s tented-in seating area and it was very well-attended. It was a Pot Luck dinner with birthday cake provided. Here are photos:

Beautiful sunny, mild weather made the birthday party pleasant and many

people came out for the event!

Joe and Alicita Rodriguez-Starr, Corrina Archuleta, and Mark & Marie Rossmiller were

having a nice time, too!

2. Harold Archuleta’s Birthday Party at the Pitkin Schoolhouse Pavilion: Harold was born and raised here in Pitkin and will turn 60 on August 20! His son Travis and daughters Myndy Drexel of Woodbury, MN and Kelsey Kennedy of the Denver, Colorado area threw a birthday party for Harold on Friday night, August 8, at 7:00 p.m. Many of Harold’s relatives were there including his eight grandchildren and three of his sisters, his brother and many cousins.

Page 10: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

Harold loves Tootsie Roll Pops and for many years I have been gifting him some on his birthday. This year I had some TINY mini Tootsie Roll Pops and he seemed happy that I gave him those – I joked that I accidentally put them in the washer and dryer and that they had shrunk. I hope they tasted good!

Harold’s son Travis was in charge of the music at Harold’s birthday party!

Harold listens as daughter Myndy reads what each of the grandchildren said was their

favorite thing about their grandfather!

Page 12: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

Five of Harold’s grandchildren…I think these may all be Myndy & Todd Drexel’s children

but I might be wrong. It was hard for me to keep track of everyone! Cute, with t-shirts that all says “My Papa is the greatest of all time!” and on the back, their numbers in order of

birth! What a cute idea! Plus, since they were all in bright orange, easy to find the children!

Page 13: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

Juliet Seratto was on hand to provide the Happy Birthday song on her fiddle!

3. PHCA’s Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday evening, August 10, at Newcomb Community Center. Delicious spaghetti, a health salad, garlic bread and a choice of white or chocolate cake could be purchased on Sunday evening for $8 per adult or $4 per child!

SAD NEWS Bobbie Davis, wife of the late R.L. Davis, both of Pratt, Kansas and Pitkin, Colorado, who summered in Pitkin for many, many years, passed away on July 23, 2014. Many Pitkin residents also remember Bobbie & RL’s grandson Matt Davis who worked at the Pitkin Fish Hatchery and the Silver Plume at various times back in the 1990s and spent many summers at Bobbie & R.L.’s cabin in the Quartz Creek Properties. Bobbie’s obituary follows: Hardtner, Kan. Bobbie Jean Davis, 89, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. She was born May 17, 1925 in Barber County, the daughter of Robert Belden and Lois Holmes Cook. Bobbie was joyfully united in holy matrimony to Richard Lyman Davis on Oct. 20, 1945. He preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 2010. Bobbie and Richard had four children: Richard Layman Davis Jr., Connie Sue Kowalsky, Donita Joyce Helmer, and Roger Alan Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, son Roger Alan, and a sister Joyce Cook Lawrence. Bobbie is survived by her son Rich Davis and wife Vicki of Pratt; daughters, Connie and husband Tom Kowalsky of Grand Junction, Colo., and Joy Helmer of Hardtner; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Page 17: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

Bobbie devoted her life to her family, and her grandchildren have special memories of their many times spent at the family cabin in Colorado. She loved to play cards and enjoyed showing off her special card shuffling skills. Bobbie attended Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., was a member of the Martha Vail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, General Society of the Mayflower Descendants, and the American Legion Auxiliary. There will be a luncheon and memories-sharing gathering of Bobbie’s family and friends in the basement of the Hardtner United Methodist Church on Aug. 16th at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to South Wind Hospice or the Hardtner Public Library in care of Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124. Condolences may be left at www.larrisonmortuary.com. more: http://www.pratttribune.com/article/20140730/Obituaries/140739965#ixzz3AITjwQuK I received from Christy Couch the following write-up about her experiences in looking for a spot that her family remembered from long ago, near Pitkin. By Christy Couch, whose email address is: [email protected]

In Search of a Memory…

The road became even more difficult to negotiate as darkness encroached. Only two of our five motorcycles had headlights. My dad insisted we push on, anticipating the road would get easier. Going back up the rocky terrain overrun by the creek was not an option. Suddenly, we came to a clearing and in the two beams of light stood a cabin: a cabin minus a roof, door and two walls. Everyone followed suit as my dad dismounted his bike to look around. With the continuing threat of nightfall, he suggested we spend the night. My sister and I objected immediately, not yet old enough to see the big picture. My mom began looking for firewood and in the process found her shelter for the night; the only building with four walls, a roof and a door – the outhouse. But for whatever reason, my dad let go of his secret longing to spend the night in a ghost town and we went onward. To our dismay, the skeletal path once used as a stagecoach road became almost impassible, causing us to walk our bikes more than ride. After crossing the creek once more, we emerged from the forest onto a dirt road, five easy miles from our camp. I imagine my dad had to feel some relief we ended up where he intended, minus the hardship, darkness and tears.

Most of our summer explorations, driven by my father’s fascination with Colorado’s mining history, ended without incident, back at camp, sitting around a warm campfire as the sun lowered behind the mountains. The ones we seem to enjoy memorializing the most, however, involved a little more elbow grease and whining.

My dad brings up that ride outside of Pitkin often, hinting at his desire to return to those cabins in daylight: even more so to put a name with the tiny settlement. As with many camps from the late 1800’s in Colorado, it probably didn’t exist more than a few years, not long enough to make it in books or on a map. My dad had

Page 18: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

looked through several Colorado history books and only found one possibility in Dow Helmer’s “Historic Alpine Tunnel” on a hand-drawn map. He believes it is called “Alpine Hill Lode.” Getting caught up in the quest for information as well, I searched the internet, turning up nothing. I shifted my focus back to good old books. I discovered two more promising entries in Boyd and Carsons “Atlas of Colorado Ghost Towns, Volume 1” and Perry Eberhart’s “Guide to Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps.” Both referred to the settlement as “Givens.”

I am enjoying the connection this historical journey has brought between my dad and me. This past summer was my family’s first opportunity in a while to reunite in Colorado. We had one objective: explore old mining roads as we had in the past. My dad, mom and sister had retired their motorcycles for the comfort of a jeep. I had reignited my motorcycle riding since meeting my husband. He had even resurrected my bike from that night, a 1985 Suzuki DR125.

We made our base camp in Taylor Park, and set aside one day to chase down the memory from 1995. My dad decided to approach the cabins from the lower road, the five easy miles we rode after emerging from the woods. We drove along Middle Quartz Creek Road until it ended at the creek crossing. The continuation of the road was now closed to motorized vehicles. Not that I wanted to relive that part of the memory anyways, even in daylight.

My dad called us over to a foot bridge a little ways down. “This is the bridge we walked our motorcycles across. It was then I knew we had ended up where we were supposed too,” he recalled.

The bridge consisted of two logs with a few cross boards and a handrail that somehow still served its purpose. Crossing the bridge with caution, my dad, sister and I picked up the old road and began walking. My mom stayed behind, not wanting to incite her altitude sickness, usually brought on by exertion. My husband and his two kids chose not to hike in their motorcycle boots.

Thoughts crept into my head as I walked farther in front of my dad and sister, “Would there be any buildings left? What if it was totally overgrown and hidden? I looked back, waiting a few minutes, my dad and sister were nowhere in sight. The terrain and altitude had most likely taken a toll on their sea level endurance. I was now walking in solitude. Meanwhile, I could no longer ignore the skin on my heels being rubbed raw by my motorcycle boots. Feeling foolishly unprepared for a day I had been anticipating, reality set in. My dad and I would not be gazing upon those cabins this trip. I turned around.

As I approached the jeep, I saw the eagerness on my dad’s face. “Well, did you find it? he asked. I hated to disappoint him but responded, “No.”

Knowing my family would not make the trek from Missouri to Colorado for at least another year, the quest became my own. My goal was to return to that long abandoned road, a four hour drive from my house, before the snow came and if nothing else, send my dad a lot of pictures.

Within a few weeks, an opportunity arose when my friend, Kristen, decided to pay me a visit. Knowing she is always up for an adventure, I filled her in on the details and asked if she wanted to spend a day looking for this elusive settlement. She was in with one condition – we had to stay in a hotel, not a tent this time of year. Done.

I decided to look for lodging in Pitkin, the nearest town. Pitkin is a small historical mining town, yielding a population of about 85 year-round residents. Luckily, the Pitkin Hotel, built in 1904, had a couple more weeks

Page 19: The Pitkin Miner - Pitkin Colorado

before shutting down for the winter. Kristen and I would be the only guests that evening, adding a little more thrill to our adventure.

After arriving in Pitkin, we drove about 7 miles to the end of Middle Quartz Creek Road. We crossed over the iconic foot bridge and began our hike, this time well-equipped with hiking boots and camelbacks. Kristen has first-hand experience with my inherited obsession for Colorado’s mining history and humored me as I gasped each time we came upon a manmade object not from this era. We approached a clearing and my eyes fell on a familiar sight. First, I saw the cabin with only two remaining walls, then I saw the outhouse my mom was going to seek shelter in that night. It was still in great condition with a roof and a door. Overcome by excitement, I began taking picture after picture. I couldn’t wait to send them to my family. As expected, I felt a little sadness accompanying my elation, wishing my mom, sister and especially my dad could be there to share the triumph.

Kristen and I explored the area, exclaiming every time we found another cabin. We found at least 7 log structures, including two outhouses that had endured time rather well. My family and I had not seen most of them that night due to our limited time and light.

Hating for the adventure to be over, I suggested we walk further up the road. Soon we came to a “T.” We went right, knowing it led to the Alpine Tunnel Road, where my family had started this memory, 18 years ago. As the course of the creek began to flow over the road, detailed recollections flashed through my mind. Not wanting to hike through the deepening water, we decided to call it a day and headed back to the hotel.

As soon as we regained cell service, I sent my family the picture of the outhouse. My mom said it looked just as she remembered. I could hear my dad asking lots of questions in the background.

As I lay in my hotel bed, I recalled how gratifying the day had been. I lay there thinking and listening. Listening for a door to shut or for ghostly footsteps in the hall of that old hotel which I’m sure has numerous stories of its own. I drifted off to sleep in silence.

My dad and I continue to look for conclusive information on the name and role of that small cluster of cabins. Was it a mining camp or did it relate to the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad that made its way to the nearby Alpine Tunnel?

Maybe next summer my dad and I will get to make the hike together to explore the cabins in daylight.

Mary Alice Golovanoff in 1984

Mary Alice Golovanoff passed away today in Greeley, Colorado. A family member sent this obituary to the Pitkin Miner today. I have thought so often about Mary Alice and wondered if she was still living in Greeley. I had mailed her a letter but it was returned to me. I know many people join me in my sadness today to hear this news. There is another obituary at the following link on the internet:

She and Nick enjoyed their vacation/retirement home at the corner of Third and Main in Pitkin for many years. They took part in community activities, events and had many friends there. Due to health issues, Nick and Mary Alice had to move to Gunnison, Boise and then back to Northern Colorado. They loved and missed their neighbors and mountain home. Nick died in 2010 and Mary Alice has been living at the Rehab and Nursing Center of the Rockies, near her daughter, Sandi (Mrs. Tom) Selders and grand daughter, Elizabeth (Golovanoff) Boesiger. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Nan Eichorn. She leaves children, Sandi, Jenny, and Greg Golovanoff as well as grandchildren; Michael (Robyn) Selders of Greeley; Steven (Elaine) Selders of Florida; Nick (Sarah Gray) Golovanoff; Benjamin (Alicia Walters) Golovanoff; Tanya (Tom Distel) Golovanoff; Christina Golovanoff, USCG; Elizabeth (Ben Boesiger); Cassandra (Jeff Slota); and Teresa (Kevin Roseman). Mary Alice was great grandmother to Chandler, Samantha, Annie, and Calvin Selders; Dominic Halvorson Collupy; Corben and Kaitlynn Golovanoff; Heidi and Jonathan Young and Teagen Slota; Dylan and Harmony Roseman; Kort (and Evangelina). There will be a memorial service on Sunday, July 20 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Family Of Christ Presbyterian Church at 2410 35th Ave. in Greeley, CO.
