PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s hard to believe that 2014 is coming to a close. As I look back on all that has happened since our fiscal year
began June 1, I’m delighted with what we’ve accomplished.
Here are a few highlights: Last summer we provided Wekiva Youth
Camp scholarships for 13 boys and girls from 2nd to 9th grade, each of whom spent a fun-filled week at the FFGC-sponsored environmental
and nature camp. We also provided scholarships for nine high school students to attend FFGC’s SEEK (Saving the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge) Environmental Conference.
September brought an unexpected grant of $5,000 from Pratt & Whitney that has been put to good use at Equestrian Trails Elementary
School where there are now five very active new junior garden clubs. Our other youth garden clubs and youth contests are thriving with over 30 members actively involved with our youth programs. Also in 2014, members helped landscape two Habitat for Humanity homes; attended NGC’s Landscape Design and Flower Show Schools;
had fun and created beautiful designs at our own Garden Art and Floral Design Workshops; and took some exciting trips.
Looking ahead to 2015 - Our meeting on Monday, January 5 will be
the last to be held in the Wellington Community Center. As you may know, the building will be closed in January to make way for a new
structure. Our meeting on February 2 will be held at Village Park on Pierson Road. Details are still being worked out with Village staff. Information on the new meeting space will be forthcoming.
In March we will celebrate Wellington Garden Week. The kick-off event called “Gardening Makes a World of Difference” will be held on Sunday,
March 8 from 11 AM to 4 PM. It will include gardening and landscape design seminars that are free to the public, as well as a plant sale and
other garden-related items for sale. Your help is needed to make this event a success, so be sure to look for the sign-up sheets at the
January 5 meeting. I know I can count on your support.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS By John Siena, Chairman, College Scholarships
WGC Scholarship Committee Report—Winter 2014-15
Your Scholarship Committee set some very aggressive objectives for this year and while we made substantial progress, there is still a lot to do. We are truly blessed to have Dale Hesser and Mary Kastner as hard working effective members of the Scholarship Committee. I expect
that some of what was started this year will actually bear fruit next year, but here is what we accomplished so far:
Updated our standard operating procedure and financial aid application form.
Developed a comprehensive package containing information on financial aid available to
students in the areas of horticulture, environmental science, or related fields of scholarship.
Wrote a single sheet summary of relevant information and application forms for scholarships
available from WGC, FFGC DSR, and NGC providing an easy to understand synopsis for the
student to follow.
Wrote a WGC procedure for the acceptance of grants and donations.
Gave copies of our comprehensive package, along with electronic copies on flash memory
drives to the main Financial Aid Department of PBSC for review and distribution to the
department heads of horticulture and environmental science as well as the satellite financial
aid offices of PBSC; they will be the primary interface between WGC and the students. We
are following a protocol recognizing the importance of the financial aid departments in
achieving our objective to integrate financial need into our scholarship awards.
Mary Kastner (a scholarship committee member) has committed to awarding a legacy grant
for middle school students. Thank you Mary.
YOUTH GARDEN CLUBS NEWS
By Barbara Hadsell, Jr. Garden Clubs Chairman Our After School junior garden clubs at Equestrian Trails Elementary School are off to a great
start. We have 4 clubs that meet weekly at 4 pm for an hour. Pratt & Whitney grant money has been used to purchase grow bags, compost, an irrigation system, individual journals and youth
gardening books. Ace Hardware in Wellington and Jupiter have donated most of the seeds, and each junior group created a thank you poster. We would love to have more WGC members join us!!
“Green Rocket Growers”, 10 second graders at Equestrian Trails
Elementary School in Welllington, are keenly making scientific observations of their vegetable plants growth while also studying how to eat healthy. Dori Green and Martie Spaier are WGC co-leaders. Group
meets Thursdays.

Our kindergarden club is called "The Rainbow Gardening Club". We have 8 amazing members who can't wait until next Monday to garden again. They are very proud of their club and their
plants. The kids really make you melt, and when I see them at school during the week, I get big hugs... the question is always the same... "Are we going to garden today?” Silke Kieswetter Corredor is the parent leader. Group meets Mondays.
The third and fourth grade “Master Gardeners” (5) are successfully growing purple green beans,
peppers, corn, carrots, lettuce and cucumbers. Weekly journaling by each student tracks the growth of the plants. And the juniors had fun creating a large thank you poster for Ace Hardware. Barbara Hadsell and Jacki Anderson are WGC co-leaders. Group meets Tuesdays.
The first grade “Little Sunny Growers” (6) enjoy growing vegetables and WGC leader, Pat Smith,
says “the excitement you see in their eyes is really wonderful. They are all having a good time!” Pat Smith and Linda DeSanti are WGC co-leaders. Group meets Wednesdays.

STUDENTS FROM PALM BEACH CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL By Lisa Ferrano, PBCHS Youth Garden Club Chairman
The High School Gardeners at Palm Beach Central High School voted to change the club to an
Environmental Honors Club. The new designation will require members to maintain a B average in all their science classes. They will be affiliated with Stetson University as well as the FFGC as junior gardeners. There are about 40 students in the Environmental Club and many of them are
also in other honor societies.
The Club recently planted an urban wetland around the perimeter of the retention pond in front of the school on Forest Hill Blvd. They planted hundreds of Spike Rush, Pickerelweed and Duck Potato with a little help from Palm Beach County Landscape Architect, Mike Rawls, and two of his
helpers. This will be a work in progress. As the plants grow and spread in the water, weeds and invasive grasses will be managed and other plants will be installed.
The students spent Saturday, Dec. 6 working on a Habitat for Humanity house. WGC members will get a chance to meet some of these terrific teens at the January 5 meeting when the SEEK
attendees tell us about their experiences at environmental camp last summer.

DEDICATION OF TWO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMES Linda DeSanti, Habitat Chairman
WGC and its team members received an invitation for a Home Dedication ceremony for the
Valdez Family’s home, which WGC and their team helped landscape in October. The dedication took place on Friday November 14th at 9:30 a.m. at 413 S. E St., Lake Worth. There was a
lovely ceremony before handing the keys to the family, after which they invited us to view the home. Refreshments were served. Many thanks to those who helped out!
WGC and its team members received another invitation for a Home Dedication ceremony performed on December 2, 2014 for the Pierre Family. This is another home our team helped to
landscape. The ceremony took place at 208 South E Street at 9:30 a.m. at which time the family received the keys and the volunteers had the chance to tour the finished home.

that’s not your cup of tea, come anyway and just enjoy a "getaway" weekend. Bring a garden club friend, bring a neighbor and learn why Wekiva is such a special place for our youth. Several
WGC members have experienced Wekiva Leadership Training in past years and reported that they had a great time…and the cabins are heated, air conditioned and have comfortable beds.

YOUTH CONTEST UPDATE By Kathy Siena, Youth Contest Chair
The Wellington Garden Club places a strong emphasis on education and our youth. Part of our mission statement says that we are “to instill in our youth the love of gardening and the respect
and protection of the environment”. For several years, to attain these goals, we have been educating our youth through various contest activities and Smokey Bear presentations which
instill, at an early age, respect for and an understanding of the need to protect the environment. To further our mission, we saw a need to work with our communities through our local schools.
Starting in August 2014, members of WGC worked with interested teachers and principals of local Palm Beach County schools to arrange these presentations. On
November 24, 2014, WGC members went to Pine Jog Elementary School in West Palm Beach for a Smokey Bear presentation to approximately 265 elementary age students. Other WGC volunteer
members as well as the principal and teachers also assisted in organizing the event. The WGC Youth Contest Chairman talked about
the Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl National Garden Club youth poster contests. She then introduced the Florida Forest Rangers who briefly talked to the students about our job and responsibility in preventing
wildfires. They gave a 15 minute PowerPoint Presentation about the true story of the little bear cub who became known as Smokey Bear in
an interesting way to teach the children how to prevent wildfires and protect our environment. The children were especially excited to see the “real” Smokey Bear, who turned 70 years old this year; he came
to the event to meet and greet the students. Smokey Bear gives a “High 5”
As a reward for the students’ participation in the Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contests, the winners sprayed the
pumper from the forest rangers real pumper truck, received participation certificates and Smokey Bear wrist bands. We saw
the educational value of this program from the excitement and participation exhibited by the students. Their beautiful and creative artwork posters that were entered in the contest showed
us that our mission and goals were met.

toys galore to be given to the Literacy Coalition in Belle Glade. Some WGC folks
were dressed for the occasion in their best resort and holiday finery while Connie Kilgore took the biggest prize for her “bare
it all” bikini! Ya gotta love her!

Holiday Lighted Glass Bloc Table Decorations
On Tuesday, November 11th a number of members joined in the Craft Class at Fire Station 30 to
make some fabulous holiday designs for either Christmas, Hanukkah or Thanksgiving out of glass blocs and various materials such as fall foliage & berries, and holiday bobbles, pine cones, etc. It goes without saying, our members…they certainly are artistic and very creative. Each
project was equally beautiful and all had a special personality. Wish we could print all the pictures in this newsletter.

FLORAL DESIGN CLASSES
DESIGNING WITH HOUSEHOLD TREASURES By Bernice Correra and Jayne Kiesewetter, Co-chairs
Pause and imagine that in the middle of the holiday season, December 15th, when your purse is filled with lists of things to do,
that you relax and enjoy yourself for a few hours. Well, this is what happened at the Floral Design class for 16 participants. Instructors Chris Biscoglio and Susan Hillson created a relaxing atmosphere
while we went to work on our floral ring centerpieces. The room fell silent as each person totally lost herself in creating her own design.
Chris and Susan gently nudged us along with helpful tips (like how to make bows) as well as principles of design such that we walked
out the door with a feeling of accomplishment and pride, and yes, maybe even a sense that I
have some creative talent in me, as one person remarked afterward. In short, it was a joy, and all the more reason to look forward to the next two classes on Tuesday, January 27th, and
Wednesday, February 25th. If you’ve been on the fence about signing up, maybe now’s the time to contact Jayne Kiesewetter at [email protected] and get your name on the wait list.

Many thanks to all the folks who donate the numerous bottle caps. It's important to again mention what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.
ANY CAP CONTAINING ANY METAL: beer caps, aluminum pull tabs, sprayers and pumps (metal springs inside), metal coated plastic caps, Ensure or Pediasure caps, Ragu sauce caps,
corks, jelly jar lids, and pickle lids are all unacceptable.
Also unacceptable:
Any plastic cap that crunches when bent such as fast-food restaurant drink lids, clear hard plastics like lucite, or any solid hard cap like those found on cosmetic bottles.
Acceptable caps include any cap or lid that is all plastic, i.e.: bottle caps.
Paper inserts and any foreign materials must be removed. Examples of good plastic caps are from laundry detergents, beverages, toothpaste, shampoo, spray paint, tennis ball can lids, cream cheese and ice cream lids, medicines (must have paper liner removed) and so many
others. Look in your pantry, under your sink, and in your garage for other types of plastic caps you may not have considered.
