WHAT IS A LIBRARY?

A place in which information resources, such as books, serials/periodicals, print and non print materials are kept.

Its main purpose is to support instruction and research.

GENERAL REFERENCES (dictionaries, almanac, indexes, yearbooks, encyclopedias, atlases, gazetteers, bibliographies, directories,

biographical dictionaries)

Dictionaries - A reference book containing an alphabetical list of words, with information given for each word, usually including meaning, pronunciation, and etymology.

Encyclopedias - Reference work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or that treats a particular branch of knowledge comprehensively.

Geographical references - are described as tools that provide information about places and include atlases, maps, gazetteers, and guide books.

Biographical dictionaries - contain biographical sketches or the factual information about the lives of notable persons arranged alphabetically by surname.

Directories - are lists of names of persons, organizations usually arranged in alphabetical order which provide information such as addresses, telephone numbers, etc. of individual organizations or institutions.

Yearbooks and almanacs - a yearbook is an annual compendium of data and statistics of a given year, while the almanac is an annual publication of statistics and other information which will inevitably cover material of previous years.

Bibliographies - are lists of books and other materials of a particular author, printer or country, or of those dealing with any particular theme; the literature of a subject.

Indexes - are detailed and systematically arranged lists of names, terms, topics, or other items with exact page or other reference about each item which enable one to be identified and traced.

Manuals - are reference sources that provide instructions for doing any activity.

Handbooks - are handy reference sources that provide miscellaneous information about a specific area of interest or topic.

Abstracts - are extended index which provide not only bibliographic citations but also summary of the contents of the document.

Government publications - are good sources of information with regard to the organization and administration of our government, its operations and activities. These materials also provide statistical information.

Filipiniana Books – books that are being produced by a Filipino author. Publication that is about the Philippines and is being published and printed in the Philippines is also a Filipiniana.

General Circulation

General Circulation Books – Usually a collection of books that pertains to the different area of subjects. These books can be circulated.

FICTION - literary work with which the content is produced by the imagination and is not necessarily based on facts.

NON-FICTION – is an account or representation of a subject which is based on facts.

Serials / Periodicals - are publications which appear in successive parts of numbers usually at regular intervals with indefinite appearance. (e.g. journals, magazines, newspapers)

Journals - a periodical presenting articles on a particular subject: a medical journal.

Magazines - Publication issued periodically, containing miscellaneous editorial pieces, such as articles, short stories, interviews, photographic essays, or poems, of either a specific or general nature.

Newspapers - A publication, usually issued daily or weekly,

containing current news, editorials, feature articles, and usually advertising.

The Card Catalog, with several sliding drawers and situated at the most visible part of the library, contains the records of all books inside the library

PARTS OF THE BOOK

Binding - The binding holds the leaves of the book together, protects them, and make them easy to handle.

Spine - is the binding edge of the book and caries the title, the author’s name, the publisher, and the call number if it is a library book.

Endpapers – are pasted to the covers to make them stronger; they may carry useful information, such as tables, maps, graphs, and rules.

Flyleaves – are blank pages next to he end papers; they are the first and last leaves in the book.

Half-title page – gives a brief title of the book and the series title if the book belongs to a series

Frontispiece – is an illustration relating to the subject matter of the book; its precede the title page

Title page – is the chief source of information Copyright page – the back (verso) of the title

page and gives the date of copyright and copyright owners.

Dedication page – follows the title page and bears the name or names of the person or persons to whom the author dedicates the book.

Preface – introduces the author to the reader and gives his or her reasons for writing the book; it indicates those for whom the book is intended, acknowledges for assistance, as well as any special features.

Table of content - is a list of the chapters of the book with page numbers; it may be so detailed that it serves as an outline of the book.

Introduction - describes the general subject matter and plan of the book.

Text- the text is made of the numbered chapters and constitutes the main body of the book.

Appendix- contains material referred to , but not explained, in the text.

Bibliography- may be a list of a book, articles, and other materials, which the author has used in writing the book, or it may a list of materials recommended for further reading.

Glossary- is a section, which lists and explains all technical or foreign words not explain in the body of the book.

Index- is a list of the topics discussed in the text, arranged alphabetically with page references. An index may have subdivisions of the topics and cross references.

LIBRARY SERVICES

Circulation Service – Service in the library wherein students and faculty are allowed to borrow books.

Reference Service – One of the services in the library that provide updated information to all library clientele (e.g. current awareness, answering queries, et al.)

Internet Service – Provide additional information other than information found in books.
