A huge welcome to the first edition of The Basingstoke Central.

You, the reader, are very important to us and our first editorial is a plea to hear from the public as to what you want to see within our newsletter. The Basingstoke Central would like to hear from local businesses who want to spread the word about what they do best, charities who need to raise awareness, individuals with an engaging story they wish to share or anyone hosting a local event, whatever its nature.

We would love to hear from the local communities around Basingstoke.

Currently our newsletter goes out to 6,000 homes quarterly in the RG21 region of Basingstoke as well as being found in many shops. We are also compiling an email list of readers who prefer our ‘green’ approach and receive an electronic copy in their inbox (see details below).

It’s our goal to tailor the content to what our readers want and hopefully expand and grow the newsletter to a wider audience in Basingstoke.

BaSINgSTokE’S lEaDINg rolEBasingstoke sits very much in the middle of enterprise M3, the Local enterprise Partnerships (LePs) reflecting the leading role that it played in establishing a LeP for this area, long before it was decided that LePs would cover all of england.

In the two years that it has been established enterprise M3 has been responding to increasing responsibilities placed on it by government.

It led a response to identify the highway pinch points across its area - one result of which is that improvements to the Black dam roundabout will be started later this year.

wHaT IS a lEps?Local enterprise Partnerships (LePs) were established by this government as part of their localism agenda and there are now 39 of them covering all of england. They are partnerships between the private and public (and not for profit) sectors whose remit is to promote enterprise and economic growth across their area.

covEragEThe enterprise M3 area stretches 75 miles through Hampshire and Surrey, from rural communities in the new Forest to the perimeter of Heathrow Airport.

enterprise M3 was given £22m by government to advance projects that will stimulate economic growth and housing. So far this fund has been used to support projects in Woking, Guildford, Farnham, Aldershot and rural superfast broadband across the area - more projects will be announced in the next few months.

enterprise M3 is clear that it must remain as responsive as possible to the needs of business in its area. BUSINESS UPDATE

Hawk-EYE To BE USED IN THE prEmIEr lEagUEIt has been confirmed that Hawk-Eye, a company based at Sony on the Viables estate, had beaten off competition to provide goal-line technology to football’s Barclays Premier League.

At the start of the next football season, the technology systems will be used across the 20 clubs and all 380 Barclays Premier League matches. Hawk-eye uses cameras to track the exact location of the ball, with seven cameras are used per goal-line. The cameras inform referees when the ball has crossed the goal-line using a vibration and a signal to the officials’ watches within one second.

First developed in 1999, Hawk-eye Innovations was acquired by Sony in 2011 and employs around 50 people in Basingstoke.

Hawk-eye is one of the leading vision processing companies in sports and has revolutionised a variety of sports such as tennis, golf and snooker, including major events like Wimbledon and the Cricket World Cup.

SUmmEr opENINg oN coUrSE For SkYDIvErSThe new indoor skydiving centre located in the Basingstoke Leisure Park is progressing well.

Steel work at the front of the building is almost complete, where two ski slopes, a dry surfing simulator and racing car simulators and a coffee shop will be housed. electrical and mechanical work is expected to commence within the complex soon.

Airkix, the company building the £6 million facility, said the project was on target to open to the public in summer 2013. The complex will be one of only three indoor Airkix skydiving centres in the UK – the others are based in Milton Keynes and Manchester.

rEcorD NUmBEr oF STarT-UpS IN BaSINgSTokE2012 saw a record number of company formations in Basingstoke suggesting the area is becoming a hub for business start-ups. numbers have been steadily rising in Basingstoke area since the recession hit back in 2008.

new research from duport.co.uk shows there were 834 new companies formed last year - more than any other year on record for the area.

Factors such as proximity to London, town centre regeneration and relatively cheap business accommodation have attracted both huge and new companies to Basingstoke.

Another factor attracting start-ups is the enterprise M3 (see page 4), which has government funding available for Hampshire businesses.

B&m STorE opENS one of the country’s fastest growing retailers has opened for business on Worting Road, next to Morrisons supermarket – providing employment for more than 70 people. B&M Homestore has been opening an average of one new store every week and had been waiting for an opportunity to build in Basingstoke for three years.

Is The Soldiers Return Public House due to reopen its doors? The 150 year old building situated on Upper Sherbourne Road in Basingstoke has been closed for the last year after the owners, The Wellington Pub Company, attempting to gain planning permission to knock the building down and use the plot to build flats.

Following a 91 person signed petition and the backing of the Basingstoke Heritage Society, Basingstoke and deane Council decided against the application. The building has been left dormant and empty, gradually deteriorating over the last year with unsightly security screens attached.

The pub is now due a new lease of life having been taken over by duncan Carter (The Basingstoke Centrals co-owner) and his family including Sally and Kevin dinham and his partner Sam dinham.

We asked duncan to talk to us about his plans for the pub. duncan has stated that a large refurbishment will be taking place inside and out to bring it back up to date and revive the pub back to a community hub.

“The pub is a large building and allows us to incorporate three different pub experiences - a comfy adult style room including sofas and log burners, a restaurant area suitable for families with children and a sports room with darts board, pool table and TV’s showing Sky Sports.”

We are told the pub will have a very english theme taken through onto the menu, which duncan described as a slightly innovative but traditional homemade pub grub. The pub opening is planned for May/June when the owners intend to host a weekend-long opening party - so look out for that date!

Duration and temporary traffic arrangementsThe works start in mid-April 2013 and we expect them to be completed by the end of november 2013. During this time a one-way traffic system will operate from Chapel Hill Roundabout to Victory Roundabout.

A diversion route with prominent signage will be in operation for all traffic headed for the Malls and Anvil car parks. This will bring drivers in from the north along Brunel Road, Houndmills Road, Kingsclere Road and Chapel Hill.

Access to the station car parks to the north of the rail station will be via the eastrop roundabout. The one-way system will let drivers exit from these car parks towards the west via Alencon Link as normal.

Bus access to the interchange will not be affected and buses will reach the rail station interchange from the east only during this time.

LOCAL NEWS

A new exhibition at The Vyne, now owned by the national Trust, investigates whether a cursed Roman ring, found at an archaeological site in Silchester, inspired Tolkien to write the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

The ring bears the inscription, in Latin, “Senicianus live well in God”. Tolkein was researching the story of the curse of a Roman ring for two years before starting Bilbo Baggins’ tale.

For many years, the ring has lay almost forgotten in a corner of the Library.

It is now on display with a first edition of The Hobbit and a copy of the curse. The exhibition also contains memorabilia from The Tolkien Society's own archive.

The idea of having a railway station at Chineham has long been discussed but now it has recently been included in a list of transport projects for Hampshire.

Situated along the Basingstoke to Reading line, the estimated cost of £7m has proved a stumbling block in the past. However, plans have progress as a recent stated that the station “would provide access to Chineham Business Park and proposed new areas of growth”.

other proposals include a link road to the north of the Taylors Farm development that would provide access to the business park and the proposed railway station.

other schemes included in the list are improvements to junctions at roundabouts on the A30, including Brighton Hill Roundabout and Kempshott Roundabout, on the A33 at Chineham, and the A340 north of the A339 Ringway junction.

Camera chain Jessops is currently being fitted-out to start trading again in The Malls. It is anticipated that the Basingstoke store will open soon, employing about 10 staff. The well-known photography chain, went into administration in January. However, the retailer is set to be revitalised after it was bought by dragons’ den entrepreneur Peter Jones.

Jessops, one of Britain’s most historic retailers and iconic British brands, expects to open around 30 stores creating up to 500 jobs nationwide.

This news coincides with the announcement that HMV is to stay in business in Festival Place.

JESSopS SET To rE-opEN ITS DoorS

Basingstoke town centre is to have a breath of new life. new plans have been drawn up following the appointment of a new project co-ordinator. The main focus on these plans are improvements to the Top of the Town and revitalisation of parts of the town centre to make sure they complement the success of Festival Place, The Anvil and the revamped Malls.

Chas Bradfield is the new Basingstoke Town Centre Project Manager at the borough council and has the job of finalising initiatives to improve the Top of the Town area, which have been boosted by the injection of £200,000 of borough council cash to add to the £100,000 High Street Innovation Fund the council got from the Government under the Mary Portas work.

Work on the physical appearance of the area has already started with the refurbishment of seats and the areas around them in Market Place. Proposals for new paving and a scheme for improvements to the public areas are expected to be in place by early summer 2014.

Campaigners are celebrating after an appeal by Tesco to build a new store in Basingstoke has been dismissed. The Government’s planning inspectorate refused the supermarket giants permission to build on the former Smiths Industries site. Tesco was seeking to overturn a decision to refuse planning permission made in July last year by borough planning chiefs.

There was concern raised by local residents that there would be a significant negative impact on the shops in the Brighton Hill district Centre.

rIvEr loDDoN pollUTIoN ISSUESThe environment Agency has been monitoring the River Loddon since the end of 2012 and has evidence to demonstrate that water is polluted, excessive phosphate levels mean that the river fails to meet the quality standards expected under the european Water Framework directive.

Phosphate pollution damages the animal and plant life and the continuing problem has a bearing on housing levels in the Basingstoke area. Water supply, and the availability of water to deal with sewage are hugely important in determining how many houses can be built.

Calls have been made for a proper solution to the river pollution since 2007.

Around 2,000 people turned up to protest in opposition to nuclear weapons being onsite at AWe. The protest was carried out on 1 April, lasted two hours and was peaceful.

coNcEpT: oNwarDS aND UpwarDS

not only have they nearly 60,000 Twitter followers and a growing online fanbase of ‘Connies’, but Concept have just performed at their first sell-out home headline concert at The Haymarket this April.

We’ve been given full access to the band who are currently Basingstoke’s hottest music prospect. The band lineup consists of five local lads - Karim Newton, Ben Selley, Matt Goodenough, Scott dicks and nathan Gittens.

Do you consider yourself a boy band? Ben: no, we are an acoustic group! our sound is a blend of many genres and styles. Scott: I have no problem with people saying we’re a boyband, but I think there is more to us then just five boys.

You have a large and growing number of fans. Are most of them a) lovely b) passionate or c) crazy? Matt: our fans are all three! Lovely, crazy and extremely passionate. The thing that I love about our fans is how loyal they are. Karim: Well the craziest thing a fan has ever asked me to do is write out their tattoo!

How did you guys get to know each other? Nathan: Well we’ve all (apart from Karim) played football since we were kids. Matt: We played football since we were 5, and Karim went to my secondary school so we all knew each other really well when the band started up.

What’s the hardest thing about being in a band? Karim: Finding time off and organising ourselves is tough because we all either have college or work to contend with. Nathan: Having to learn so much, so quickly like sound and performance techniques and how the music industry works. But every day is a school day as they say and we are loving it!

If you had to be another member of the band, who would it be and why? Ben: I would be Matt, because he dances really well and I would love to be able to dance! Matt: I would like to be Ben because I would love to know what his view is like, because he’s so tall and I would touch my own hair a lot because it feels amazing!

What are some of your passions outside of music? Nathan: We’re all big football fans. Scott: I’m a massive Liverpool fan! Karim: Reading. I love being able to learn about things that interest me so I love buying books and learning something new.

What was the last song that stopped you in your tracks? Matt: I’ve rekindled a passion for Busted at the moment and I keep playing ‘Sleeping with the light on’ because I can’t stop singing it. Ben: ‘don’t say you love me’ by Gabrielle Aplin - I love this song. I like chilling out to Charlie Simpson and Ben Howard as well.

Give us a fact your fans might not know. Scott: Me and Matt played for north Hampshire cricket when we were eleven!

You‘ve just sold out your first major gig in your home town. What is best about Basingstoke? Karim: It’s home. My dreams were born here, my future has started here. Scott: Just knowing that it’s home. We have so many memories here as we’ve all lived here since we were young, no other place will hold as many memories.

SENSaTIoNal vISIoNLosing your vision must be scary, turning your life upside down. In July last year Sam Appleton, a 20 year carpenter, lost most of his vision to a very rare disease of the eye called Leber’s Hereditary optic neuropathy (LHon) within months.

It began when Sam was having difficulty in seeing the finer detail in his work, so he went to his opticians who advised he seek specialist advise. After many tests Sam was diagnosed with LHon but by this point reading, driving and recognising faces was impossible.

The rapidly progressive symptoms begin with a sudden, painless loss of central vision. Figuring out what to do when it happened was confusing, with many issues to address all at once. Unfortunately he had to leave his job due to Health and Safety requirements on building sites and also lost his driving licence.

Sam though, has been determined that this would not effect the way he lives his life. In September 2012 he attended BCoT, and with his family’s continued support soon turned his hand to become a trained Masseur, where he has achieved high recognition. Whilst waiting for his qualifications, he has started his own business called “Blind Sensations” with all his current work raising money for the open Sight charity.

Blind Sensations has a bright future with the business growing in a matter of weeks. In just under a month of launching his Facebook page, he has seen a massive influx of followers and bookings. As a result of Sam’s hard work, he is now working with the Halo Hair & Beauty salon in Kempshott and has offered his skills at the recent Tadley youth Council event and the local Spring Psychic Fayre.

Sam is looking forward with the same strength and tenacity as before he become blind.

Is the fear of the number 13 affecting the number of couples wanting to have a 2013 wedding?

Many wedding venues across the county are reporting a drop in bookings this year because couples appear to believe in the myth of the number 13 being ‘unlucky for some’. Local businessman Neil Moss, wedding photographer/owner of Kamper Klicks said ‘We have had a few couples tell us they have postponed their wedding due to superstition this year, but as a result of this our 2014/15 bookings are up, which is a really encouraging sign’.

others, however, believe the downturn in bookings and orders could be for more practical reasons. Tanya Bone of The Favour Box explained ‘We would also put it down to couples saving their pennies this year; many people just don’t have a lot of money to get married at the moment.”

However it could be a money-saving year for couples planning to get married. With venues already discounting weddings held on Friday 13ths, this could offer up some nice savings if the happy couple are brave enough for getting hitched on the unlucky year?

Basingstoke Rugby Club have moved a step closer to a promotion play-off after winning their last 12 matches in a row.

The down Grange club are second in the table but must travel to runaway champions East Grinstead in their final game. They are almost certain to finish as runners-up if they can avoid defeat.

Basingstoke Town Football Club’s aspirations to relocate to a new stadium took a step closer to realisation after plans were agreed with the council.

The scheme would be funded by the sale of the existing Camrose stadium with a retail development being built in its place. The new stadium would be built on council land to the rear of the Hilton Hotel.

As well as a purpose-built, 5,000 capacity stadium the club wants to create an all-weather training pitch at the Costello Technology College and a Multi-Use Games Area for local children.

The Basingstoke Bison suffered heartbreak after a sudden death shoot-out in the play-off semi-finals.

The Bisons were after their first piece of silverware in 13 years after they qualified for the play-offs during their best ever season in the english Premier League.

They lost 5-4 to the Manchester Phoenix who went on to win the final beating the Guildford Flames 5-2.

on new year’s ever 2012 we sadly lost our beautiful baby girl Amelia Ivy at 35 weeks due to a rare chromosomal disorder called edwards Syndrome. We had been told of the possibility of edwards syndrome at 20 weeks and offered a termination. As we had been trying for four years we didn’t want to lose her and we held out hope that she would be ok or that we would be given some time with her. However, sadly she was born asleep weighing 5 pounds 1 ounce and looking absolutely perfect.

Together with our friends who also sadly lost their beautiful baby Bethany at two days old to Strep B in 2010 we are holding a charity night to raise much needed money for both Stillbirth and neonatal death Society (SAndS) and Group B Strep Support (GBSS).

This black tie event will be held on the 11th May 2013 at the Apollo hotel with tickets available for only £35 per person. The evening event will include:
