Definitions

By sustainable we mean

continuously providing the learner with the appropriate information depending on the available sources, the device he/she is using, his/her preferences and particularities, and the context

By information we mean

any content, activity or service which guides the learner through the learning process towards his/her learning goals

Virtual learning environments are getting sophisticated:

Personalization issues

Standards and specifications for interoperability

New architectures based on services

(Open) contents are everywhere

Breaking the producer / consumer barrier

Towards a new semantic of the learning process

VLEs need to provide learners with true learning experiences


Virtual learning environments

Condemned to death if:

not open or proprietary

not standard compliant and interoperable

not service based and extendable

not accessible

not personalizable

Current and future learners are net natives:

technology addicts

multiple identities

all-in-one context: personal, academic, professional


Openness: aspects to take into account

As defined in OLCOS (www.olcos.org):

Technological (what can we do?)

Methodological (how do we do it?)

Legal (can we do it?)

Economical (who will pay for?)

Social (why should we do it?)

No when? question: NOW!

No where? question: EVERYWHERE!


Future trends

Everybody is a lifelong learner

Competence transfer between personal, academic and professional contexts

VLEs will become personal spaces where learners aggregate the elements they need

Semantics will ensure the quality of the learning process
