Time-tabling was the main issue. We have many "station-teaching" interventions at out school. There were a few occasions where boys had to miss their station. Early morning time would be more suitable.

Younger pupils who have just started the programme: Very excited by it. Positive experiences. Enjoy engaging with mentors. Asked every day when they were going reading. Pupil in 2nd class with dyslexia-confidence has improved tremendously, fluency in reading has also improved. Emergent readers have improved visibly. Pupils are very excited about the amount of books they have read.

Many thanks to all the mentors who have volunteered to date. They engaged wonderfully with the pupils and created a lovely atmosphere. Pupils had a hugely positive experience with them and their confidence in themselves and in their ability to read absolutely soared.

We changed our Suas days form Tuesdays and Wednesdays last year to Wednesdays and Thursdays this year and this has impacted on mentor attendance. This year the mentor attendance has been excellent.



The benefits for all our Suas participants have been immense. However for one little girl the impact has been really noticeable. This child would have quite a lot of challenges in her day to day living. Reading in any shape or form would not have been on any priority list for her. To say that she enjoyed her paired reading sessions would be an understatement. She is now a "reader" which she was not, before Suas. She is flying through her class and library readers. She has become particularly fond of the Allen Ahlberg books and is determined to read the whole series! As I said, before participating in Suas, reading for her was a chore but now, reading is a pleasure.

Comments by Norrie Coady: The children engaged in the paired reading with great enthusiasm. The regularity and frequency of the twice weekly one to one, 30 minute session certainly resulted in improved reading fluency and confidence for each child. The fact that the child engaged in positive, one to one conversation with a new adult in their lives, whom they felt was there especially for them, added to the positive reading experience for the child. Children who would normally be reluctant to read, afraid that they might be ridiculed for their reading difficulties.


Child told mentor-will probably leave school and have a few kids like my mam and info like that is very important for teacher to pick up on and build in little exercises on CSPHE or subtly make changes to approach & teaching with child.

Comments: I think the programme is extremely well organised and runs fluidly due to all the people in the background. The mentors are well prepared and understand the importance of consistency in terms of time keeping and personnel. They never let the students down once over the 8 weeks.

There were none, this may be due to the fact that this is our 3rd year engaged in the programme and we have resolved glitches that may have been present previously.



As I mentioned earlier the children who attended the Suas initiative seem to be more willing than the rest of the class to read aloud. One student has become visibly confident about reading. More confidence about reading and reading all the time. Overall a more positive attitude towards reading amongst the participants.

This scheme is fantastic and we welcome any intervention on the whole. Unfortunately some teachers found it too disruptive. Timetables meant some boys missed PE/Arts etc, something that will always be an issue

What we were totally amazed and delighted with was that each class teacher commented on how the participants interaction in class had improved. They contributed to discussions and attempted to answer questions in a very positive manner. Score wise, their spellings showed the greatest improvement. One of our 5th year participants was reluctant to take part. We asked her to try it for one session. She was thrilled with the experience and she has become a much happier outgoing pupil since. It was also a privilege to watch how the adults "gelled" with the pupils. They were professional and respectful at all times but they really praised and encouraged the pupils. A child who struggles with reading is rarely praised but during the programme they started each day with 30 mins of praise in their systems!


It was a fantastically well run and organised programme. A credit to Suas and Abtran

Comments: The mentors attendance was very poor. On average four mentors showed up out of six. i felt that this absenteeism affected the bonding with the children, and had a direct impact on the childrens confidence.

Overall the programme was very successful and the girls enjoyed the sessions. My only complaint would be the attendance of the mentors. I had to fill in every week as a mentor was missing. The children need consistency in order to build up their confidence with reading but also more importantly a bond with their mentor.



One girl who attended the Wednesday sessions would be a very quiet and withdrawn child. As the weeks progressed I could see her confidence growing and really began to enjoy reading with her mentor.


Overall a very worthwhile programme. The girls enjoyed it immensely. Again I would like to highlight the importance of the mentor attendance

After a day or two of working on the programme it would have been good to have somebody touch base with us/mentors. Mentors were great but I think it may be easier to recruit volunteers rather than companies, but I appreciate it can be difficult to source volunteers

We were abit confused as to the different coloured sheets for testing so we would be interested to know the results. anecdotally teachers have said some of the students have improved in literacy in their classroom

There was a shortage of mentors during our sessions. Very often we had four readers for a class of 19 students. Many of our students were good readers but it still could have worked better for us if we had a reader for the majority of the students. The poorer readers did not like to be singled our and given a reader





we have been involved with paired reading with suas for three or four years. In the past there was a plentiful of mentors. This past year the shortage of mentors was problematic for us. It is a great programme and it works very well but it does need to be structured for our students for it to be a success. If I had known in advance we would only have three mentors i could have selected the students for paired reading in advance. There was often confusion during the session when there was only a few students with readers

Just the issue of mentor attendance in Term 2 which has been dealt with by phone, I think it related to the timing of volunteering



One boy in particular was reluctant to engage with mentor and was very self conscious but after two sessions was participating readily. Praise goes to the mentors who were all enthusiastic, positive, helpful and skilled in helping the pupils with their homework

Children really enjoyed - I could hear good chats between mentor and children about their dogs, cats rabbits, good fun stories that you would not normally have in the classroom
