The ACUHO-I STARS College is a three-

day experience that blends large group

presentations, interactive activities, roleplay

situations, self-evaluation, and small

mentoring groups. The networking and

opportunities continue after the conference

with the opportunity for participants to get

involved in discussion lists, marketing of the

program, and STARS College volunteerism,

as well as continuation of newly cultivated

relationships. Each STARS participant also has an “on-

campus mentor,” who will play a vital role in

continued mentoring and exposure to the

field after the event. The entire experience is

highly interactive and promotes student

affairs and the college and university

housing profession as a viable career option.

oAttendees have the opportunity to attend the ACUHO-I

Annual Conference & Exposition at a reduced cost. This

fee includes registration and conference meal package, and

requires working some volunteer hours. However, it does not

include lodging--conference hotel reservations must be made

individually.oWhy stay? You can be a part of more than 160 sessions and

roundtables, the opening and closing events, and everything

else that makes the annual conference the largest

professional development opportunity for housing

professionals. o“I am extremely happy that I stayed. First, I was able to spend

more time with some of the STARS so that was a definite plus.

Second, It was great to be among so many professionals in the

career we hope to be a part of. Everyone was so kind and

welcoming towards us and they truly made us feel like STARS

while we were there.” — Rena Gore, Rutgers University –

Newarko

“I really enjoyed attending and moderating the presentations. I

found out about programs offered by Universities that I had

never even considered before, and I learned about lots of

great ideas for housing.” — Tamarah Dixon, University of

Central Missourio“[Staying for the conference] allows for lots more

opportunities to network with people who have already

established themselves in the field. You might meet people at

your volunteer hours, or at sessions, or you may be introduced

to someone by a STARS faculty member. It doesn't matter

how it happened but these people will just be more resources

for you in the future.” — Scott Connerley, University of

Northern IowaoIf you are considering staying for ACE, you are encouraged to

solicit registration fee assistance from your campus’ housing

department, student government, and other possible

contributors.

o 2003, Bradley Bennett: Before STARS I

never really knew all of the opportunities

that were out there for people who are

interested in to working in the field of

Higher Education and Student Personnel.

The Mentors really helped guide all of us

in the right direction in to what to look for

in a Graduate Program, Assistantships,

First Full Time Jobs, and still think about

how that will all help guide us to moving

up the career ladder.

o 2004, Susan Berry: To this day, I still

share with others about my STARS

experience. I truly believe my STARS

experience helped me lay the foundation

for my career in housing. I am very

invested in my professional development

in ACUHO as well as investing in the

organization. I hope one day to be a

faculty member for the STARS college and

to help mentor rising young professionals

such as I was mentor by amazing

professionals in our field!

o 2005, Nicholas Tereck: STARS College

definitely opens your eyes to the

possibilities of careers in housing and

student affairs. It gives you’re a realistic

look at the people who work in the field

and the jobs that they do. It was definitely

instrumental in solidifying my decision to

go into higher ed and student affairs,

specifically in residence life.

o 2006, Christine Moran: I really enjoyed

STARS college experience. I think that it

gave me the tools to not only explore the

profession of student affairs, but it also

gave me key points in how to interview for

a teaching position and really helped me

in my education career.

o 2007, Alexis Laughhunn: My STARS

experience is one that will last me a

lifetime. Although I ended up on another

path, the tools and education I gained

while at STARS has helped me in all

aspects of my life. I feel that it better

prepared me with interviews, my ability to

network with others, ways to approach

different situations at work, and my self-

esteem.o 2008, Anna Marie Costa: I truly

believe the experience from STARS helped

me in every part of the Graduate process.

It helped me understand and know what I

was looking for, helped me with the tools I

needed to apply, helped me interview, and

helped me with a position. There is no

doubt in my mind that they experience,

knowledge, and relationships I have

gained from STARS will help me in my

professional future.

o 2010, Cody Kalina: STARS

College was an opportunity for me

to meet professionals in Housing

and Residential Life and Student

Affairs. After spending a wonderful

weekend learning about the impact

professionals have on students in

the field and learning about how to

get started in the field I knew I was

making the right decision by

pursuing Higher Education Student

Affairs for a career.o 2011, Brandon Meyers: Thank

you STARS College!! I had a

wonderful experience meeting

people equally as interested in

Student Affairs as I was. I hope to

continue the experience for years to

come and I feel like this really set

the bar that much higher for me. I'm

ready for the challenge and I hope

my new lifelong friends will join me!

THANK YOU!!
