THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads “Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) con-nects this week’s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that

they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacrifice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Communion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacri-fice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably pre-pared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.” Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. UPCOMING SPECIAL MASSES Our parish is proud to have two transitional deacons, Rev. Mr. Abel Ruiz and Rev. Mr. Praveen Lakkisetti who claim St. Matthew as their own parish. Both assisted with our RCIA ministry. Abel has attended Bible Study classes here; Praveen re-cently transferred from the Diocese of San Angelo but considers his closest ties to our parish. You may have been at a Mass where Deacon Abel preached or assisted since he is assigned here temporarily as a deacon. Deacon Praveen is currently assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Selma where he is completing his Internship Year. Both will be ordained priests for our Archdiocese on Saturday, May 20th along with two others who will also serve in our Archdi-ocese. We are happy to share that Deacon Abel will have his first Mass as a priest at the 9:15 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 21st at our parish. Because of this we will move the 11:15 a.m. Mass to the school cafeteria that day and use the MFC for a reception after his first Mass that all are invited to. Deacon Praveen will have his first Mass at OLPH Parish in Selma but will have a Mass at our parish the following Sunday, May 28th at 11 a.m. His Mass will be followed by a re-ception in our Parish Hall that all are invited to attend as well. Praveen is originally from India and will have a large Mass and reception there. Our parish will be sponsoring Praveen’s recep-tion after his Mass in India which he anticipates having approximately 3,000 persons in attend-ance! If anyone would like to donate to help us defray the cost of this reception, please make a check out to our parish and in the description line print “Priest Reception”. Please pray for Abel and Praveen as they get closer to taking this big step in their lives.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS O Father, you desire all of us to be happy. Stir up the grace of a religious vocation in the hearts of many men and women. Grant to them the willingness and gener-osity to give of themselves, their lives, their time and their talents to the service of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord and Savior, and to His Holy Church. May more men and women go forth as priests, deacons, brothers and sisters to bring the truths of our Catholic faith to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better and love You more... and serving You, be truly happy. Amen.

BUILDING THE FUTURE UPDATE On Friday, April 21st, Fr. Dennis, Jack McClellan our architect and Jason Linahan, representing our Building Committee, presented the design for our Building the Future Project to the Archdiocesan Building Committee. The plans included the architectural renderings of the Gymnasium and Roadway Con-nection from Vance Jackson. We are happy to announce that they were approved. The next step includes the completion of these renderings, another review by our Building Committee, and hopefully a submission to those bidding on the project by the end of May. If we are able to keep on this schedule, the bids will be opened on June 23rd in the Pastoral Center. As traffic worsens on Wurzbach we look forward to having an alternative way to access our parish and school. The gymnasium will allow for our CYO and school volleyball and basketball teams to practice on campus and will open up the McDonald Center which will no longer be used as a gym, for parish meetings and events. Since the school children also needed two rooms reserved for changing, those two rooms in the MFC will also be opened up for parish use once the gym is completed. The Building housing the gyms will also have three meeting rooms. We encourage all parishioners to join in supporting our Building the Future Campaign. One way is to donate to the “Big Give” on May 4th under St. Matthew School. The school has agreed that all proceeds will go to our Building the Future Capital Cam-paign. Thank you for your support.
