PHE daily wagers demand regularisation, stage protestJammu, Apr 22: Demand-ing regularisation of their services, hundreds of daily wage workers of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department in Jammu and Kashmir today held a protest rally and tried to gherao the Civil Secre-tariat here.

However, the protesting PHE workers were stopped by the police before they could proceed to the Sec-retariat. “Many of us have been working as daily wage workers for past more than a decade, but despite assur-ances by successive state governments no step has been taken to regularise our services," said the protestors.

They said the workers have been raising the demand for their regularisation for the past several months but the authorities did not pay heed and they decided to gherao the Civil Secretariat.

They accused the BJP of not keeping their pre-poll promise to redress the grievances of the daily wage PHE workers.

They threatened to intensify their agitation if the government fails to regularise their services.

Police had a tough time controlling the protesting workers from proceeding towards the Civil Secretar-iat and they were stopped near B C Road. "We had to use barbed wires to block the road so as to stop these protesting PHE workers from proceeding towards the Civil Secretariat," a police officer said.

He said elaborate securi-ty arrangements have been put in place to maintain law and order in the city. PTI

Jammu, Apr 22: National Conference General Secre-tary Ali Muhammad Sagar on Friday exhorted cadre to gear up for meeting the challenges of fast changing political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir while Provin-cial President Devender Singh Rana described PDP-BJP Government’s SOS over seeking Ananntag bye-elec-tions postponed as a major sign of panic and frustration due to disenchantment of people.

“Like Bihar, the women of Jammu and Kashmir can become catalyst of change as they constitute over half of the electorate,” Sagar said while addressing a day-long Women Convention of National Conference, orga-nized at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhjavan here by Bimla Luthra, former MLA.

Speaking on the occa-sion, the Provincial Presi-dent Devender Singh Rana termed the decision of Jammu and Kashmir Gov-ernment in getting election to Anantnag assembly Con-stituency, necessitated due to demise of Mufti Moham-med Sayeed, postponed as public acknowledgment of defeat. “The decision is totally political, as the PDP-BJP are seeing writing on

the wall and humiliating defeat on the anvil, in view of public resentment”, he said.

In his presidential address, Additional Gen-eral Secretary Dr Sheikh Mustaffa Kamal referred to path breaking initiatives of National Conference in pro-moting female literacy and carving out a huge role for them in decision making.

Former minister Sakina Itoo also spoke on the occa-sion and exhorted women to come forward and par-ticipate in democratic pro-cess in a big way. She said women have excelled in various fields, especially education and have laid an imprint as good academi-cians, doctors, engineers etc. “Along side men they are playing their useful role in healthy growth of the society”, he added.

Bimla Luthra exuded con-fidence that women workers and office bearers of Nation-al Conference will meet the challenges confronted to the party and steer it to big win in upcoming civic elections.

“Women have proved that they were second to none, provided given oppor-tunities”, she said while lauding party leadership for encouraging women and helping them to play their useful role in politics.
