Messages from Scholarship Recipients to Sponsors

Following are some messages from students to their sponsors, extracted from the“Student Profile Cards” from this year’s scholarship recipients.

In the following message, a student offers gratitude to the sponsor, on behalf of allSri Lankan students, for extending a helping hand to innocent children who attemptto succeed in life in the face of thousands of barriers and difficulties…

The following student joins a bird in singing about the sponsor’s noble humanqualities not only in the spring, but throughout the other seasons as well…

Page 8: Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation

In the following message, a student says that people who value the humanity arerare, but her sponsors are one of them. She finds it difficult to express her feelingsin words and offer her heartfelt gratitude and wish the sponsors a long life.

Letters from our Scholarship Recipients

Following are some extracted portions of letters sent by the scholarship recipientsthis year. These illustrate under what financial and other hardships they haveachieved excellent results in the G.C.E. (O/L) examination and how much theyappreciate your financial support in continuing their studies for the universityentrance (i.e., G.C.E. Advanced Level) examination.

Note: We have removed names and addresses from these letters to maintain theanonymity of the students and their sponsors.

The following letter is from a student in a Samurdhi family (i.e., a family receivingsome minimal financial assistance from the Sri Lankan government, because of theirextreme poverty). After her father had unexpectedly passed away from cancerdisease, the mother is supporting her three children, from the little money earned bycasual labour.

Page 9: Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation

This letter is from a student whose father is currently in prison. Her mother is nowsupporting the family of six by herself. They don’t have electricity and use kerosenelamps. In spite of all these hardships, she had passed the GCE (O/L) exam withexcellent grades! She is thankful and grateful to her sponsor for the financial reliefthe scholarship provides and plans to be a doctor some day in the future…

<… Parts deleted …>

The following letter is from a student in a remote, rural village. His mother is deafsince birth and cannot speak. He has no father, as someone seems to have takenadvantage of his innocent mother and then deserted her.

His dream is to be an engineer some day and cure his mother. He extends his bothhands to the sponsor for help and worships the sponsors’ feet with heartfelt respect.

<…Parts deleted…>

Page 10: Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation

This student’s family of eight is supported solely by the mother with hard physicallabour. His 87-year old grand mother is sick and lives with them. The father cannotdo any physical labour because of a broken leg after an accident. They have noelectricity. After helping the mother, children study using a kerosene lamp. With allthese hardships, he had still passed the GCE (O/L) with 7 A’s!

Page 11: Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation

His determination is to get the maximum advantage of the financial assistance fromthe scholarship and pass the GCE (Advanced Level) examination in 2014 withexcellent results. He is also determined to support children in helpless families someday in the future just as his sponsor and be of service to the country!

When we award scholarships, there are no conditions attached, except that weexpect the students to make the maximum use of the financial assistance tocomplete their high school education successfully and be productive citizens. In theaward letter, however, we request the students not to forget to return the kindnessof their sponsors to another unknown helpless child some day in the future, throughthe SLCSF or some other channel of their choice.

The following letters are examples of how the seeds of generosity and returning thekindness to another human being are now growing, once they were planted in theyoung, fertile minds of these children…

Page 12: Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation

In both letters, students state that they will extend a helping hand to other needychildren, once they complete their education and gainfully employed.

Poems from Students

A poem written by a student to her sponsor… she worships the sponsor for not letting her littledream to be blurred and helping her to smile through the tears…
