Itismypleasuretowelcomeyoutothisexcitingnewchapterinyoureducationandcareerpath.YouareembarkingonacomplexbutrewardingfieldofstudythatwilldevelopbothyourpersonalandprofessionalskillsinordertoprepareyouforastatelicensedpositionasaSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistant(SLPA).Bytheendofthisprogram,youwillhavetheclinicalskillstohelpanyonelearntocommunicate.Youwillexperiencebreakthroughmomentssuchaswhenachildwhohasneverspokenbeforesaystheirfirstwordsinoneofyourtherapysessions,orwhenyoufindyourselfbeingthatonepersontowhomabulliedmiddleschoolchildcanconfideinabouttheirstuttering.Inshort,youwillprovideaninvaluableservicethatcanchangepeople’slivesinbothsmallandbigways.Thissignificantrolethatyouwillplayinyourfutureclients’andtheirfamilies’livescomeswithsignificantresponsibilitiesaswell.AsamemberofthefieldofSpeech-LanguagePathology,youwillbelongtoaprofessionthatpridesitselfonresearch-basedpracticeofassessmentandinterventionforindividualswithcommunicationdisorders.Youwillberesponsibleformaintainingknowledgeandclinicalskillsthatareinformedbyrigorousevidenceandclinicalexpertisetoprovidethebestpossiblecareofyourclientsandconsumers.Asalicensedprofessional,youwillalsoadheretoacodeofethicsthatarespecifictotheSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantoccupation,asmandatedbytheSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantLicensingBoardandtheAmericanSpeech-Language-HearingAssociation.Asyouwilldiscoverinthefirstyearoftheprogram,Speech-LanguagePathologyisinfluencedbyotherhealthandeducationaldisciplines,aswellasfederalandstatepolicies.Inthisprogram,youwillintegrateconceptsfromthefieldsofchildpsychology,childdevelopment,signlanguage,anatomyandphysiology,linguistics,physics,andeducation.Throughacarefullystructuredcurriculum,CerritosCollegeSLPAstudentslearnabouttheprocessofcommunication,disordersofcommunication,andhowtoimplementtreatmentplanseffectively.Inthesecondyearoftheprogram,studentswillexperienceacombinationofdidacticandclinicaltrainingcourses.SLPAcourseasemesterinadditiontoclinicalexperiencecourses.Youwillhavetheopportunitytopracticeyourskillsintwoclinicaland/oreducationalsettingsunderthementorshipofacredentialedSpeech-LanguagePathologistintheLosAngelesandOrangeCountyregions.StudentswhosuccessfullycompleteboththeacademicandclinicalportionsoftheprogramwillgraduatewithanAssociateofArtsdegreeinSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistingandbeeligibleforstatelicensurewiththeSpeech-LanguagePathologyandAudiologyLicensingBoard(www.speechandhearing.ca.gov).ThishandbookisdesignedtoorientyoutotherequirementsoftheSLPAfieldandtheCerritosProgram.Reviewitcarefullyandkeepiteasilyaccessibleasyougothroughthedifferentstagesoftheprogramasyouwillneedtoreferbacktovarioussectionsasyouprogress.Bestofluckonthisnewendeavor,Sincerely,

TheCerritosCommunityCollegeSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantProgramwasdevelopedthroughthecollaborativeeffortsofJudyMontgomery(LeadConsultantfortheGoldenSLPAProject),EllenHorvath(SLP),ElsaBrizzi(LACOEHeadstart)andJenineNolan(HealthOccupationsDean)beginningin1999andcomingtofruitionin2001asastate-accreditedSLPAprogram,asrecognizedbytheSpeech-LanguagePathologyandAudiologyBoardofCalifornia.

PROGRAMSTATEMENT
TheCerritosCollegeSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistant(SLPA)Program,accreditedbytheCaliforniaSpeech-LanguagePathologyandAudiologyLicensingBoard(SLPAB),offersanopportunitytoprepareforacareerinspeech-languagepathologythroughmasteryofaspecificbodyofknowledgeandskills.StudentswhowishtoapplyforCaliforniastatelicensureasaSLPAmustmeettherequirementsoftheSLPAprogramandthegeneraleducationrequirementsforanAssociateofArtsdegree.

APPLICATIONTOTHEPROGRAM
I.AdmissionandSelectionProcedures
TheCerritosCollegeSLPAprogramhasanopenenrollmentpolicy.AllstudentswhohaveenrolledinCerritosCollegeandcompletedtherequiredassessmentproceduresasmandatedbythecollegeareeligibletobegintheSLPAcourseofstudy.Thereisnoselectionprocedureinanopenenrollmentpolicy,andallstudentswhowishtopursuetheSLPAmajormustpassallrequiredcoursesandcomplywithdepartmentalandcollegepoliciesinordertocompletetheAssociateofArt’sdegreeinSLPA.ItisrecommendedthatallstudentsconsideringthismajorshouldattendaSLPAorientationandmeetwithaHealthOccupationscounselorpriortobeginningtheprogramtomakeaplanofstudy.Thisplanshouldbere-evaluatedatleastonceayearandpriortothegraduatingsemester.
II.AttritionandRetentionofStudents
TheSLPADepartmentstrivestorecruitandretainadiversestudentpopulation.ItisthephilosophyoftheSLPAprogramthatretentionofstudentsrequiresinstructionthatmeetstheneedsoftheadultlearner,whichincludesdisseminatinginformationinamannerthatsuitsvarioustypesoflearning(e.g.,kinesthetic,auditory,visual,interpersonal).Studentswhomaybeexperiencingacademicchallengesaregivenadditionalsupportbythecourseinstructor,accesstocampusresourcessuchastheStudentSuccessCenterforadditionalsupportormaybereferredtotheDisabledStudentProgramsandServicesCenter.Annually,theratesofstudentsuccess,completion,andretentionaresummarizedintheSLPADepartment’sAnnualPlan.TheseratesandSLOoutcomesprovideinformationthatshapesbothshorttermandlongtermgoalplanningfortheSLPADepartment.
III.MeasurementofStudentAchievements
StudentsuccessismeasuredthroughavarietyofmodalitiesincludingassessmentofStudentLearningOutcomesurveys,directassessmentthroughsummativeassessmentssuchasobservation/evaluationofclinicalbehaviors,studentprojectsandpresentations,andexaminations.
ScholarshipandPromotion
Studentswhoperformatapassinggradeof“C”orhigher,asdeterminedbythegradingscaleofeachcourserequiredintheAAdegreeandSLPAprogram,willbeeligibleforenrollmentinthesubsequentcourse(s).Studentsareexpectedtomaintainresponsibilityfortheirstudiesandutilizeresourcesavailableoncampustosupporttheirlearning.

TherequiredcoursesoftheSLPAprogrammaybecompletedoverafoursemesterperioddependingonwhetherthestudentisabletoattendonafull-timeorpart-timebasis.CoursesinChildDevelopment,SignLanguage,andAnatomyandPhysiologyareintegratedintothecoursesequenceandshouldbetakenaccordingtotherecommendedSLPAsequence.Inaddition,generaleducationcoursesarerequiredforcompletionoftheAssociateofArtsDegreeinSLPA.SomestudentsmayneedtotakeadditionalcoursestomeetEnglish,readingandmathematicsrequirements.ThetotallengthoftimetoobtaintheAssociateofArtsdegreedependsonthestudent’senrollmentincoursesandacademicprogress.EachstudentshouldconsultaHealthOccupationscounselortomonitortheirprogresstowardstheAssociateofArtsdegreeonanannualbasis.

Duringthefourcoresemesters,studentsarerequiredtopayfortextbooksandworkbooks(approximately$800)andmaybechargedlabfees,whicharesubjecttochange.Studentsareresponsiblefortheirownlivingarrangements,CPRcertification,healthandbackgroundcheckfees,andtransportationtoclinicalagencies.TheapplicationfeeforlicensureasaSLPAtothestatelicensingboardis$50.00.
COURSESEQUENCE&COMPLETIONREQUIREMENTS
ThechartbelowliststherequiredcoursesandsequenceofcoursesintheSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantProgram.AllstudentswhowishtobeeligibleforstatelicensuremustcompleteanAssociateofArtsdegreeintheSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantProgramandsuccessfullyobtainaminimumof70hoursofclinicalexperienceunderthesupervisionofastatelicensedSpeech-LanguagePathologist.
StudentsmustreviewtheTechnicalStandardsfortheSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistantoccupation(AppendixA)sotheyareawareofthementalandphysicalrequirementsofthejob.Inaddition,studentswillberequiredtoadheretotheAmericanSpeech-Language-HearingAssociation’s(ASHA)CodeofEthicsregardingclinicalpractice(AppendixB).AlthoughASHAdoesnotgrantlicensesorcertificatestoSLPAsatthistime,ASHAisthenationalorganizationforallspeech-languageclinicians(includingSLPAs)andSLPAsareexpectedtoabidebythosepoliciesandprocedures.
StudentspursuinganAssociateofArtsdegreeinSpeech-LanguagePathologyAssistingmustsuccessfullycompletetherequirementsofPlanA,B,orCaslistedinthegeneralcatalog.Belowisalistoftherequiredcoursesintheprogramtobetakeninthefollowingsequence:

FIELDWORKPLACEMENT/CLINICALEXPERIENCE
ClinicaltrainingasaSLPArepresentsamajorcomponentofthelearningexperienceintheprogramandmustbesuccessfullyobtainedinordertograduatefromtheprogramandapplyforstatelicensure.TheCaliforniastateSLPAHADBoardrequiresaminimumof15observationhoursandproofof70clinicalhoursasapartoftheSLPAlicense.TheClinicalExperiencecoursesarevoluntaryinternships.NocompensationisprovidedforthestudentorsupervisingSpeech-LanguagePathologist.

Atthebeginningofeachcourse(SLP241&246),studentswillattendthefirsteveningofthecourseandsubmitthefollowingpaperworktobeconsideredforenrollment:

B.FieldPlacementAttendance:

• Thestudentmustattendtheirfieldplacementforthedurationofthesemesterandcompleteallclinicalhourstheweekbeforefinals.Studentsareresponsibleforkeepingtrackoftheirhoursandcommunicatingwiththesupervisorandinstructoriftheyfeelthattheyarenotgettingenoughhourson-siteinatimelymannersothattheyhavesufficienthourspriortofinalsweekinordertopassthecourse.

• ThesupervisingSLPMUSTinitialthecalendarinagreementwiththestudent,andacopywillbegiventothecourseinstructorwithinaweekofthestudentbeginningtheirfieldplacement(eitherinclassorbydroppingitoffintheinstructor’scampusmailbox,WHICHEVERISSOONER).Thesupervisorshouldhavetheirowncopyofthecalendarandthestudentshouldkeeptheircalendarintheirportfolio,whichtravelswiththestudenttoandfromtheclinical/educationalsite.
• Reportingabsencestosupervisorandcourseinstructor:Intheunlikelyeventthatastudentneedstobeabsentfromtheirfieldplacementforahalforfullday,studentsareMANDATEDtocontactthesupervisorANDcourseinstructorassoonaspossibleabouttheimpendingabsenceviatelephone,email,and/ortext.Becausethisisapartofthestudent’srecordofattendance,studentswhodonotcommunicatewithboththesupervisorandinstructorby9amofthedayitoccurredwillnotreceivepointsforthatlogsheet.
• Ifthesupervisorcancelsaday,studentsareREQUIREDtoemailtheinstructorofanycanceleddaysbythesupervisorimmediately.Becausethisispartofthestudent’srecordofattendance,studentswhodonotemailtheinstructorandcopythesupervisorontheemailby9amofthedayitoccurredwillhavetheirgradedroppedby25points.
• Forthefieldplacementportionofthiscourse,studentsarenotpermittedtomissmorethan10%oftheestimatedhourson-site(asdesignatedintheircalendar)foranyreason.Forexample,ifastudentisscheduledtobeon-sitefor100hours,thatmeanstheycanonlymiss10hoursatthemaximum.
• Submissionofweeklylogsheets:Logsheetsareyourproofofattendanceforeachweek,whichisrequiredbyCerritosCollege.Foreachweekthestudentattendstheirfieldplacement,theywilldocumenttheirtimeloggedatthesitethroughaspecificlogsheetfoundonCanvas.StudentsMUSTsavethelogas“Week1”or“Week2,”etc,anduploadtoitthecorrespondingassignmentonCanvasbyFridayat11:59pmeachweek.Studentsareencouragedtosubmitthetimesheetuponimmediatecompletionofthelastdayoftheplacementfortheweek.Thisshouldbeseenasavirtualtimesheetandproofofattendanceasanyemployeewouldsubmittotheiremployer.Becausethisisarecordofstudentattendance,studentswhodonotsubmitatimesheetbeforetheweeklydeadlinewillreceiveareductionof25pointsintheirgrade.

ThereisnouniformstartdateforstudentplacementsduetothevarietyofHumanResourcesproceduresateachsite.Allhoursmustbecompletedforthesemesterinwhichthestudentisenrolled.
Intheunfortunateeventthatthereisadelayedstarttoastudent’sinternship(throughnopartofthestudent)andthestudenthasconsistentlyattendedtheplacement,butwasunabletogettherequiredhourspriortotheendofthesemester,thestudentmayreceiveanincompleteforthesemesterandmayfinishthehoursinthefollowingsemester.Assoonasallcourserequirementsaremet,thegradewillbecalculatedandagradechangeformwillbecompletedandsubmittedtoAdmissions&Records.
BecausethehourscompletedonsiteareusedforthestudenttoapplyforastatelicenseandarespecifictotheSpeech-LanguagePathologistwhosupervisesthem,allhourscompletedattheplacementsitemustbereviewedandsignedoffbythedesignatedSLPusingthelogsheetprovidedinclass.
Studentswhodonotsuccessfullycompletethecourse(e.g.,withdrew,weredropped,orreceiveda“D”or“F”intheclass)maynottransfertheclinicalhoursobtainedinthatclasstoafutureclinicalexperiencecourseatCerritosCollege.
Studentsneedtomakeeveryefforttobeaccurateandpreciseintheircalculationofclinicalhoursaccordingtotherequirementsofthecourseandthelogsheetprovided.IftheinstructororsupervisingSLPfindsthatthestudentmadeerrorsintheircalculationsonthecumulativelogsheetorfraudulentlyaddedhours,theymayrefusetosignthestudent’slogsheetandthiswillputthestudentatriskforfailingtheclassornothavingsufficienthourstocompletethecourse.
Supervision:
• StudentsareassignedtypicallytoonesupervisingSLP.Attimes,theremaybeaneedfortwosupervisors.Inthosecases,thesupervisorsandcourseinstructorwilldeterminehowthemidtermandfinalassessmentswillbecompleted.
• Studentsmustbesupervisedunderastate-licensedSLP.TheSLPshouldbeon-siteforthescheduledfieldplacementdays.
• StudentsmaybepermittedtoworkalonewithclientsinatherapyroombasedonthesupervisingSLP’sjudgmentandreadiness/agreementofthestudent
• IfanSLPisscheduledtobeabsentonagivenday,andthereisanotherSLPon-sitethatislicensed,thestudentmayattendthatdayiftheyhavecommunicatedwiththecourseinstructorandprovidedthenameandlicensenumberofthesubstitutesupervisingSLPtothecourseinstructor.
• SLPshavedifferentstylesofsupervision/mentorship,expectations,andmannersoffeedback.Studentsareencouragedtodiscussthefollowingintheirfirstfewweeksofplacementtohelpthemunderstandwhatisexpectedoftheminthatexperience:

• Althoughmoststudentsandsupervisorsestablishpositive,professionalrelationshipsduringtheclinicalexperience,therearetimeswhenstudentsfeelchallengesinrelatingtotheirSLPand/orthedemandsofthesite.ItistheresponsibilityofthestudenttobringtheseconcernsuptothesupervisingSLPandinstructorinatimelymannersothestudent’sneedscanbeaddressedassoonaspossible,ideallybeforethemidtermassessment.
StudentDressCode
Studentappearanceandselectionofclothingshouldreflectprofessionalismandconcernforthewelfareofthepatient.Thefollowingguidelinesarerequiredforappropriatedressonthefieldplacementsasaminimum(somesiteshavefurtherguidelinesregardingphysicalappearance):
1. Nojeans,sweats,shortsortornclothing.Clothingmustbeclean,neatandfreeofstainsandwrinkles.Cleavageshouldbecoveredup.
2. Hairistobeneatandclean.Somesitesrequirestaffandinternstohavehairatthebase/naturalcolor(nobrightdyes)-anaturalwigmaybepermittedbutitisbesttousenaturalcolor.Facialhairshouldbeshortandneatlytrimmed.
3. Makeupshouldnotdrawattentiontooneselfandworninmoderation.4. Applicationofstrongscentedperfume,cologneoraftershaveisnotacceptable.5. Shoesshouldbeclose-toed,safeandappropriateforthesetting.Nosandalsorflip-flops

• Notparticipating/showingupforplacementwithoutgivingnoticetothesupervisorandinstructor;repeatedtardinessatsite(atleast20minuteslateonmorethan3occasions)
• Breachingconfidentialityrequirementsofhealth-caresettingsandeducationalsettings(e.g.,HIPAA,IEPs,Medicaiddocumentation)
• Repeatederroneousorincompletedocumentationofrequiredtreatmentpaperwork(e.g.,Medicaidreimbursementforms,treatmentlogs)thatcompromisesasite’sabilitytoreimburseforSLPservicesorprogressionoftreatment

SiteFacilityResponsibilitiesintheClinicalExperience
Speech-languagePathologistswhovolunteertosuperviseaSLPAstudentmustagreetothefollowingresponsibilities(asmandatedbytheSLPABandASHA):
• ThesupervisorholdsaCalifornialicenseand/oreducationalcredential(ifworkinginthepublicschools)andhasatleasttwoyearsofexperiencepost-ClinicalFellowshipYearo ThesupervisingSLPshouldhaveatleast6hoursofsupervisiontraining
• Providesascheduletotheclinicaldirectorthataccuratelyreflectstheirsupervisingavailability
• Theratiooffieldworksupervisortostudentsmustnotexceed1:2andmustensurepropersupervisionthroughdirectobservationatleast50%ofthetime
• Studentsmustbesupervisedatleast50%ofthetimewhenengagedinpatient/clientcontact
• Thesupervisorwillorientthestudenttothesiteanddiscussexpectationsofbehaviorandresponsibilitiesatthatsite
• Thesupervisorshouldalsoidentifyemergencyplansandanyotherrelevanthealth/safetyinformationtothestudent
• Thesupervisormustbeon-site100%ofthetime,butmayleavethestudentalonewithclients/studentsifconfidentthattheSLPAinternisabletoconductthesessioncompetently

PolicyonInjuryduringClinicalExperience:
• IntheeventofaninjurytotheSLPAinternduringyourclinicalexperience,theinternshouldnotifythesupervisingSpeech-LanguagePathologistandCerritosCollegecourseinstructorimmediately.
• Asapartofthecontractualagreementwitheachclinicalsite,CerritosCollegehasprovidedliabilityinsuranceforanyinjuriesorincidenceswhileastudentison-siteattheirfieldplacement.
• TheSLPAinternwillbedirectedtolegiblyfilloutstudentinjuryformsandwillbedirectedtoaspecificclinic;theywillneedthecompletedformsbeforetheycanbetreatedatthatclinic.
• Ifapatientisinjuredintheintern’spresence,theymustfollowthepoliciesandproceduresoftheclinic/sitetowhichtheyareassigned.YoumustreportthisincidentimmediatelytoyoursupervisingSLPandthecourseinstructor.Thecourseinstructorwillassistthestudentifaclaimneedstobemade.
