It’s showtime again! Get ready for cars, stars and guitars when the 18th an-nual BC Classic and Custom Car Show rolls into the Abbotsford Tradex Centre for three great days of motorsport ac-tion April 18 to 20.

Sponsored by longtime supporter, Lucas Oil Products Canada, this year’s event will be jam-packed with more exciting features, entertainment on stage and live motorsport demonstrations than ever before! Showcasing more than 250 of the Pacifi c Northwest’s fi nest street rods, customs, muscle, classic and race cars, the show will also feature a number of custom car creations by some of western Canada’s top car-crafters.

Check out hundreds of radical rides like Rivision, JF Kustoms’ fantastic 1964 Buick Riviera! This amazing piece of rolling automotive art took more than 20,000 hours to build and was recent-ly awarded the highly coveted Ridler Award at the 2014 Detroit Autorama.

This is the fi rst time in more 30 years that a Canadian has won the Ridler and we are honoured to have been chosen for its Canadian debut. Please join us in congratulating JF Launier on his histor-ic accomplishment when he unveils the Rivision to B.C. custom car enthusiasts for the fi rst time on Friday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m.

This is also a great opportunity to talk to the pros about building your dream car as there will be more than 75 of B.C.’s top aftermarket automotive com-panies attending with commercial ven-dor displays. Included in that list are no less than 15 professional custom shops. This is the highest number of builders confi rmed to attend in the 18-year histo-ry of the show. In addition to the custom car builders, everything from high-per-formance engine parts, race car chassis fabrication, restoration parts, custom and street rod construction, fuel sys-tems, tires and wheels and more, will be

well represented at our 2014 event.

This year marks the 40th anniversary

of the hit ‘70s TV show Happy Days, and

we are very pleased to announce that

Henry Winkler, aka ‘The Fonz’, has been

confi rmed as our special guest of honour.

Happy Days capitalized on the nostalgic

theme of the very successful American

Graffi ti movie and revolved around a

group of friends growing up in a small

American town in the late ‘50s and ‘60s.

The Fonz character was the defi nition of

cool in the TV series which took us back

to a time of innocence and featured great

cars and classic rock ‘n’ roll. We are hon-

oured that Mr. Winkler has taken time

from his very busy schedule to attend.

Another addition to our line-up of car

stars will be an appearance by old-school

car customizer Larry Grobe, better known

as Voodoo Larry. You can catch him at

the Cherry Bomb Photography booth

where he will be signing autographs and

demonstrating his pin-striping skills in

between working on a special chop at the

Custom Car Classroom.

Joining Mr. Winkler and Voodoo Larry

are returning celebrities, George Barris,

the King of Kustomizers, and the metal

master himself, Gene Winfi eld. Brought

to you by the Great Canadian Oil Change

company, Barris will once again be cruis-

ing the show looking for his favourite car

which will receive the annual Custom Car

Of The Year Award.

Winfi eld will be busy all weekend work-

ing his metal magic at the KMS Tools

and C.A.R. Parts sponsored Custom Car

Classroom, when he chops the top on a

1948 Chevrolet Businessman’s Coupe.

All the stars will be appearing at the

show Friday through Sunday signing au-

tographs, selling memorabilia and pos-

ing for photos with their fans.

Also returning for 2014 is the very

popular Custom Motorcycle Showcase.

This special feature is brought to you by

MountainView Harley-Davidson in Chilli-

wack and is dedicated to the two-wheel

enthusiast featuring numerous creations

by the top bike builders in the province.

And if you’re a rider yourself, you can take

advantage of free bike parking on Cornell

Street directly in front of the Tradex, cour-

tesy of MountainView Harley-Davidson.

Our Fuel and Fire event continues to be

a big hit with race fans thanks to sponsors

West-Can Auto Parts, Eagle Motorplex

and Mission Raceway Park. Be a part of

the action when nitro methane-powered

dragsters and fuel altereds fi re up their

3,500-plus horsepower engines thrilling

fans with Thunder In The Pipes! And as if

that’s not enough, Barry Prescott and his

jet powered-funny car, the Terminator, will be performing in our Burner Bang

Shootout! These cars are unbelievable

to watch generating 30-foot fl ames from

their afterburners in an awesome display

of raw power that you’ll just have to see

to believe! Catch all the action Friday and

Saturday at 9 p.m. (nitro and jet demo),

and again Sunday at 2 p.m. (nitro and

burnout contest).

Don’t forget to bring your camera be-

cause not only will you want to get some

pics of the cool cars on display you’re go-

ing to want to get a shot with the beauti-

ful Hot Rod Hotties. Their team of motor-

sport models will be on site all weekend

signing autographs and posing for pho-

tos with fans. After all the excitement

you’ll probably want to take a break at

some time so hook up with friends at the

beer garden and enjoy live entertainment

on the Rock 101/A&W stage featuring 10

bands and special performances by CMT

recording artist and Canadian Idol fi nal-

ist, Karen Lee Batten.

See it all, only at the BC Classic and Custom Car Show, brought to you in part

by Sherwin-Williams Canada, Mothers

Wax, The Abbotsford News (Black Press),

and Hot Rod’s Restos.

Show times: Friday: 5 to 10 p.m., Sat-urday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door

and cost $17 for adults, $15 for seniors,

$8 for youth 6-12 years old, and kids un-

der fi ve are admitted free. Also available

are two-day adult passes for $30 and

three-day adult weekend passes for $40.

Advance discount tickets (adult single

day only) are available at West-Can Auto

Parts (Abbotsford location only). And if

you’re planning to attend on Saturday or

Sunday, get there early as the fi rst 1,000

fans through the door each day will re-

ceive a complimentary pass to the drag

races courtesy of Mission Raceway Park.

Parking is only $6 and if you own a pre-

1970 specialty vehicle you can take ad-

vantage of our VIP extra wide parking on

the grass in front of the Tradex.

Richardt SCHOLZBritish Columbia Classic & Custom Car Show

Starting with a 1964 Buick Riviera, one of the iconic designs in the auto-motive world, JF Laurnier, owner of JF Kustoms in Osoyoos has taken Bill Mitchell’s design to a whole new level. Keeping true to the overall concept of the car, but tweaking every bit of it, is tricky to get right, and the Ridler Award is proof he got it very right indeed.

As with all new customs, the mod-ern running gear allows it to run and perform like a new exotic super car but with a totally unique personality. The overall look is so perfect that even the next generation “Boattail” rear window looks like a factory design. The original

Riviera was conceived by legendary designer Bill Mitchell to give GM a car that had a taste of a Rolls-Royce with the performance of a Ferrari.

Laurnier had already tackled the Detroit Autorama’s Ridler award with 3 cars he had built for customers and now was the time for him to recreate a Buick Riviera and tackle the Ridler award with a car of his own. The 1964 Buick Riviera, dubbed “Rivision,” was in a league of its own. Out of the 2014 Great 8 contenders, four were Chevys and three were Ford hot rods.

Knowing the ‘64s roof had a sedate look, Laurnier added another of Bill Mitchell’s classic designs, the early ‘70s Riviera Boa.

Over the years we’ve come to know and love many TV characters, from Hawk-eye Pierce and Louis De Palma, to Andy Griffi th and Archie Bunker. While plenty of television’s actors have perfected their role and landed a place in American pop culture in regards to being labeled a ‘Cool Dude’, it would be safe to crown this one TV charac-ter above all others as the coolest there is. If you were to look up the word cool in the dictionary, no doubt his picture would be included.

Who else would be swarmed by adoring girls by simply snapping his fi n-gers, start a juke box with one swift pound of his fi st, or create his own ‘macho vocabulary’ that included ‘Exactamundo’ than the ‘70s TV icon known as ‘The Fonz’. Also going by the title ‘Fonzie’, he was the main character that sky rocketed the seventy’s TV sit com Happy Days to the number 1 rated program in America. Played by a recent acting school graduate by the name of Henry Winkler his interpretation

of a small mid-western town’s motorcy-cle riding, leather jacketed rebel would become one the biggest success stories in television history.

To better understand how this all transpired we’ll start way back in 1973 when the ABC TV network executives had noticed the success of a certain George Lucas produced movie called ‘American

Graffi ti’ and wanted to capitalize on the sudden nostalgia craze. A TV pilot for a new ‘50s show (even though ‘Graffi ti was set in 1962) was arranged, but before this was initiated a TV producer by the name of Garry Marshal was con-tacted about a ‘50s ‘skit’ that had already been tele-vised as one segment of the ‘Love American Style’ TV show. Since Garry al-ready had in place a nostal-

gia story line ready to produce into a full blown show, ABC elected to pick up his work. It also helped that appearing as one of the actors in that skit was Ron Howard, the actor who had starred in ‘Graffi ti’. It only made sense to include him in this new venture. When Happy Days fi rst aired

A 1970s television legend will be in Abbotsford later this weekend for the annual B.C. Classic and Custom Car Show.

Best known as The Fonz from Happy Days (which celebrates its 40th anni-versary this year), Henry Winkler will be speaking at the event, scheduled for April 18-20 at Tradex.

But Winkler wasn't always a car guy.

He leases his vehicles, and as long as they start, he's happy.

"But now when I go to these car shows, talk about will and passion – [the builders] have created works of art," he said. "I have enormous respect for what they do. To experience their pride and joy in that vehicle is emo-tional.

Winkler said that his talk is simply about his life story.

"Even if they came to see The Fonz, they will leave having an appreciation of who I am today."

It was the struggle to escape the typecasting shadow The Fonz cast that formed Winkler into who he is today.

"There was a time when it was hard

to get hired," said Winkler. He then aimed his efforts at directing, produc-ing and writing.

Winkler has also long championed helping children suffering from learn-ing disabilities – something he knows all too well. A dyslexic, he struggled daily with his chosen profession, especially one that emphasizes mem-orization.

The accomplished performer has also co-authored 26 children's books with Lin Oliver. The main character is Hank Zipzer, a boy affl icted with dyslexia and growing up on the Upper West Side of New York City, is based on Winkler himself. The books have also spawned into a television series of the same name, which fi rst aired in January 2014 on the Children's BBC in the United Kingdom.

Aside from some guest television and movie appearances, Winkler earned another legion of fans from his work on the cult-favourite TV show, Arrested Development.

Winkler said he still counts as one of his greatest TV moments the time he was able to make a notoriously serious man, producer Mitch Horowitz, laugh out loud.

on ABC in 1974 to meager rat-ings, high school student Richie Cunningham, played by Ron Howard starred as a teenager dealing with friends and family life in a typical Wisconsin town during the ‘50s. The usual com-ical antics and practical jokes ensued. Critics soon anticipated a quick burial, after all this was a time when Disco was begin-ning to develop. Fate may have cut this show’s existence if not for one lone factor. Producer

Garry Marshal had included a character in the script that would trans-form, and save Happy Days, as well as give rise to one of the most popular stars ever televised.

When it came time to conjure up a ‘50s Greaser type char-acter Garry delved into his past for inspiration. It was his recollec-tion of a leather jacket clad hood-lum that

hung around a Bronx New York diner, similar to Arnold’s diner on Happy Days, that Garry had frequented as a youth which would be the impetus for The Fonz. This part called for a young Italian/American type and a casting call for actors went out. Having recently graduated from the Yale school of Drama the up-and –coming actor by the name of Henry Winkler would answer that call. Competing against Henry was a slicked haired Mickey Dolenz

from the ‘60s musical group The Monkees. But landing the part of Arthur Fonzarelli (The Fonz) was Winkler.

In this role as The Fonz Winkler would play one of Richie Cunningham’s friends, (who was the star of the series) together with Richie’s other friends Potsie Weber and Ralph Malph. Initially this lesser part called for The Fonz to be a street tough biker type who was employed as a mechanic and spent his off hours as a bit of a womanizer. As the show pro-gressed so did the role of The Fonz as it was becoming more evident that he was beginning to be the ‘Leader of the pack’. During the beginning of that fi rst season Arthur Fonzarelli sported a beige coloured wind-breaker, not exactly standard issue rebel gear. ABC censors thought a black leather jacket implied The Fonz was too much of a juvenile delinquent. Garry Marshal argued that for safety reasons (for motorcycle riders) he should be allowed to wear a leather jacket. This was permit-ted, but only while riding his motorcycle. So in most early episodes scenes with him were shot with his 1949 Triumph TR5 trophy motorcycle.

Eventually this restriction was relaxed, and as his role in the show increased so did his popularity, as well as the show’s. He was fast becoming a ‘chick magnet’ as he had a pen-sion for attracting a harem. Ex-uding confi dence The Fonz was

now set to be TV’s next King of Cool. Bolstering his image The Fonz would command conver-sations using his own terminol-ogy which included such unique words as ‘Exactamundo’. Another word, although not in-vented by him, nerd, was given new life to the point it is now a common part of our vocabulary today. Not to be forgotten was the hugely popular ‘Sit on it’, a phrase created by the show’s writer Bob Brunner. Then there is his all-encompassing catch phrase, “Aaaaayh”, which is usually accompanied by a two ‘thumbs up’ gesture. This appar-ently was derived from the days of the Roman gladiator battles. With Winkler’s brilliant interpre-tation of a ‘50s greaser scoring huge with viewers and critics alike, his Fonz character was elevated to the main star status, and was the commanding fi g-ure in the cast. With his wealth of ‘street wise’ knowledge he was often sought out for advise by the shows other characters, including Richie. One such con-versation went as follows; “Act tough, sound tough and maybe people will think you’re tough”. Making use of Arnold’s men’s washroom as his offi ce he could typically be seen playing pinball and living by his ‘code of honor’, “live fast, love hard and don’t let anyone use your comb”, obviously an important tool for keeping that cool image intact. Showing that there was honor in the greaser life style he had included the Fonzarelli

code “If a man saves your life, any favour he asks you gotta answer it”. This may be derived from the fact he considered his hero to be the Lone Ranger.

By the mid-seventies this formula for a ‘50s sit com had become such a success Happy Days was the #1 rated TV show in America during the ’76-’77 season, and The Fonz’s popu-larity was so vast that he was receiving 55,000 fan letters per week!

In 1980, as a true indicator of just how much he was idolized, the Smithsonian Institute of American History put on display The Fonz’s trademark leather jacket, cementing his place in cool’s subculture. Lending credibility to his cult status The Fonz is listed as #4 in TV Guide’s ’50 Greatest TV characters of all time’.

The revered actor who could be credited with giving life to The Fonz, Henry Winkler, has gone on to become a diverse actor, as well as producing and directing in show business. His lengthy list of roles include ‘The lords of Flatbush’, ‘Night Shift’ and ‘The Water Boy’. One of the shows Winkler has produced was the 1990s hit ‘MacGyver’.

In his free time he and his wife Stacey are involved in numerous foundations and charitable organizations. He is also accredited with being an accomplished author.

Custom car builder, pin-striper, mu-sician! To say Larry Grobe is talented would be an understatement. Well known for creating some of America’s coolest traditional customs, Voodoo Larry (a nickname given him by a cus-tomer years ago) has been a devoted disciple of the custom car culture since he was a teenager.

Born in Chicago, Ill., Larry was intro-duced to the world of hot rods and cus-tom cars when he saw George Lucas’ iconic film American Graffiti in 1979 for the first time. At the young age of 15, the experience would forever change the direction his life would take. He credits the movie and in particular the scene featuring a custom 1951 Merc and actor Bo Hopkins (leader of the

Pharaohs car club) for kick-starting his life long interest in old cars, ‘50s mu-sic and the ‘graffiti’ lifestyle.

Over the next 30 years, Larry totally immersed himself in all things custom car-related. Completely self-taught, he has created too many cars to list, but two that deserve special recogni-tion are his Voodoo Idol, a 1946 Ford Coupe built as a tribute to legendary car builder Gene Winfield (also ap-pearing at this year’s show) along with the Voodoo Kreeper, the 1953 Chevy 150 Sedan pictured above.

In 2007 Larry converted his passion into a business opening Voodoo Larry Kustoms in Elk Grove Village (a suburb of Chicago). His shop specializes in the creation of one-of-a-kind old school customs and traditional hot rods. Over the past eight years his work has be-

come very respected among the ‘Graf-fiti’ crowd right across North America. Typically there are anywhere from 10 to 12 projects on the go at any given time in his shop with one to two cars being completed each year.

In addition to building custom cars, Larry is also an accomplished pin-striper. Inspired by the early work of Big Daddy Ed Roth, he’s been laying down lines for more than 20 years.

In his spare time, Larry is also very active in the car club and show scene around Chicago. He is the founder of the Voodoo Kings car club (established in 1998) and has also been the orga-nizer of the highly popular Motorama feature section of the Chicago World of Wheels for the past five years. He also plays stand-up bass in the Rock-abilly band ‘Lil Red and the Howling

Wolves, which he formed three years ago (check it out on Facebook). Can you say busy guy?

You can catch up with Larry at the show by visiting the Cherry Bomb Photography booth where he will be demonstrating his pin-striping skills in between working on a “chop” at the Custom Car Classroom. Although this is not the first time Larry has attend-ed a car show in the Greater Vancou-ver area (he appeared at the 2011 Ab-botsford World Of Wheels) we are very pleased to have him at our show. And something tells me that we’ll be see-ing a lot more of Voodoo Larry around the Fraser Valley in the future (you’ll have to ask him what’s up).

I’m sure his many Canadian friends and fans will be very happy about that indeed.

Frozen Vegetables: The Powerhouse Convenience Food

BROUGHT TO YOU BY ABBOTSFORD NISSAN

CHEF DEZ on COOKING

During every trip to the supermar-ket we must make choices between the price, health, and convenience aspects of the foods we buy. Most

people tend to believe that fresh is always the best option, and in many cases it is, but what about frozen vegetables? Are they just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts?

Studies have shown that most frozen vegetables are just as nourishing. Other than a quick blanching process to kill any bacteria, they are virtually un-processed and fl ash frozen to preserve freshness. By staying frozen from shortly after harvest-ing until the time they reach your kitchen, they are by far a better product than most people think.

Unless fresh goods are harvested locally, they must travel great distances in order to be available to you in the produce section. This usually means that they are harvested before full ripeness occurs in hopes of them being at their peak by the time they arrive for one to purchase. This timely arrival is not always the case however, and you may be left with a more inferior product than if you were to get it direct from the farm. Full

ripening on the tree/vine before harvesting also always produces a far more healthful product.

This being said, if you live in a farming area where fresh local produce is available then by all means buy fresh, otherwise frozen is another viable option. For many house-holds frozen is far more convenient for their

busy lifestyles: cutting, washing, and in some cases peeling has already been done for them. The chance of food spoilage is also greatly reduced, unless it is for-gotten about in the freezer for long periods of time. Most fro-zen vegetables are recommend-ed to be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. They are not im-mediately bad or freezer burnt

in the 7th month, but should be used up sooner rather than later for optimal results.

I am not by any means suggesting that one should always buy frozen when it comes to imported fruits or vegetables, but merely that there are other healthy and convenient options to fresh when applicable. One last note is to always read the labels on all pack-aged foods to ensure that you are aware of any added ingredients that may be present.

Q

Chef Dez is a Food Columnist, Culinary Instructor & Cookbook Author.Visit him at www.chefdez.com

Next Chef Dez Column: May 21

Dear Chef Dez: Whenever I buy a bag of either frozen peas or frozen corn, they are nicely

individual but after say 1-1/2 weeks in my freezer they are turned into one big hard lump. Any suggestions?

~ Barbara T. from Maple Ridge, BC

Dear Barbara:This usually happens because the frozen vegetables partially thaw, waters collects

on the vegetables, and then when they get put back in the freezer they clump together because the newly formed moisture freezes everything together.

This can start happening even from the time you place them in your shopping cart, while you wait at the till, get them in your car, travel home and then fi nally make it into the freezer. Even in this time frame, the vegetables become partly thawed and will cause this clumping. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you do the following:

• Shop for frozen foods last when making your grocery store trip.• Keep frozen foods together in your cart/bags to help keep them cold.• Get them immediately into the freezer when you get home.It is hard to always keep this clumping from happening at all, but the only other

thing to suggest is bring a cooler with ice packs with you in your car and as soon as you leave the grocery store place them in this cooler for the trip home.
