Why Issue a New Banknote?

Central banks issue new banknotes for two main reasons:

Normally, to replace notes that have lost their counterfeit resilience; and

Occasionally, to commemorate epochal events.

The new N100 banknote is being issued to commemorate our 100 years as a single united nation.

Examples of Commemorative Banknotes Morocco—to celebrate 25 years of the

country’s banknote production company.

Russia—to mark 100 days before 2014 Olympics.

Costa Rica—to celebrate 100 years of independence.

Belize—to celebrate 30th independence.

Kuwait—to celebrate 10th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait.

Nigeria—to mark 50th independence.

The new N100 Centenary Banknote

It is in this spirit that the Central Bank of Nigeria is joining the nation in celebrating 100 years of our amalgamation by issuing a new banknote.

I am very proud to inform you that this note is a first of its kind in many respects. It has been designed and produced with the most advanced security technology in the world.

QR Code—Incorporated to make note digital and store significant information that highlights our 100 year journey.

This feature makes the note the first smart-connected paper banknote in the world using smartphones as identity and security tool for de-encryption of information.
