2015 INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AWARDThis award will go to the business that can best demonstrate it has made a significant achievement in the application of information technology within its Supply Chain. The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM.

SVS Australia worked with Aurizon with a view to record video and data over a 90-hour period running on battery power only. This system had to be stand-alone and operate autonomously from any external power supply.

The system was to be heavy duty as the environment was described as harsh and needed to record Video footage and G-Force data when the unit was in service. Aurizon also wanted a system that could pinpoint what was occurring within the transportation of the containers, so that the combined image and data approach would enable Aurizon to make alterations to manage risk and reduce damages to products within their care during transportation.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Iwas reading an interesting article recently detailing how 1,360 workers were injured by forklifts in the past two years in NSW alone and there have been eight deaths is the past three years in NSW. This is

a terrible record and not covered widely by the media, let alone discussed in the Industry.

Most of the forklifts incidents were to pedestrians in and around warehouses. While high vis vests are common place, the separation of forklift travel paths and pedestrians is not that common. Please make sure you have adequately protected your forklift operators and pedestrians, by considering barriers and pedestrian walkways.

2015 has been an interesting and challenging time for many Australian companies operating in the domestic and international Supply Chains. The depreciation of the Australian Dollar, port strikes on the US West Coast and slowdown in many markets have created pressure.

So too the relentless price increases on parcels by Australia Post, (over 60% since 2008) have created issues for many small / medium businesses, as couriers who are significantly cheaper have ability to match increases. Then there are price pressures flowing on to general freight, which impacts everyone.

Australia Post blame diesel prices, but according to the Australian Institute of Petroleum the national average cost of diesel in Australia is 34.6 cents per litre cheaper in September 2015 than the average national price in 2008. Now Australia Post want to increase letter pricing to $1, a 100% increase since 2007. You have to wonder why they are doing this to Australian consumers and businesses who are trying to compete, employ people and grow. Surely there are productivity improvements, better post office merchandising and better servicing of customers they can deploy first without impacting Australia’s competitiveness.

The SCLAA has made representations to the ACCC and Productivity Commission on Australia Post, with detailed analysis of the price increases and comparisons to couriers. The SCLAA has made a submission to the ACCC which is on the ACCC website. https://www.accc.gov.au/regulated-infrastructure/postal-services/australia-post-letter-pricing-2015/issues-paper

STRAIGHT TALK FROM DAVID DOHERTY OAM

Over my lifetime I have been exposed to countless ‘learning’ (training, education, change initiatives) programs. Some have been beneficial, but many failed to generate any meaningful improvement

in my performance, or indeed the performance of colleagues I was associated with and/or responsible for.

In recent years writers and researchers dealing with Dementia and/or declining mental capacity have passionately advised people of all ages to pursue ‘cognitive exercising’ to maintain brain function. That is ‘use it or lose it’. Often the experts persuade people to learn a language, study music, play chess, or do a raft of crosswords and puzzles or such. Undoubtedly this is all good advice and worthy of sensible pursuit. However traditional learning, and the use it or lose it processes, suggest a continuation of our past attitudes and vantage points.

My recent explorations caused me to take a new vantage point leading to the belief that ‘UNLEARNING’ may be just as important as learning.

Margie Warrell in Forbes Magazine; “Unlearning is about moving away from something – letting go. It’s like stripping old paint”. Again Warrell, “Many people tend to stick with what they know and avoid situations and challenges where they may mess up, thus creating a safe, secure and comfortable (and confining) world for themselves.”

“They do their best to mould the changes going on around them - in people, events and the general environment – to fit with their current mental maps. They say they’re open to change but actually do their best to avoid it. For a while that strategy can work fairly well. What is doesn’t do is prepare them to adapt to a future that may well require an entirely new set of maps.”

Letting go of outdated mental maps and outdated learned experiences may be a key to becoming a genuine change agent armed to meet the emerging challenges in business and life.

Norman Doidge says,“Bad habits are difficult to break or unlearn. Unlearning is often a lot harder than learning.” If you have not read Doidge’s books make the effort to do it now. I particularly enjoyed his disclosures on ‘Learned non-use’.

Prasad Kaipa suggests that,“Unlearning what is learned so that you are open to learning what is unknown and experience it is a path that interest many people.”

Surendra Verna in his book Learn and Unlearn says,“Unlearning is not the same as forgetting. It requires fundamental changes to our mental processes and relentless willingness to pursue new ways. It is far more difficult than learning as it challenges old values and beliefs. But it opens up new realities and possibilities by unleashing creative energy to experience others and ourselves in different ways. A lifetime of learning cannot be erased easily. The old wisdom is that we learn best from our mistakes. Research, however shows that something more is needed: we must be conscious of our mistakes to harness the benefits of new learning.”

Incidentally I apologise to the authors quoted in this Straight Talk column if I have incorrectly quoted or interpreted their work.

All of us have learned and experienced a great deal. Over time we have all developed mental maps with habits and attitudes set in concrete.

Unlearning those outdated views will be a catalyst for effective relearning and the opening up of opportunities to meet the exciting emerging life and business challenges.

In my lifetime unimaginable changes have occurred. Often I have been unprepared or unwilling to enthusiastically embrace those changes.

The future demands a passionate acceptance of the need to unlearn outdated practices and views whilst committing to continuous targeted relearning.

Supply Chain and Logistics Professionals are not exempt. We need to individually and collectively pursue unlearning and relearning as a key improvement strategy.

Are you ready to take up the challenge personally, and to become an innovative and effective leader of change for the Profession?

As Alvin Toffler wrote,“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

“Kindness is a language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Mark Twain.

QLD MEMBERS HEADED TO RAAF

The QLD SCLAA members recently had the unique opportunity to visit the C17’s at Amberley RAAF base. The group was collected by bus at the front gate and transported to the 36 Squadron offices. There we met Flt Lt Jason O’Toole and were briefed on the C17 and the support crew’s activities. From there it was a very short walk onto the Tarmac to walk through the aircraft. Jason introduced us to the Aircraft’s Loadmaster. He

advised what and how the machine was used. It was impressive how the crew proudly explained their part in disaster recovery and other challenges thrown at them 24/7. From there it was off to the Boeing Managed warehouse for a guided tour by the Warehouse manager. The entire visit was impressive from start to finish and we all left with a better understanding of the Logistical challenges faced by the crew but more importantly the effort and pride the crew and support staff have for their job.

The last few months in WA have seen the annual Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day and a Future Leaders Group (FLG) event at Curtin University. The division’s General Meeting and Xmas

celebration also rapidly approaches.

Yuri Sukhov, reported on the recent Future Leaders Group (FLG) event, titled ‘Digitalisation and Technology in the SCM & Logistics industry and their impact on the Australian job market’...

The key elements of Wilson Casado, Managing Partner and Director at Visagio Group’s presentation to students, young professionals and academic staff at Curtin University were:• The ‘Internet of Things’, Its development, dynamics and

future trends in SCM & Logistics.• The impact of robotics on current Supply Chain processes.• An open discussion on how digitalisation and technology

will influence and change Australian job markets. The presentation was interesting and thought provoking.

Many thanks are due to Wilson for speaking, Yuri for organising the event and Curtin University for providing the venue and catering and for encouraging its staff and students to attend.

The Peter Smith Memorial Golf Day was held in late October at the Vines. Over a hundred industry professionals and their guests participated on a bright but overcast day from which the proceeds will be donated to Canteen, the cancer victim support charity.

The on course festivities were followed by prize giving and an auction of memorabilia, accompanied by a buffet and entertainment. A great day was had by all, particularly by Budget Forklifts, the tournament winners (and Platinum sponsors!), second placed AMCAP and third placed Toll Energy, and less so by NAGA winners Totally Workwear. There were also several individual prize winners. Excellent musical entertainment and comedy were provided by Ari and Mike G respectively.

Of particular note was the extremely brave and emotional personal story told by Keira, a young Canteen member and volunteer, of her father’s battle with terminal cancer, its effect on his extended family and how Canteen has provided much needed support. Mrs Peter Smith supported Keira and provided another humorous anecdote to suitably commemorate her late husband, in whose name the Golf Day is held.

A raffle alone raised more than a thousand dollars for Canteen, and the memorabilia auction several times that. With the final sum raised yet to be totalled, great thanks are due to all who participated and contributed, particularly the key sponsors, Budget Forklifts (Platinum), AMCAP, Toyota Autoparts, Cristal and TRL Recruitment (Gold), many others (Silver), the Vines, and last but certainly not least to Dan Di Stasio the tireless event organiser.

The next SCLAA event, and the final one of the year in WA will be the General Meeting and Xmas Sundowner which will be held at the State Tennis Centre on 3rd December. All members and non-members are welcome, particularly those that would like to assist in the running of the Association in 2016.

A healthy gathering of logisticians in WA recently shared breakfast, networked and listened to two speakers giving their own unique perspectives on the subject.

Emphasising the cultural diversity that Human Change Management must embrace Wilson Casado (of Brazilian ancestry) spoke about HCMBOK methodology and demonstrated it through a group exercise. Dom Thatcher (of Mauritian descent) related his personal experiences of the human perspective of business transformation from 25 years at Australia Post. Each was inspirational in his own way.

Wilson’s presentation highlighted the importance of human change management by identifying that 70% of people take a lot of persuasion to change. He went on, through the practical exercise to demonstrate the range of approaches that can be adopted to deliver the necessary persuasion.

Dom spoke passionately of his approach to change management at Post conveying clearly the critical roles that personal commitment and human engagement have played in his projects’ success. He summarised his approach as the ‘Three As’; Affinity, Affiliation and Autonomy and emphasised that innovation must be ‘smart’, clever’ and must ‘do more with less’.

None who attended could have failed to return to work with a boost in motivation. Great thanks to both of the speakers for engendering this.

16 SCLAA NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2015

In the last five years SafeWork NSW has investigated 21 incidents in NSW involving workers unpacking shipping containers. Three of these workers were killed. The most serious incidents involved unpacking sheet material such as glass, stone, sandwich panels and timber. SafeWork NSW is running a program to highlight the risks associated with unpacking shipping containers and to provide simple advice on how to manage these risks. A video safety

alert and guidance material will be available in the coming months. If freight isn’t packed with safe unloading in mind, or if it becomes unstable during transit, workers unpacking it can be at risk of serious injury or death. If you unpack shipping containers, use these simple tips to keep your people safe.

WORKING WITH SUPPLIERS Work with suppliers to ensure the load is appropriately packed for safe transit and unpacking. Ask them to use racks or crates, and to secure freight with wrapping or strapping. You can also ask suppliers to use containers that are open at both ends or have an open top for safer access.

Bulky items packed using crates, wrapping, dunnage bags and strapping

PLAN THE WORK Plan before you unpack the container and consider what equipment you will need. Choose an area with flat ground and unpack at ground level where possible. Be careful when opening the container in case the load has shifted. Keep looking for risks as you unpack, and adjust your plan as conditions change. Instruct workers about safety procedures and make sure they are appropriately experienced and supervised.

Tamara De MichielDivisional President- [email protected]

The SCLAA NSW Division recently elected a new President, Tamara De Michiel. We would also like to welcome Brendan O’Keefe and Tim Charlton to the committee and look forward to them sharing their expertise and passion with the SCLAA. We look forward to working with the new committee, creating some new and exciting events into 2016 and beyond. We have a site visit coming up this month at Blackwoods in Greystanes on the 17th November, following our ASCL Awards Gala evening on the 4th. Members and families, please don’t forget the Family Fun Day on the 8th November at Luna Park. Would love to see you all there, letting down your hair having a laugh with the family. The Emporium Melbourne and the Bestrane Group hosted a networking lunch for women in Supply Chain. The event attracted 32 women with leading Supply Chain management roles and included a

site tour of the Emporium’s innovative dock management system which was awarded the 2015 SMART Innovation Award for its ‘MobileDOCK’ Dock Management system.

The Emporium Melbourne is a 48,000 square metre retail asset located in one of the most congested parts of the CBD on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets in Melbourne, Australia. The site has some unique logistics challenges; it can only be accessed via a narrow laneway and its footprint ruled out traditional inclined ramps into loading locks.

The theme of the event was Excellence. Elegance. Ease. The guest speaker, Laura Anderson, Chairman Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival described her remarkable career and her belief that Supply Chain is an exceptional career choice for women (and men). Laura emphasised that Australia’s ability to trade is critical to our country’s future prosperity, which is underpinned by Supply Chain excellence.

The event attracted 32 women in leading Supply Chain management roles representing Sinochem Australia, Queen Victoria Market, PFD Food Services, Ctrack ANZ, Xtreme Freight, The Good Foundation, The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, NBN, Bestrane, ARRB Group, Victoria University, Secon Freight Logistics, Myer, Safe Sense, Treasury Wines Estates, Lion, VicRoads, Australia Post, Australia Post, Woolworths, Australia Post and Kings Transport.

Post lunch, the site tour commenced led by Arron Renehan, Operations Manager at Emporium, Shannon Donaghey, Dock Master at Emporium, and David Sanders, Group Managing Director at Bestrane.

Adorned in pink safety vests, the group descended to Emporium’s famous loading docks via the largest lifts in the Southern Hemisphere. The lifts replaced long ramps; enabling the site to add an additional 7000 m2 of retail floor space.

Tina Sheldon from the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources commented “The loading dock is quite futuristic really and at the same time the fellow who manages it is so empathetic and down to earth. As well as being very impressive in scale and sophistication, I would even go so far as to call it glamorous!”

Emporium partnered with Bestrane to automatically schedule the use of the two hydraulic truck lifts using a unique web based appointment solution called MobileDOCK. The 2015 SMART award is the culmination of the Emporium/Bestrane partnership and an example of what can be achieved when vision, hard work and innovative technology combine.

This solution has driven many benefits for Emporium including:• Adding an extra 7000m2 of retail floor space that would

otherwise have been needed for long access ramps.• Drivers know exactly when to arrive at the building to

receive direct access to a specific bay eliminating the search for loading zones.

• Queuing times have been eliminated which also has dramatically reduced truck idle time at Street Level.

Results:• Live since August 2014.• Over 90% of appointment bookings made and approved

automatically via the web with NO INTERACTION required from Dock Management at Emporium.

• Congestion has been all but eliminated from the site.• Unauthorised vehicles being identified before entry to

the Emporium site.• Increased site security and visibility of who is onsite for

what periods of time.• Ability for all Supply Chain parties to manage and record

their Chain of Responsibility obligations.

MobileDOCK is a collaborative, web based on-demand solution that enables carriers, suppliers and distribution centers (DCs) to schedule their commercials inbound and outbound appointments to specific docks at specific facilities.
