Regional Health Authorities (RHA) across the province provide several regional therapy services to assist children including speech language pathology, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Additionally, specialized therapy services may be available in larger RHAs or tertiary centres to support regional therapy services in diagnosis, assessment and intervention planning, to meet the needs of children.Building on the Children’s Therapy

Services Service Delivery Model, the maps and descriptions provide caregivers and service providers a guide to the therapy services available for children in each RHA and information on how and where to access the services.

Focusing on family centred care in local service areas, it is recommended that children and their caregivers access regional children’s therapy services prior to seeking specialized programs. Regional therapy providers may be available to help determine and facilitate referral to specialized services and assist in the integration of supports, services and intervention planning on an ongoing basis.

Follow up treatment and management services are provided by the regional Speech Language Pathologist in consultation with the specialized service provider(s).

Inpatient physical therapy services are provided to children while in hospital with a referral from the attending physician. Outpatient physical therapy services are provided to children from birth to 18 years of age through the therapy services department of the health region.

No referral is required to access outpatient services. Caregivers may contact 306-778-9449 for an appointment.

Early Childhood Developmental Team:

Provides specialized team assessments and treatment in speech language pathology and physical therapy, childhood psychology, Autism Spectrum Disorders team, and dietician.

The Early Childhood Development Team has an open referral and caregivers may contact 306-778-9449 for an appointment.

Program Descriptions and Access to Rehabilitation Therapy Services for Children in Five Hills Health Region:


Regional outpatient speech language pathology (SLP) services are provided to children from birth to school entry through the Public Health Services office.

Caregivers may request these services by contacting 306-691-1500. A doctor’s referral is not required to access services.

Acute health episode speech language pathology services are not provided, however referrals are accepted from inpatient services for outpatient follow up.

Specialized speech language pathology services such as feeding and swallowing, and video fluoroscopy are referred to Tertiary Clinics and/or Assessments. Follow up treatment and management services are provided by the specialized service provider(s).

KidsFirst: Families involved with the KidsFirst program access preschool SLP services directly through KidsFirst.

Outpatient physical therapy services for developmental impairments are provided to children from birth to school entry through the Five Hills Health Region Paediatric Therapy Services team. School-aged children are seen on a limited basis when there has been an acute medical change which requires a therapy review or a block of treatment. No referral is required to access outpatient services. Caregivers may contact 306-694-0201 for an appointment for all services.

A generalized assessment and treatment service in physical therapy is provided to all children through Community Therapy Services. Typically musculoskeletal and orthopaedic services are provided.

Regional speech language pathology services are provided to:• Children residing in the city of

Saskatoon from birth to school entry through Speech Language Pathology, Royal University Hospital. Caregivers may request these services by contacting the department at 306-655-2434. A physician referral is not required.

• Children residing in the rural area of Saskatoon Health Region from birth to school entry through Speech Language Pathology, Public Health Services. Caregivers may request these services by contacting the department at 306-655-4700. A physician referral is not required.

• Children from birth to school entry with an associated mental health and/or behavioural problem through Child and Youth Services. Caregivers can request these services by contacting SHR Child and Youth Services at 306-655-5721. A physician referral is not required.

• Children admitted to Royal University Hospital from birth to 12 years of age, with feeding and swallowing concerns or complex communication issues. Referral from one of the inter-professional hospital team is required.

Specialized Speech Language Pathology:

Specialized speech language pathology services offered are:• Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at

306-655-2922 and the Gastrostomy Tube Clinic at 306-655-2208 located at Royal University Hospital.

• Videofluoroscopy at Royal University Hospital. These services may be requested by contacting 306-655-2434.

• Specialized children’s speech language pathology at the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program (ABCDP). Referrals are accepted from family or guardians, physicians or other health care providers for children who display or are at risk for significant developmental, cognitive and/or

physical challenges. All referrals are assessed through an intake process to determine if the child meets the ABCDP mandate. Caregivers may request these services by contacting ABCDP intake at 306-655-1070.

• Specialized children’s team assessments involving the paediatrician at the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program (ABCDP). A team assessment requires a physician referral. These services may be requested by contacting ABCDP intake at 306-655-1070.

Physical Therapy:

Regional physical therapy services are provided to:• Children birth to 18 years of age with

orthopaedic, plastics and rheumatology concerns or deficits in movement and function as a result of illness or injury that are not associated with a developmental delay through Royal University Hospital outpatient services. Services may be requested by contacting 306-655-2431.

• Children birth to 18 years of age with orthopaedic, plastics and rheumatology concerns or deficits in movement and function as a result of illness or injury that are not associated with a developmental delay through Rural Community Therapy Services at 306-232-8234 and Community Services at 306-655-3400.

• Children admitted to Royal University Hospital from birth to 12 years of age. Referral from one of the inter-professional hospital team is required.

Specialized Physical Therapy:

Specialized physical therapy services offered are:• For children with bleeding disorders

through the Bleeding Disorders Program at Royal University Hospital. The program can be contacted at 306-655-6504. Referral by a haematologist is required.

• Specialized children’s physical therapy at the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program (ABCDP). Referrals are accepted from family or guardians, physicians or other health care providers for children who display or are at risk for significant developmental, cognitive and/or physical challenges. All referrals are assessed through an intake process to determine if the child meets the ABCDP mandate. Caregivers may request these services by contacting ABCDP intake at 306-655-1070.

• Specialized children’s team assessments involving the paediatrician at the Alvin

Specialized services within Saskatoon Health Region are primarily provided at two locations: the Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program (ABCDP) and Royal Univeristy Hospital (RUH).

The Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program* (ABCDP) provides specialized children’s therapy services in speech language pathology, physical therapy,

and occupational therapy as well as interdisciplinary team assessment, diagnosis and consultation. These children display or are at risk for significant development, cognitive and/or physical challenges. All referrals are assessed through an intake process to decide if the child meets ABCDP mandate. Team assessments involving the pediatrician at ABCDP require physician referral. Therapy

services are open to referrals from family or guardians, physicians or other health care providers.

• Caregivers may request these services by contacting 306-842-8684 in Weyburn and 306-637-3646 in Estevan. A doctor’s referral is not required to access services.

• Acute health episode speech language pathology services are not provided, however referrals are accepted from inpatient services for outpatient follow up.

• Specialized speech language pathology services such as feeding and swallowing, and video fluoroscopy are referred to Tertiary Clinics and/or Assessments. Follow up treatment and management services are provided by the regional Speech Language Pathologist in consultation with the specialized service provider(s).
