Dressed to kill

The flagship Galaxy S series from Samsung’s stable was in a dire need of change in the design

philosophy, and the brand has delivered that with the S6 and S6 edge

While the Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy A series set a precursor to the new design ethics, it’s

the Galaxy S6 duo that has taken things to the next level

The use of metal frame and glass back lends the S6 edge a premium look

It’s a unibody device with a slim waist measuring 7mm and it’s quite lightweight too, tipping the

scales at 132g

Front is the new back

The calling card of the phone is its cascading display on both sides

The edge screen, as it’s called, offers a variety of features

Thanks to the curves at the front, you’ll find it more natural to hold it with the back facing out,

since the phone has a flat rear

Other design elements of the smartphone remain the same as previous Samsung offerings,

including the placement of fingerprint sensor below the home button and the heart rate

monitor at the back

The device seems extremely fragile due to a slippery back

Screen time with an edge (or two)

Thanks to its proprietary Super AMOLED technology, the displays on Samsung’s

smartphones have always been known for their stunning visuals

The Galaxy S6 edge doesn’t change that either with its 5.1-inches display panel

featuring dual-curved edges, bearing four times HD resolution at 2,560 x 1,440 pixels

It’s an incredibly sharp display, along with accurate viewing angles. You can also read it

easily under direct sunlight

The device also promises a bit of drop resistance thanks to the layer of Gorilla Glass 4

The stylish, but barely useful edges

The Galaxy S6 edge is the

world’s first device to sport a

dual-edge display

However, unlike the

prominent edge on the right

side of the Galaxy Note

Edge, the edges are a part of

the display itself

There are numerous features

such as Edge lighting,

Information stream and night

clock for the edge, though

they don’t seem to be

extremely beneficial

Lollipop and TouchWiz…

The Samsung Galaxy S6

edge ships with Android’s

latest iteration, i.e. v5.0

Lollipop

Like previous offerings from

the brand, it’s topped by the

custom TouchWiz layer

However, the amount of

customisations have been

toned down and the UI gels

well with the Material Design

language

By default, you get two

homescreens along with a

dedicated homescreen that

shows a visual feed of news

one-stop glance at the

phone’s battery, storage

RAM and security, along with

the option of one-click

The snappers that score high on specs and features…

The Apple iPhone series remains

the undisputable king of smartphone

cameras, thanks to their simplistic

interface and quick shooting

capabilities

The Galaxy S6 edge might change

the status quo, with its powerful

16MP sensor at the back,

supplemented by an LED flash

There’s also a 5MP camera at the

front

The camera app can be accessed

quickly in 0.07 seconds by pressing

the home button twice

The app offers a ton of modes and

options to enhance the imaging

… to raise the bar for smartphone cameras

The shots taken with the

smartphone are lovely with ample

detail and colour fidelity

The impression remains the same

over a variety of situations, right

from landscape shots to macro

photos and even low-light images

The secondary camera also offers

good quality for capturing selfies

or making video calls

Being a flagship-grade device, the

Galaxy S6 edge can record videos

in 4K resolution. It can also shoot

slow-mo videos at 60fps

Exynos snaps the dragon out with its sheer power

Unlike previous models in the series which were powered by Snapdragon SoCs,

providing muscle to the S6 edge is the Exynos 7420 CPU, which is a combination

of 2.1GHz quad-core + 1.5Ghz quad-core clusters

The processor is combined with Mali T760 GPU and generous 3GB of LPDDR4

RAM

Offers flawless performance even when multiple apps were opened or while

playing graphically-intensive titles.

But suffers from heating issues, which are aggravated because of the glass back

Ample storage, but no option of expansion

Handling your storage needs is a

32GB eMMC memory, which

offers around 25GB for your

personal use

Sadly, the phone misses out on

expansion slot, so you can’t

extend it further

You can purchase the device in

64 / 128 GB editions too

Thanks to the support for USB

On-the-Go capabilities, the

Galaxy S6 edge can readily

The battery life is a killjoy

While the Samsung Galaxy S6

edge has improved in all the

aspects from its predecessor,

the battery remains an exception

The Galaxy S6 edge draws

power from a 2,600mAh unit

The embedded battery can help

the Galaxy S6 edge last an

entire day with moderate usage,

but not if you push the use

Thankfully, the phone comes

with fast charging capability,

allowing it to charge extremely

quickly and you can also use

options like ultra power saving

mode

Pricing & verdict

Price:~ Rs 57,000

“With the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge, Samsung has successfully pressed the reboot button for its flagship franchise. The devices offer top-notch displays, power-packed internals, superb snappers, and of course a stunning design. It surely seems a revolutionary upgrade than its predecessor, though the curved screen on the S6 edge seems more of a novelty factor, than serving any practical purpose. ”
